How important is it for mashups to have both tracks in the same key?

Sounds like a stupid question, but I heard an 8B acapella laid over a 7A track and it sounded awesome. Do I just play it by ear, b/c I've always trusted the Camelot system, but in this case 8B should only sound good with 8A or 7B...

Depends on the way the mashup is laid really. Are melodic elements gonna coexist?

What do your ears tell you? Does it sound better if you transpose one of the 2 pieces to the other key? Keep in mind key detection software isn't 100% accurate. It's always better to double check manually if the values given are correct or not.
