Traktor kontrol x1 and audio 2 dj
had no idea what i was doing, i fell right into the trap of NI advertisments, checking tutorial vids about the x1 on their website and believeing "yeah i wanna do that"
"mixed" my first 6 months without any kind of mixer, no eqing, just the crossfader using my macbooks trackpad.
i had no idea really, but it was fun and since then i've stepped up my game quite a bit, and the x1 (now 2 of them) are still my all time favorite midi controllers (tested out quite a few)

2 x Stanton T.52's & Stanton M.202. The cheapest Direct drive combo I could afford. Really made me appreciate good gear, though I still appreciate that setup for helping me grasp the fundamentals.

1983, a pair of 1200s and a cheap Radio Shack mixer.

1995: Soundlab DLP3's and a soundlab mixer - the one with the big channel cut buttons either side of the crossfader.

Then 1210s in 1996. Sold then in 2008 to a mate. They are still going strong and I've since bought a pair of much newer 1200 mk5s.

Very first setup I played a party with, probably 1984?, was a cheap very light plastic belt drive turntable (I believe it was a Sony), a cheap-ass Radio Shack mixer, and a Pioneer. Pioneer cassette deck, that is! Don't remember what headphones other than I had some, and I didn't know shit about matching beats, I just alternated songs on tape and vinyl throughout the party. Good times!!

A pair of Gemini belt-drives and some crappy 2 ch Gemini mixer

My very first setup was about 15 years ago, I was DJing with some cheap-ass Gemini tables and a mixer. Then I took a break from DJing and focused on production. About two years ago, I got back into it with an S4, but then recently downsized to an S2 - the opposite of what most people do!

Around '99 I got a cheap two channel mixer at Best Buy and two cheap soundcards for my desktop. There was DJ plug-in for WinAmp that allowed you to control the pitch and set a cue point. So with two copies of WinAmp up, one assigned to each sound card, you could mix. Latency was pretty bad but I was able to work around it. It taught me a lot and really makes me appreciate how far things have come.

A pair of belt drive decks by Limit and a nasty, nasty 2 channel mixer that had a dodgy cross fader. Sound out to my amp and I recorded sets into an ancient tape deck (Which I've still got.)

The limits were horrible, but as I've said before, if you can mix on belt drives you can mix on anything. My mate still uses on of them in his house. Wonder what happened to the other one? Probably returned to hell when it couldn't find anymore beginners to annoy.

Thread makes me feel super blessed with my first setup. Mixtrack non-pro with my cheap Realtek soundcard splitting the outs on a pirated VDJ copy.

You little lucky bastards.

I practiced beatmatching vinyl (For WEEKS) with one of these (NO PITCH CONTROL) : $T2eC16hHJHUFFfRN+OMoBRYDV8Jjfg~~60_35.JPG

And one of these hooked up to an old Technics receiver: technics_sl-d202_turntable.jpg

Had to be around 1989.

The I got headphones and a realistic mixer. I bagged groceries and waited tables till one day in 1992 I bought a brand new Technics 1200 from a South American export warehouse (shhhhh) for $350. The smell of the platter and the brand new electronics was intoxicating. I'm a little embarrassed to admit it's still one of the happiest days I can remember.

Bought a Numark DM 1600x and a pair of Technics 1210's all brand new. 15 years later, I still have those decks, though I've gone through several mixers since.

Got my first bit of kit less than a year ago now. All hand me downs. a Numark axis 2, an Axis 8 and a denon DX120 mixer. I was having lots of fun with that old ass gear until I tried to update the software on it. They completely waked out and stopped working. So I was forced to upgrade...

for djing:
An old pentium3 computer with a pirated version of vdj.
Much like jester's keyboard, only dirtier and without the labels/writings on the keys

Then i progressed to my ipod touch running some first-gen djing app (read, no pitch shift or load from library)

For production: My oldman's p4 setup with cubase VST installed, a cheap headset for listening and recording voice samples, and a 240 year old midi keyboard with half of the keys broken to 4€ midi-usb converter

Cool Edit Pro (pirated, I'm sorry)

Rebirth Demo

I'd use the dictionary as a mic stand and clip the mic to it. I'd then try my best to centre my "mic" between the built in speakers of my keyboard and record little loops (sans-quantize) into Cool edit.

Didn't know much about multi-track so If I messed up I'd have to start over again with everything.

Sometimes I'd make little loops on Rebirth, and because it was a demo, try and record it through the mic into Cool Edit.

Sounds, incredibly crude but man, my friends and I had some great fun making tracks like this. Sometimes I'd even clip the mic onto my acoustic guitar and try to record like that.
Mad fucking props.

Korg Nanokontrol and a bootleg version of Traktor. I had all four pages of controls mapped, plus shift functions. Not a real durable piece of gear , but I knew my way around it and rocked a few parties before I managed an upgrade to the VCI-100!

Used CDJ-200s from a friend and some very old and crappy mixer from the closet of my high school's broadcast journalism department.

Looking back, I was really lucky to have Pio CDJs to learn on!

Kam Made2Fade mixers Same here, along side a pair of Soundlab DLP1's (belt drive) was my first set of kit. After a few months decided I was hooked on DJing so saved up and bought a 1210 Mk2, then eventually a couple of years later used part of my student loan to buy a 2nd after flogging the DLP1's on. Still got both 1210s today and working like a charm

Second set up was Citronic PD1 tt's, with a chrome Numark Mixer, good learning tools.

Had a break for a few years and dabbled with a mixtrack pro/NI S2, but now have Traktor Scratch Pro, Audio 6, NI X1, Macbook Pro, Pioneer HDJ 500w for my gigs and x2 Gemini PT 2000, Gemini PS4 Mixer and x2 Gemini CDJ 250's in my man cave :-)
