Weekly Practice Mixes (try to anyway) Posted on: 18.08.2010 by Susann Blachford So I realize my mixing skills are still somewhat sub-par, mostly due to lack of practice. I also have yet to record a mix I would be happy distributing to others. So in an effort to remedy that I'm gonna try recording and uploading at least ONE mix per week. Leeanna Ayla 19.08.2010 | Try this, at the end of a break on one song playing on deck A start a loop of another on deck B but make sure you've got a decent bass line in your loop on Deck B because your going to use Deck B's bass to play on top of Deck A's song, so at the same time kill the bass on deck A and use the bass on deck B. That's very basic so you'll have to play around on when to bring a song in and how to get out of deck A. |
Gregory Finely 19.08.2010 | Recording is acually worse than live, because you want everything to go swimmingly right yet it doesn't live seems to be completely different mainly because you see the reaction and usually unless it's a complete ballsup people keep dancing and dont notice, this admittedly is from past experience when I last played out in the 90's on TT's and used to record mixed on casettes can't see it being any different and practise is the key, I myself dont practise don't have the time, what I do is take the tracks I want to mix do mix hour or 74 minutes, listen to it a few times end to end, pick up the mistakes if any check the arrangement of my playlist, mainly to see if i started it right wrong and adjust accordingly changing the playlist around so it starts of slower picks up and keeps the pace then drops of near the end, sometimes i even remove tracks as I realise they just didn't fit right. you could obviously avoid the above my checking your tracks first, another one of my downfalls i buy tunes i grid i then listen to the first two minutes, i mix lol it's a sure fire way of making mistakes either way just keep on keeping on and you will eventually pick up on things, aka transitions picking the spot to bring in drop out tracks, parts that will make a good area to loop and of course whether to use FX or not, in Deep House mixes i never use FX only loops, Tech and Techno lots of FX along with looping and on top of that filtering and LFO as it makes transitions more inline with the style of music. sorry if this was long and boring hah, hopefully it might be some help |
Susann Blachford 19.08.2010 | Yea I have a problem with that sometimes. I have "recording anxiety" I feel. I've played out a few times, and I make a LOT less mistakes (or maybe I just don't notice as much). But every time the record button is pressed, I get nervous and end up making mistakes and starting over a lot of times....gonna try and just play through from now on like Photojojo suggested. Any advice on spicing up mixing techniques? I get sick of doing the fade in fade out thing myself. I'm not so good at fast cuts, and I need a little help with more exotic mixing techniques. How does one go about using samples in the current version of traktor? Using deck 3 and 4? I'm currently not well mapped at all for those |
Dana Ordinario 18.08.2010 | Not my favorite track selection but overall not bad. I did notice you do something I do a lot myself and that's cut the transition either too much too quick then be real indecisive about wether I should have or not like in between One and some Chords but it's a "practice mix" so who cares but really I need to start getting the mixes as a whole a lot tighter but overall not bad a little more than just fade in fade out would be nice learn some tricks or make some samples to spice it up |
Leeanna Ayla 18.08.2010 | I just skimmed through, but I can say I've heard worse that's for sure. Try to work up to an hour as that seems to be the standard. Another tip is if you mess up something don't stop and start over. Try and play through it and recover. If your playing out you won't be able to stop and start over. |
