Helping out my son Posted on: 24.08.2012 by Lidia Haraway So my son is really getting into this entire DJing thing. He's been saving up his money and bought himself something called the iDJ3??? We'll I have been doing some searches and couldnt find anything as far as speakers go. He was able to do this on his own so the least I can do is support him and get his speakers. My thing is I dont want to drop to much money into it if he isnt going to stick at it. So does anyone have any recommendations? And please break it down into dummy terms for me, I have no idea about any of this. I'm just a dad trying to help out his 15 year old son. | |

These will sound good for small parties and even better in that GS music room even if it never leaves the house could always be great for home family affairs. Kudos for supporting your son on his DJ path. I started 25 years ago on some used speakers that I simply rebuilt with the small budget I was working w these will definitely get the job done. |
| Celine Surico 25.08.2012 | Samson sells good 2x150W PA systems, good stereo sound. That should work fine for smaller gigs, really small ones of course, with a sub-woofer a little bit bigger ones. They also have a 2x250W system. Best of all, light-weight. Cost below $500, maybe even lower if you get a good deal online. I got my 2x150W system to my garage as a practice PA system for $330. |

| Alla Bluemke 26.08.2012 | can you be my daddy please? Thats awesome. Right now if hes just starting I would just get him some small monitors to play with at home. Maybe like rokit 5s or something. Reason being is that schools should have some of their own gear
to use for their events. As for house parties, kids usually figure out whos dad has the cool speaker system to borrow for a evening
, or they use the home theatre system and bang it out lol. Also when he is playing a house party you can rent out some speakers as well. I would hunt craiglist for some good deals on used gear . I got my speakers for 200 bucks (Pair of rokits) and will look for bigger speakers soon too. I've played small house parties with Rokit 8s no problem. |

You'll also need balanced TRS cables that will probably add close to $16--$80 total depending on length. Stands can wait for a little while, but not to long. |

I started on a Numark Mix track and to be honest I'm glad my parent's didn't go all out and get me something crazy because I believe it's important as a DJ to work up your way in gear as you work your way up in skill and commitment. I don't know too much about speakers but I hear great things about mackie thumps, but I seriously believe you could start on much less. maybe it would be a fun exercise to let him research some speakers on a budget? that way he gets to learn the product market and and additional info he'll pick up from looking into it. And I mainly want to thank you from A teenage Son to a father for the fact that you're supporting your kid in something you probably don't really under stand but can see that he wants to do it more than anything. |
| Ossie Pooley 24.08.2012 | Monitors are all well and good, but if your son wants to DJ with them as opposed to create music, they're not as ideal. They simply won't go as loud as you want to. | Darren Teboe 24.08.2012 | Kudos on the support. Definitely look into either JBL or maybe QSC. If he loses interest in the near future, you want your investment to retain value rather than take a nose dive as soon as the box gets open. Some of the cheaper stuff does that. |

I'm looking at 300 per speaker as I've found usually come per. I want to be as supportive as possible but in the same hand don't want to drop my entire mortage payment on speakers if he's not planning on sticking with it. And thank you all for your help, I'm lost and dumb when it comes to this. |

| Antonetta Wikel 24.08.2012 | First off, Kudos to you for supporting your son in his artistic endeavor. Now, there's a WIDE variety of speakers and you need to limit your choices. If he's just planning on playing at home and small parties for friends then you want to look more towards studio and or nearfield monitors. If he wants something to play bigger events, you got to look at larger speakers. Also, you haven't mentioned your price range which would be very helpful in any suggestions we can give you. |
