The gains are the only meaningful analogue component of the digital DJMs, they're pre-ADC. Thus, it's actually possible to fry them a bit by clipping them too hard for too long. Keeping in mind that DJM's actually "clip" about 5 theoretical LEDs above the "OVER" meter level. That being said, I have seen some shit and it's definitely a thing. However, in a conventional CDJs and a DJM setup, using the analogue inputs is retarded and actually more work for less reward than using the S/PDIF lines. The digital gains are completely, well, digital, and thus aren't prone to hot-signal wear. An analogue gain circuit can get worn out from an overloaded signal, but a different pattern of 1's and 0's isn't going to make the DSP/SRC go all SHODAN on you.

That and a missing center click on one of my low pots... That looks like a tough job.

Tatum Ansaldo 02.11.2012	Check ALL ins and outs if you can, including phono preamps. One thing that can go in pio mixers is the master attenuator switch on the back, so check that.
Jenae Hensarling 02.11.2012	Besides obvious physical stuff, I would bring an Ipod/Iphone with a 1/8 to RCA adapter and check each channel to make sure all inputs are working. Preferably I'd check for CF bleed by hooking it up to speakers as well. I always hate how guys with Pioneer mixers slam the levels into the red, not sure if over time that would degrade the quality of the internal components or just the speakers it's sending such a hot signal to. Maybe ask him to show you how where he dj's with the master set at? It will be real easy to tell then if he's slamming the levels into the red. If it was me I would want to be able to hook the mixer up and test all the inputs and outputs before buying. if you have any doubts at all i'd walk on the purchase. There are ton of things that could be wrong with it that you can't or wont find out till you get to using it indepth. Generally if its to good to be true, its generally bad. Maybe I have no faith in society or peoples morals.
