Traktor for Android?
Posted on: 20.05.2012 by Flo Befus
Hi, does anybody know if there is coming Traktor for Android devices? I really would like to use my tablet instead of buying a laptop. Technically its no Problem to run Traktor on Android i believe. But with the midi controller and the external soundcard.. i dont know.

not quite true as traktor runs fine on linux when run under wine, tho i doubt any tablet would have enough grunt. since android is linux based i should be more pro android - but iOS does seem the way to go if you are serious about using a tablet for music/dj'ing. there's just *sooo* many great (and stupidly cheap) iOS apps out there now.

there are libraries for java that make it real easy I built a test app with just one button seding 5 midi signal's and that wasnt a problem

As far as real Audio goes I cant comment or using midi for anything more than a midi controller

that digitaldjtips article was weak. the main reason why developers of professional audio apps prefer ios so strongly over android is because ios has all the necessary APIs while android lacks those. (as i wrote above, no low-latency audio and no out-of-the-box MIDI support on android.) all other reasons are a distant second to that.

Android is considered slow for certain applications because android programs are in java. This is a conscious decision on googles part because it makes porting to different ISA's easy. However there are so many optimisations available now and the speed of some of the android SOC's makes this a moot compared to ipad, which dedicates way more power to its GPU than CPU capabilities.

What apple has going for it is the core audio architecture which as we all know is very good and a major drawcard for why so many audio applications are made for OS X.

However in terms of traktor appearing on a tablet. As another poster has pointed out windows 8 is probably going to be it. Those X86 tablets running windows 8 will be capable of running traktor out of the box. It is only up to NI to release a version available on that stupid app store MS is doing.

Android is easier to develop for in many ways, but so is IOS. Android has beeter ways to make money from ads. People who buy apple stuff generally spend more on apps. Android now has a bigger market share by a mile in phones so you are starting to see android being deved for 1st.

However apple really do dominate in the tablet space. I believe this has alot to do with android 3.0 as every1 knew it was just a stop gap for 4.0 so people didnt make tablet optimised apps for android. Android 4.0 is as good as IOS in my opion on the tablet front, however cuz of those earlier mistakes there isnt alot of apps. lets demo this wit sum sudo

lack of apps = less people buying = lack of dev support

It will take alot to get the tablet market back

I'd love ANY dj app that simply uses the Traktor beatgrids. I spend a lot of time getting these right, and I'm yet to find an android app that does an even remotely close job. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, just want to have a backup DJ app on my phone that I can use (without headphones, hence the importance of beatgrids) to do basic mixing when something's happened to my regular Traktor setup.

One of the biggets pains in the ass is these super powerful little devices can't play host for controllers! They only have the ability to be a hardware client (unlike the aformentioned ipad).

Once the platform it truley opened up, (which I beleive it will be soon) dev's will be in a far better place to work with hardware. Only then will we see the laptop being replaced completely.

This argument is purely academic. You can't run traktor on Linux, let alone iOS or android. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the big 3 releases an iOS version in the next couple of years, but there's been no official word from any of them yet. And if you want a tablet that's likely to be the first to get a true pro grade piece of DJ software, get an iPad.

android is generally not favored by developers as there are many permutations of the operating system and hardware, for this reason iOS is favored as there is only an upgrade every couple of years to both the hardware and the operating system, this means software vendors can sell ther product without a major overhaul for longer periods of time. The point of the story is, if you wan't to use a tablet you should invest in an ipad... the new mixvibes app looks amazing, if you wan't more info on iOS apps check out www.digitaldjtips.com phil loves iOS and has indepth ipad app reviews all the time.
