Rokit 8" vs 10"
Posted on: 19.12.2011 by Rosina Steinkuehler
Hi All!

For my xmas present this year I am looking at a pair of rokit 8" or 10" speakers.

Does anyone have any experience with both of these speakers?

Currently I have a pair of Alesis 10" Studio Monitors that I absolutely love but will be using these speakers in a alternate location.

So is it worth the extra money to upgrade from 8" rokit's to 10" (3-way)?

Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions!

I own a pair of the KRK 10-3s. I would have to say that they are NOT worth the extra money compared to the 8s. My friend owns a pair that i have listened to many times. We both believe the 8s have just as much low end AND punch a bit more. The 10-3s are HUGE and heavy so forget using them for near fields unless you have a large sturdy table.

Question for anyone that comes across this thread. I'm trying to get a pair of Rokits. On Craigslist, some guy is selling a pair of Rokit "CL" 6's. Anyone know if there's a difference between the CL edition?

I have rokit 8s and don't have a sub. I wish I did for big parties. But Now I have some Mackie SRM 350 PA speakers and those are more then enough for a big party.

I have the RP-8s with the SW10 sub and I love it!

would go 2 smaller speakers + sub anyday over a floorstander/fullrange.
A few months ago i invested in a quality sub to my hifi/dj speakers and moreover a deeper bass with more control&punch my other speakers or "monitors" produce a less restrained midrange and even better highs.

Definately go for sub, but don't get a fat one with "slow" element, then you will just get booms and no punch!
from what I learned the crossovers for two way speakers can be alot better than if u have a 3 or 4 way speaker in about the same money. Imo you get more for the money if you want good sq with smaller speakers (not talking about computor sattelites).

You know what - I am completely wrong. These Rokit 8's sound much better mid and high's than my older Alesis Studio Monitor Twos.

After running each through my old test course which is basically old hip hop and newage I can say that these Rokit 8's are unreal!

I have rokit 8s and def love them. I need to add my 10s cause its not enough bass for sure.

I actually use some computer speakers as monitors with the sub to get some bass going. Its actually not bad. Its definitely better then no sub at all.

Speakers somehow last me a long time - for example my Alesis Studio Monitor Two's still sound better than the Rokit's. Hard to imagine but it's true.

With that said I'll spend the extra money for the 12 if it really sounds good. In my experience 10"'s where much tighter the last time I bought speakers

So if it's worth the cash I am game.

Anyone out there heard the 12s?

I ended up picking up the 8" Rokit's. Wow do they sound awesome!

For now they are running Parallel to my 12" Cerwin Vega's until the sub arrives.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

I bought both of my 10s subs on craigslist, I believe I paid $150 for the first one a couple years ago and $200 for the second one this weekend.

You can find one for $300 shipped online I'm sure

Yeah they are equally as expensive here - double the price of the 8's.

Yeah it's a pretty sweet studio sub for the money and has great inputs and outputs/ a good built in crossover. On my studio setup I run balanced 1/4" TRS from a Komplete Audio 6 to the sub then XLRs from the sub to each Rokkit 8. Then on my DJ setup I just use all XLRs.

They make some bigger fancier 12" subs but I haven't heard them and didn't have that kind of money. The 10" is more than enough for me.

Heard the 8" Rokits once, but also heard lots of monitor speakers which sounded way better than those. Bought myself a pair of M-Audio CX8s, beautiful sound and much better quality than the Rokits imo.

And about the subs: I don't really miss it. The CX8s can reach quite low frequencies, I only tend to miss sub bass at some drum&bass and industrial hardcore tracks, but for house it's perfect already.

From what I have read and heard from many reputable reviews is that the KRK 6s plus a 10 inch KRK sub produces the most realistic sound.

I'm sure the 8's are fine but with a 10" sub there is no real reason to get an 8" monitor.

So basically the ideal setup is krk 10" sub and 6" monitors....but if you have money to blow then got with the JBL 4326p monitors with JBL 4310sp sub...its what i did and I couldn't imagine a better setup.

I also got my speaker setup for right around $600 which is about $1400 below retail :P

I have the Rokit 6"s and am quite happy with the bass out of them. Although I am eying the 10s sub for a bit more "WROOMPF".

But I'm wondering if I do this will it mean I don't need a sub anymore? I assume the 8" sub will still sound bassier because a) it's on the floor and b) the box design means it puts out more bass than a combined 8" monitor would.

thoughts?
Yes you will still want the sub with it. Even if it's the same size as the woofer it still probably has a better frequency response and speakers on full range never sound as good as having dedicated subs. Just like how there is a huge difference between a 12" top and a 12" top with a 12" subwoofer (look at the QSC Ksub that has 12" drivers).

Well in my case I am used to my 10" Alesis studio monitor two's (http://www.alesis.com/monitor2) that sound absolutely fantastic. I figured the 10" rokits would sound at least comparable.

Agreed 100%.
That's part of the reason I can't fathom using anything but home stereo component speakers for DJing. They crank a LOT louder than any studio monitors I've heard, and tend to color the sound a little depending on what kind of amp/receiver is used. I've always gotten more bang (and boom) for my buck with that stuff.

Granted, if space is a concern, component stereo stuff is probably not the best idea.

Well definitely go for the 10s subwoofer but I wouldn't get the 10" RP10-3s.

I would just get the RP8s, the RP10-3s didn't really seem worth it to me for the price and their sheer size but go and test them out.

What brands did you like 10" wise that you have heard at GuitarCenter?
I wasn't really looking at 10" monitors I was just curious and was very underwhelmed by the RP10-3s for what they are.

Always add a sub, the KRK subs aren't big and the sound quality difference is huge. I just picked up my second KRK 10s sub (I got both of them for $200 on craigslist) so I have one for DJing and one for my studio since I hate using monitors without them.

It doesn't matter if you have 15" woofers, it is still going to sound weak and empty on full range compared to smaller speakers with a subwoofer. No subwoofer means no sub bass.

I really don't understand how people are ok without using a subwoofer for DJing and dance music. It just sounds really weak to me and I would rather DJ with computer speakers that have a subwoofer than most smaller affordable monitors without one.
