UPS just delivered my 13" MBP. Now my question for the Mac usess is how do I transfer Traktor Pro and my music files from my PC laptop?

Yeah…OS X is a great second choice. I still believe that for general use it pales in comparison to Gentoo Linux (if you really know what you're doing), but it's worth not having to reboot to play with music shit.

I used to be really anti-Apple…they were expensive, prettier than useful, and kind of generally just "those weird things graphic designers use" for a long time. I was running Windows, Linux, and BeOs (as a joke) at the time. Then I played with a build of NextSTEP at some point and realized that's what OS X was based on……and helped a friend fix a hardware issue on his Macbook……and I was sold.

I've said it before, I'll say it again…I'd give up using computers for music long before I'd go back to Windows.

Now that this thread is completely derailed, here's a picture of a tiger and a toyger screaming.

Totally agree with the problem being windows and not the laptop.
I spent weeks trying to get some stuff for a live show stable on my desktop, laptop and my gf's laptop. Same version of windows and all had different problems.
I decided to get a macbook and everything worked with absolutely no problems straight out of the box!

(Don't get me wrong I'm not a mac fanboy.. My desktop for production runs windows and I have a linux laptop)

Thanks for the help guys. Got it figured out. TP 2.1.3 installed, music folders imported, without using iTunes I might add. Right now TP 2 is scanning my folders.

Now if all goes well, I'll be up in running in a couple of hours.

Any thing else I should know?

Stop. Stop. STOP. All of you calm yourselves. The OP was asking a simple question about how to transfer files, not for a mac vs. pc debate that we've had on this community ad nauseum/1,000,000 times/beating a dead horse/every cliche in the book. PC users won't be convinced that Macs are better until they've owned/tried one, and Mac users who haven't used a PC have very little idea what the other side of the fence is like. Regardless, MAC VS. PC IS NOT THE TOPIC OF THIS THREAD. If you would like to start a Mac vs. PC thread, do so on your own time, but do not turn this thread and any other thread which mentions macs and PCs in the same paragraph into one.

When it comes to MIDI clock stability (sending and receiving between two different softwares), Mac wins hands down:

Windows: still requires you to install LoopBe1 (or any other) virtual port
Mac: in built virtual port

Even with my top of the line pc specs, the stability of the MIDI clock out and in is just not there. Too much latency. This is why my next laptop will be Mac.

Sorry OP, really didn't want to add to the Mac vs pc thing, but I thought I could at least give a DEFINITIVE reason where macs DO shine even over the most optimized pc. enjoy your new Mac!

7" full 1080P screen(doesnt really matter) and weight isnt an issue nor space with my Laptop stand.
17" is bulky and a bastard to carry, i like my 13.meh my flightcase is heavy as fuck already and i keep it in there
Core i7 2630QM Processor 2.6ghz with 6mb Cache
no comment, its a processor - ...no comment its just a processor? uhhhhh im not even gonna touch this one
12 Gigs of 1333mhz Ram
you talk about your ableton benchpressing abilities, however live only uses 3.2GB of RAM MAX (true but if you want to use anything else with it, the bridge or re-routing through to traktor you may have issues, so 4gb is sufficient
Dual HDD with 160ssd and 750 7200rpm HD
not hard to install on a mac This will cost additional money on top of the over inflated price u already paid
3 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0
we have firewire. thats great, firewire is used about as much as usb 3.0 and since usb 3.0 is newer tech it will be utilzed a lot more and is faster than firewire

Okay put the full specs of ur MBP and lets compare...

Mine:

17" full 1080P screen(doesnt really matter) and weight isnt an issue nor space with my Laptop stand.
Core i7 2630QM Processor 2.6ghz with 6mb Cache
12 Gigs of 1333mhz Ram
Dual HDD with 160ssd and 750 7200rpm HD
3 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0
GTX 560M (not really applicable but hey its a benefit)

I can do all my Graphic Design, Working with Ableton (with almost NO latency) Traktor, and even Setup my projector to do visuals (not VDJing) while i am playing for small events and house parties.

And im pretty sure that this cost probably around the same as a 15" macbookpro if not less.

Disregard my sig...that was my original Laptop before i bought this beast

on my old machine i didn't have itunes set to copy files into it's own library - i believe it's easier to migrate if you *do* let it copy them? all the tutorials i saw anyway were for how to do it when itunes was managing the collection for you which i am doing now (tho didn't mean to - forgot to uncheck the option )

so i just copied the folder i drop my new purchases into - mangled the xml to point to that dir - and it all worked first time...

actually i was being stupid... i didn't use a fat32 anyway, i only have ntfs formatted drives

first thing i did was get that to work - installed "FUSE for OS X" and NTFS support for it so i could read and write to ntfs drives

You don't need a Fat32 formatted drive to just read the files from the old hard drive - only to write.

And easy method to start copying stuff

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 << start here make life easier.

i did a similar thing when migrating my itunes collection and just did a search+replace in the xml file from the old to new locations.

i had to do the same thing the other month but wanted to start from scratch mostly anyway. i just downloaded the traktor pro demo for mac and unlocked it in the service center. mp3's etc i copied across using a fat32 external drive - but now use "scp" to copy most files to/from the mac (u just need to enable the sshd server on the mac). pretty sure u only need the files that mostapha mentioned - may have to relocate them when traktor checks the collection? i did a similar thing when migrating my itunes collection and just did a search+replace in the xml file from the old to new locations.

Cool your jets PC boi.

FAT32 Drive, export your settings from Traktor on the PC, make sure you get NI to deactivate the PC license. Copying your library is a bit more involved if you want to keep your beat grids and cue points, there should be a guide on how to do it though...

There are tons of articles out there on how to do this.

Not to be a dick, but just Google it. I just recently had to do this, although I went from Mac to Mac. I only transferred my iTunes because I wanted to start from scratch with Traktor. I'm not sure how move Traktor, or if its even possible, to do that. The key is having the original iTunes library files in the same location on the new computer.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, I'm on my work computer and do not have access to my bookmarks.

install traktor on the mac? the mac installer should be on the install disc and use external harddrive to copy music across.
