Check this guy out - very limited gear - but making the absolute most of it. 11 years old???

Maximum respect!

It's cool, but I don't really believe it's anything difficult. I mean there are many sub 10 year old piano virtuoso's. And this kind of clip is all over youtube...

Is actually doing something. 9 years old omg?!?

I know! But thanks for noticing, maybe you could tell me girlfriend, she's been doubting my manhood since she caught me in her underwear and pumps.

Seems like you didn't really get my point...

The purpose of my post wasn't 'ripping that 11 year old a new one'. Some of the statements may have been a little rough, but the rest was objective criticism. After all, this was an entry for a competition and if you put yourself out there to be judged, be prepared to be judged. In full acknowledgement of that this kid is doing something not many kids his age do: if that had been my performance I wouldn't have published it, because I would not have considered this to be ready to be put in front of the eyes of the general public. But then again I've always been rather self-critical...

Anyway, the point of my first post was to put things in perspective as some people seemed to be wetting themselves in excitement as if they had seen the new mozart of electronic music.
At least since I read that "OMG he isn't even using sync" comment I couldn't stop believeing that the excitement of some people here might be slightly exaggerated...

I don't have anything against sync buttons (as long as you are able to beatmatch by hand when no such button should be available..), but if we assume here that using sync buttons is bad, there is only one thing that is really worse:

NOT using the sync button when you should have. Same goes for phase meters.

And it's not like he was trying to beatmatch. At 1:30 you can clearly see that, while the track is stopped, he simply moves the pitch fader until (roughly) the right number shows up in the bpm display.
The throw in for the aerodynamic loop is slightly off, and the fact that the tempo is of by more that .1 bpm doesn't make it any better.
The cut to levels suddenly lowers the tempo by more than 3 bpm, as he didn't bother to move the fader to the right number again.

I didn't make it much further than to the track after levels. My ears were almost bleeding by then, because 90% of what that kid is doing are musical train wrecks....

I don't really understand why everybody here is getting so excited about this. I mean, ok, the kid is 11 years old, but that would only be impressive if he was really good!
A-Trak kicked the turntablists elite's asses in the 1997 DMC world final when he was 15, THAT's impressive.

But, as someone said before: that kid is playing a video game (without any further judgement regarding the current state or future of DJing implied in that statement!)

Someone showed him what buttons to press in which order and that's what he's doing.

At least that's what I hope he is doing... because if he wasn't it would mean that would mean that DJing had actually turned into a video game for kids that was only about pressing as many buttons as possible without caring to much about the musical levels (pun intended) of the performance

As for the kid, I wish I got started doing just about anything with that kind of focus when I was 11, hehe... No he's not the death of DJing but I understand why people might not like this; he's totally focused on the screen and it's very much like a video game for him. Sure he's not using sync, but he's got no headphones and he's changing the tempo by sight, not sound. But who cares, he's 11 and just getting started; hopefully he'll be drawn more into the music than the visuals (it's gotta happen; otherwise there are way more interesting video games for him to play than Traktor).

So because a kid picks up a guitar and wants to play it because it's fun means he killed rock 'n roll? He did a very good job even though he obviosly hasn't been at it very long. We'll see in the next few years if he's dedicated, if not he'll stop and that's that. I'm only fourteen and I'm not out here cause I wanna rock a stadium next to skrillex, I'm here because I have a passion for music. It's all about the work you put in, and he seems to be putting in the time.

No need to hate on the kid. He's set wasnt great but he's 11 so who cares he isn't going to steal your job in the club and the more you hate on him the more people will eventually hate on you for bringing a kid down. He isn't being a douche in front of the camera he is just normal doing his thing. Good on him.
