Mad Zach Live/Studio remix competition - The thread.

Okay, here is a space to discuss, share your content and comment about this awesome competition.

I believe the competition is very good, lot of quality material on the packs. Lots of fun, also the prizes are pretty awesome too.

So, here is my song on the studio remix side of the competition.

http://soundcloud.com/alchemy1/lazer-bay

I used only the samples in the pack. Pitching, stretching, adding effects and layering so as to obtain the sounds I liked. I tried to make something more on a style of a slow dark evolving track.

Here's my entry. Definitely not going to win, but i got some good practice, so I didn't waste my time.

Thought I might as well provide some constructive criticism for some of these songs, so here goes.

Alchemy 1/polybius: I really like how imaginative you were with the samples provided, like with that hoover in the background at 1:38. Usually I don't like progressive tracks, but you mixed it up enough to keep me interested. Sound wise, that kick sounded a bit weak, the pad sometimes "swallowed" it up. Other that, nice.

CNK / Griphity: The intro got boring quite quickly for me, and the part where the half step drums stopped and the pad continued on by itself felt a bit sudden. When it "dropped" though, your song sounded much better. The pad drowned out your kick and your snare a bit, and the song went on for longer than necessary, but apart from that it was good.

Travis Trax: Can't find much fault with this, although I felt that the kick was drowned out by the bass a bit, although that might be a matter of preference.

GXVM: Not even going to bother, pretty much perfect :P

EDIT: Bloody hell, my song sounds shit in comparison with everything else. I knew it was bad, but I hadn't realised how bad until now.
thanks for the review mate! really apreaciate it! im listening yours right now. like the fact that you tried a different style with the jungle drum n bass stuff

Guys, the Lazer Bay sound pack is just incredible! But I had to reinstall the system on my laptop (Because of controller's driver problems) and the soun pack was lost. I wonder if anyone can share it with me (via Dropbox for instance). Please, guys!

That's right. though if everybody makes approximatively the same intro i believe it's a bit sad that's all

I don't believe telling people to avoid a whole style of intro is the right way to go about it, a talented person can blow shit out of the water whatever the style of intro

Don't know if you saw my threat on soundcloud but I repost in case you didn't see it. This is not a criticism but more of an advice for the future prods...

"Guys! I've been listening through most of the prod everyone made and there's a lot of good stuff. But if I could make a general comment: Plz stop with this bludy stoopid banal intro with the melancholic detune synth more or less chopped were you had some lil sounds like drops of rain or so ect... Not every one is doig so but when i listen to the songs quite absent mindlessly i have the impression to hear always the same intro. A bit of originality!!! I know you have it in you so take the livin shit out of your minds!!!! I have faith in you!
Remember: most of your tracks are awsome! just be original!!!
Gl & HF
Peace!

by the way when i talk about detune synth I had the pads in mind.... "

and I may had: BelgianJungleSound your track is awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone

I've finished my remix, which was was more than a lightning of inspiration... There're elements of trap, dubstep, electro rave and maybe even complextro fused together. My only problem was getting mixing and mastering done as apart from my DAW, I only own pair of cheap cans. So winning Rokit 6 would be nice but I know, that competition will get rather huge and quality mixes are yet to come... Not that there aren't any good right now (shout out to Xenith & GXVM - your works are amazing).

So here it is - my version of Lazer Bay

ps. I hope my english wasn't too confusing, cause I'm latvian

Very very nice^

I find with things like this the electrohouse tracks are always going to win, not too sure why.

Hey dudes! To answer to elliot I really believe that a if a song takes more than a day to make, it means that you had no inspiration, that you're doing maybe good work, but not making art... Well not everything produced in a day is art, but I hope you got my point ;p as the others said the longest part is mastering, and all the effects part, in fact putting in action what you had in mind, not composing.
As far as I'm concerned I need your feedbacks on my song, see if it's art or not haha

While we're at it what are the live videos like? I haven't seen any yet.

You can do anything you want as long as it uses the original content, saying you've resampled too much is like saying you've pitchbended too much- if its just using the source material it's A-OK
Philomena Ith
29.09.2012
I know that it's ok to pitchbend, strech and alter the given samples anyway we want but I'm still conserned that I've gone too far with resampling. What are your opinions about resampling in this contest?

I thought mine was coming on quite well but this is seriously shit hot^^

I guess trying to create my brand of house music out of a slow electro jam thing is a nice personal challenge though and it might help stem me out of the little inspirational dump in Im in with my EP.

Seriously!

Pros do it all the time while traveling to gigs. It's synthesizing the right clap, kick drum or any other sound that takes the bulk of my production work.

With a sample pack, I believe this contest is pretty cool. You still have to use proper music theory or you will never be able arrange anything and have it sound halfway decent.
Linda Chavda

20.09.2012
You have to keep in mind, that you get more or less finished sounds. When I make a song from scratch, the part which consumes most of my time is the sound design, not the composing.
And one more thing: semester break...

I participated in an ableton contest where you had to make a track in only 24hs, that super tight schedule kind of obligates you to be super concentrated in everything you do. Since then I try to make or at least have the most part and arrangement of the song in the first day. Sometimes it suddenly fits, if in the first few hours I work with a track I dont feel it, I tend to abandon that idea. This time it worked I guess haha.
