What AudioInterface do you use?
Posted on: 31.03.2008 by Khaled Daly
Hey out there!

The audio interface, as the connector between the Laptop and Soundsystem, is beside Controller and DjSoftware the most important thing for the bitjockeys. There are so many different options, but which one is best? What are the most popular Soundcards? what Experiences do you have?

I believe these questions are not only very interesting for me, but for all the people who are interested in digital music or who are planning to buy a new Soundcard in the near future - like me

so...
what soundcards do you use? what pros and cons do you have noticed? would u recommend it to your friends?

cheers

Ok Only USB Type....
1.Audio 2 DJ ---- Work Best both Mac&PC <-----With Native NI driver
2.Audio 4 DJ ---- Work Best both Mac&PC <-----With Native NI driver
3.BEHRINGER UCA200 ---- Only 1in&1Out But It can run Traktor in 5.5 ms with no pop crack.....<---Native Driver Work great..in windows...never plugged in mac.(but right now I don't use it anymore...but still keep it)
4.Novation Nio2/4 ----- All in One and I recommended if U use WindowsOS and usb 1.1 is fast enough .... but it's look a little bit Ugly LoL (but right now I don't use it anymore...but still keep it...)
5.X-Fi 5.1 USB <--- It's have a lot of good thing ...than it price.......but not 4 beginner...(this is only one from X-fi that not use x-fi chip but use cirrus logic converter x 2)
6.USB I/O from Mackie PROfx12 <----Do not expect any kind of Live performance ...It's Usb design to record MainMix and yes Built-in soundcard seem to be better (But It's have a very loud volume output LoL)

An audio interface is used to transmit the audio from your computer, to a sound system/amplifier, preferably at high quality.

I'm not trying to be a smart-ass here man. Just trying to help you get sorted out, since i can tell by your other post that this is new to you.

Check out this wikipedia article for a little more info, on audio interface's...

And keep asking questions man, this was new to all of us at one point.
I would suggest reading the FAQ/Recommended Reading...

Ow, that stanton scratch amp is one bulky piece of gear , and effin sturdy.
I chose Firebox over it just because of the size and stanton's sketchiness about future updates and non-openness.

Bought a small Echo Audiofire2 (second hand) last summer. It's built like a tank and I love the sound.
Works like a charm anytime I perform live (once a week, at least)

I was having a mix last week on my old Vestax and i pulled the Treble Knob half off.
It made a squeal that was so loud my ears were ringing. So i swapped channels and though it would be cool but anytime my finger touches the broken Knob the squeal hits me.
Basically , its been time for a new mixer for ages so this was the kicker.
Ive been looking for a Traktor Certified mixer and was hoping that the Fabled Vestax 06PRO would finally appear after its first showing at Namm last year.

Doesnt look like the Vestax is forthcoming (which means it will probably appear soon doh) so i got interested in the Zero 4 cus the Mackie is discontinued and i have heard horror storys about them and the Eclers are WAY to expensive.

After a lot of advice from TeLLy over at the NI community i decided that id go with the Zero 4.

On first impressions (and that where im still at) its great.
Build quality is good all around the mixer. The Knobs are a little small and slightly loose. Its certainly not a mixer to get carried away on and hammer at like a DJM.

The layout seems really good and once im into the Midi capabilities which means using the Korg Editor i believe this is gonna be a winner.

ill keep you up to speed with my progress.

It lights up like a Xmas Tree as well !!!

Amazingly enough Hard To Find Records is the cheapest stockist (usually the most expensive). http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR223442

Im reserving judgement up to now as i havent had it in the club yet.
But on my home system (which is average quality) the quality is identical.

The audio setup was unbelievably easy . Exactly the same setup for the Zero 4 as for the Audio 8 but without any USB streaming problems as its FireWire and no need for the Multicores.

I need to get it in the club and test out all the EQ settings cus its got various presets and combinations.

Im expecting a lot from this mixer. If NI approve it i want it to be as good as the Audio 8.

Will do a a review when im done.

My sound card is in my sig, and i've had no problems whatsoever with any of novation's products. They've been tested in a live setting, and I've had no problems running a 4-5 hour set. I love the nio, headphone cueing is easy and simple, and sound quality is superb. In response to the first post, I personally believe sound card choice is far more important than controllers or even software. Sound quality is number one priority when your supposed to be entertaining people with your music. All the fancy controllers in the world can't make up for a crappy connection.

Not that the price is anything I'm really looking forward to paying, but the NI Audio 8 sounds like the best card for me right now. I have 2 PDX-2000s that I haven't used in a while because I just bought traktor pro (well sort of just bought), and haven't had the interface to use the turntables with. I'll also probably have to upgrade to Scratch Pro for them. Maybe just use the VCI when I play out, and in the "studio" I can use the pdx-2000s.

Have you used it? I owned it for a week and it was the worst mixer ever. Felt horrible (like an $80 Numark mixer), paint started chipping and smudging in a week, the firewire interface didn't work when I bought it (they released drivers for vista a month after I sold it). Everything felt flimsy and the build qualiy was questionable- it was a huge pile of trash and I believe it has been discontinued for a while now.

Celebrated a year of Xone 4D ownership this week - really beautiful sound. Warm, clear and big. Can't compare to other cards, sorry but am loving the one that A&H have included with this unit.

The Otus' Burr-Brown is not too shabby. Doesn't have the punch of a NI Audio 8 or 4, but its fidelity and resolution is up there with Protools gear.

Truth be told, I'd use an Otus or XP-10 as a standalone audio interface without complaint in a pinch.

The best sound card I've ever had was the RME 400.

It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Super stable, amazing sound quality (and I'm really picky with sound cards), portable... those germans know their business. This little beast is comparable to the bigger and more expensive apogee interfaces.

Check on gearslutz community s for comparisons and recommendations on it.

Maybe I'm late on this.

I had the firebox for about 2 years. I used it on a windows machine a few years back.

Really liked the sound quality for the price, and never let me down.

The only thing I didn't really like was that it gets really hot. It's really a firebox.

I use VDJ. I believe its possible that i use the inputs on the bcd to route the timecode signal into vdj and than use the Audio2 to output the audio-signal to amp and headphone. Right now i use the build in soundcard of the bcd to route timecode in and audio/music out through headphone and master out of the bcd. I believe routing the music out of the audio2 would defenitly sound better than now routing it through the BCD. Only using the bcd as a controller is too less for me as i need my vinyl for scratches and also to play real vinyl ,its just that i cant afford a audio4, non the less a new controller with audio2.

I will do some research on this. thanks anyways
