Is my identity/brand outdated?
Posted on: 03.09.2012 by Jamila Citino
So I am trying to get things up into the next phase of trying to resurrect my DJ career. I've tweaked out the website to something I am liking at the moment (http://www.pariscreative.com), I am starting to design up some new business cards, I am starting to network to see what I can do.

However my wife told me last evening when I had her critique my business card she noted that she thought my name was too long (too many syllables) and my logo seemed outdated.

I created the logo about 6 years ago as a 2nd gen logo for my design company. Yep that name was Paris Creative. And my thought that I was going for the name at the time circa 2001 is that I could transpose the company name to any creative endeavor I when through. When I decided that I web design was no longer profitable, I retired that, some time passed, and then I really started to get the itch to get back into DJing (which really never went away).

So that takes me to this point. Is my name too "non-DJ"? Is my logo outdated?

So after some feedback from this site, one of the other bid DJ sites, and my tech site, I've decided to:

a) Stick with the name. While it was branded more on the design side, I believe that it could be re-branded effectively.
b) Rework the site to push all the aspects of what I plan to provide.
c) Change the logo

So with some of that feedback I've come up with this simple logo:

I really like your name, believe it sticks in the head quite well - if i downloaded a bootleg of yours for example i would definitely remember your name.

Every big DJ i've seen that has their name on a laptop is done with a his name in a nice font. The same is used on flyers, business cards, etc. That becomes the brand.

Like I said, I'd shoot for something like on the flyer vs. a corporate logo
Yes and there's a simple reason behind it. It takes years and billions of market dollars to establish a recognizable logo while something spelled out is instant marketing.

That is a very good point. However I would also want to have something recognizable and slick for biz cards, gear items (like a sticker for my laptop, banners, etc).

On my tech form I am on (ArsTechnica) a number of people have commented how a 45 spacer looks like 3 penises. <facepalm>

a contact page and radio/soundcloud page would be nice... your logo is great but would serve as more a icon next to a nice font for your logo... overall your site looks great, but i would prefer a different colour or image for the background.

I would agree synthet1c, the logo, even the new one, seems a little lacking in "message". I may go straight up name, I need to believe on it some more.

Thanks for the RGB/CKMY tip. I used to be a print and web designer and made a couple mistakes to remind me to switch to the relevant palette in the past.

the problem is you aren't giving enough information in the logo.. And that the original logo would take a company many years to get enough brand recognition to be able to use on it's own.

Also if you are designing for the web change the colors to RGB so they display properly on computer monitors, CMYK is for print.

Well not too concerned about the kids. My target audience would probably be more late 20's to 30somethings. Sorry Wiz Khalifa will never touch my decks. (Just really saying that in jest. Just don't really feel newer hip hop acts that much).

Hmmm too corporate again. I really can't do graffiti style in illustrator to make it a bit more fun.

hate the colour scheme... the colours look really desaturated, but maybe they are CMYK not RGB. Also the corporate style will only work with corporate clients. It will never resonate with the kids or club goers.

If I was to make a logo I believe I would just have a cool font type .png instead of a symbol.

Well I had a history of using it for other creative endeavors. For DJing it's ~1 year but it's not a big brand name (funny to even say such a thing.)

One random concept I had was to change up to DJ LT or just LT. My non-DJ name that is all over the internet is LTParis. I quick logo idea I had was this:

Name is fine me believes. If you have a history of using it then it's familiar to you, too and less thing to worry about concerning getting another name.

So funny, between this site, and one of the other popular DJ sites I am getting totally mixed responses

Logo is too corporate
Logo is slick and clean
Name is too business like, believe design or producer
Name is unique

Consensus, we do not have.

I might do a redesign of the site. While this version was focused really just on my mixtapes, I believe I might change it up to go in depth.

Thanks, that is why I had chosen to go with it in the first place. Something unique, no.

And thanks on the homepage. I wish I could take credit but it's just a word press template I did some slight mods on. It's much cheaper and less time consuming than starting from scratch. But as I noted above I might need to rebelieve it so I can do more showcasing than just my mixtapes.

Probably no one, but it's all about branding. Since I had that logo at the time it seemed to work.

Interesting thought. I used to be T-Love (middle name is Theodore). But frankly now that just seems corny.

As for the logo being 'sober' that is an interesting thought. When I was in web and print design my slant was very corporate, clean, flat. I might need to take a leap of faith if I was to go crazy with it.
