My first original track (Drum & Bass)

My first original track (Drum & Bass)

Actually 2 tracks, as I have this:

which is the original version of my first ever track.

And this:

http://soundcloud.com/mwagner77/m-wagner-atomic-playboy-vip

the (in my opinion), much improved rework of the track.

Both done in Ableton, with the second version also using Massive for the synth line. while, I'm proud of how they turned out, I'm also well aware of how much I don't know about production, so constructive criticism is more than welcome.

thanks!

I just listened to the VIP. Constructive criticism first:

When the sample comes in, it's too far forward in the mix. Same with that high wobbling synth. The high hat could come farther forward in the mix in the beginning. The open hat later on has a nice presence. The kick is nice. The snare doesn't pop enough. I know it's drum and bass so it doesn't have to be that impossibly big dubstep snare, but right now it's kind of lost. I kind of wish the sub bass would respond similarly to the wobble bass. Right now it's sort of uninteresting just because it's that one constant note. You could have experimented with its volume, or its rhythm. I understand the choice to leave it on the same note, although it might have been cool to have everything move on that same melodic line that you bring in; the 1-5-3-2-1 thing. There are so many changing textures in this track; the constant sub bass undercuts those. If you made the sub respond to those changes, it would really elevate the track to new heights.

Some awesome things: the first build doesn't do enough to build the energy, but the second and third builds are really good, especially in context with what they drop into; that switch from big and reverberant to focused and heavy is really well done. It's not easy to pull off a great build, so hat off to you. The writing and structure of the track is also really great. The way you introduce melodic lines and different textures, and then bring them back in in a new context, is very smart and demonstrates some great musicality.

Also just generally, for someone who doesn't know much about production, as you say, this is super impressive. The production value is quite high. You have promise, young grasshopper, and you have it in spades. You should be really proud of this track. Keep it up.
