Known affectionately as the Godfather of Progressive House and as one of the original Aahz Djs, Dave Cannalte has long been credited with formulating the once vibrant Orlando underground dance scene. His love of uplifting dance music has kept him busy entertaining crowds in America as well as Europe for well over a decade.
Arriving in Florida in 1987, he took over Orlandos popular alternative music night called SPIT. A year and half later, he left to pursue a prestigious position as head music programmer for Walt Disney Worlds Pleasure Island. It was at this time that he met relative newcomer Kimball Collins, who took over residency duties for Dave at SPIT. Kimball had also just started up at Orlandos infamous Beacham Theater and quickly reciprocated by asking Dave to be his co-resident. Their Saturday nights (known as Aahz) are legendary, and many of todays most accomplished Florida DJs and producers were regulars, including Chris Fortier, Andy Hughes, and Sean Cusick.
Dave and Kimball, along with promoter Stace Bass, were the first to bring international acts to Orlando. Sasha, Dave Seaman, John Digweed, and Cosmic Baby all had their Florida debut at Aahz.
Dave continued to dj at Pleasure Islands cutting edge video club Cage and eventually took over residency at Mannequins, PIs flagship club. It was here he met and encouraged a young Jimmy Van M to pursue his dreams of djing and producing music. When Aahz closed in 1992, he started travelling to cities such as Charlotte, Atlanta, San Francisco and New York City. During this time he established himself as one of Americas premier progressive DJs. In 1996, Dave made his European debut, playing in Germany, England, and Scotland. During the next few years his U.S. travels increased, and he was regularily on bills with such heavyweights as Sasha, Digweed, Paul Van Dyk and Josh Wink. He also played in countries such as Canada and Central America.
In late 1996, he took on programming duties for the US based promotion company, Promo Only, helping create their successful Import CD series. Dave left Disney World in late 2000 to work at Promo Only on a full-time basis, focusing on programming, and their newly acquired DVD series.
While not a regular name on the production side of things, Dave has several local label credits to his name, and in 1996 he co-wrote and co-produced Sam Mollisons single Always On My Mind". The following year, he took on remix for Underground Records. Original studio productions and a mixed compilation are all due from Dave sometime in late 2001. Dave currently holds residencies in three Orlando clubs, and travels regularily across the country, and to Mexico and Canada.
