Posted on: 05.06.2012 by Ardell Lafranchi
I have a good laptop, a mixtrack pro, but as of right now cannot afford my own speakers (planning on saving up to build my own around 500 a piece give or take) are there any quick solutions to djing house parties that you'd suggest... i have looked into renting but id rather not spend money for gigs im drinking at for free and playing for around 50 to 100 dollars. Any ideas?

If you have a good home theater system, you can get away with this, however you need to be conscientious of the fact that you are running maybe 200 watts total, not multiple thousands, and as such they will not be as loud as a full PA setup. If this is all you have, then it's most likely your best bet. Investing wisely is secondary in importance ONLY to improvisation and making do with the resources already at your disposal.

True. AND...that is really true of ANY PA system. The community at Bill's site is also a firehose of information about pro audio. If you can hang on long enough, you can actually learn what the !@#$% you are doing.

Knowing what I know now, I could have gotten a LOT better sound out of my last PA system.....or really any PA system that I happen to encounter.

+1

That is why I quoted $2k for a DIY "basic system" and listed all the parts you mention.

if you can find some powered 10's like the mackie srm350v2 or jbl eong2 and then a nice polk audio home subwoofer like psw505 or psw350 it will work very nice for house parties. I have even used poweered krks's and polk sub before. As long a the room isnt huge.

also with some home stereo type systems there will be a delay in sound coming out of the speakers and will make it very difficult to mix from your headphones to the room. i like soundinmotiondj's suggestion about checkin out the comp speakers from a big box store but those will only work for smaller parties.

craigslist is a great place to find used speakes and if you check it each day you can get some good deals. if your looking to start small just do what you can now and keep building. i started out using a home stereo type system. then moved to two 15" cabs. then added an 18" sub. now ive just started a build on some BFM Tubas. Pro audio can quickly turn into an addiction and make the best of what you have because not all of us can have 10x DR200's and 10x T39's. i cant even imagine what that would sound like lol

If you are willing to go the PC speaker route, go get the bet sounding 2.1 system you can find at a big box retailer. Shop mid day and mid week - the store will be empty enough for you to bring a CD with some of your music. Turn the system up to about "7" and then walk 30-40ft away. Get the system that sounds the best.

Fro $500 per cabinet, the RCF 312A is a good choice.

If you want to build, checkout http://billfitzmaurice.net/. The issue is that even an "entry level" system (e.g. two tops, two subs, amps, effects, PA management, cables, racks, etc) will cost about $2k to put together. The good news is that for that investment, you will get a system that would cost more than $2k to buy. The value of time spent in the woodshop will need to be included....at whatever exchange rate seems right to you. For reference, I have built 20 of these cabinets for my own use.

pro tip ---- if you want to play out on your own rig. Invest some monies into it.. buying cheap will always lose you money in the long run.

I'd advise against building your own as well. There are alot of varibles when building a speaker cabinet. The choice of drivers generally dictates as to what size the the box and ports will need to be. Then you need to factor the material to build the box with, its thickness, internal bracing and last but not least a cross over network. With all the time and effort you put in it would be cheaper and you'll get a better result in buying something. Secondhand is another really good option. Just wait for the right boxes to come up and the right price.

Rent, no other solution. It will also give you a good chance to try before you buy. Oh yea, unless you are really good with a saw, buy don't build.
