External Sound Cards?
Posted on: 09.12.2012 by Karin Richens
Does anyone know of some good External Sound Cards that I could get? I need one as I am using a laptop and it has one internal soundcard that I use for a monitor but I guess I will need another one to play the master sound.

Not meaning to hijack the thread but, I'm also looking for an external sound card purely for recording mixes as my laptop doesn't have a line in.

Not looking to spend anything over

Who/what is the CD for? Are these for your review? Are these to "audition" for gigs? Either way, the answer is that the Behringer card will be "OK." In the end, it will depend more on the intended listening environment than anything else.

There is a great discussion about sound cards in this talk, starting about 41:20.

The Behringer UCA-222 card (there are several variants with the same model number) is "OK" at best. The card is $25-ish.

The reality is that almost any card will do an "OK" job for any music that is at sensible levels. I record old mix tapes and bootleg tapes (most from 25+ years ago) on a crappy tape player, and after some minor noise reduction (there is an automatic setting in Abobe Audition that I use) the results are good enough for ear buds, the car, or youtube.

If you are looking to publish your mixes as full wav / lossless...look for something better. If you want to playback your mixes for yourself to review your progress....or put them on youtube...the UCA-222 is more than good enough.

I have a Saffire Pro 14 its shit hot. Doubles as a studio card. 4in 6out. You can plug guitars and mics into it without needing extra preamps/di boxes. Plus its firewire so it frees up a usb port.

Another Hi-jack, new to all of this.

I want to run 2 studio monitors from my computer, will this soundcard be sufficient? All I need is 2 1/4" outputs right?

Well this all is pretty great. I'm glad that there are some ones out there that aren't too much. 100$ is a pretty good deal. I will def take all these into account.

Not only do I need somthing with aux sound but is there a possibility of something that could plug in to my computer via one usb and it would allow me to control ALL my gear ? Including all the kinds of audio plug ins, MIDI, headphone. That kind of thing? I used to have one when I was going to high school and i was in a music production class. I believe it was a PreSonus AudioBox. Anything comparible to that?

Pick up a NI Audio 2 and you cant go wrong. If you do parties you will soon discover that the cheapies don't cut the mustard output wise.

The CDs will be given out to people, partly as 'audition' CDs, partly just for listening pleasure. Therefore the Behringer, in my (limited) opinion should be, as you say 'ok'.

Thank you for your help

Cheap: Behringer UCA-222 (there are several variants of this card with slightly different model numbers). This is NOT gig worthy...but will get you working at home with a second output. Mine has stereo out and stereo in. The card has RCA jacks...and a 1/8" headphone jack with volume control as a "monitor" of the output line. I paid about $20. I use this to listen to stuff on youtube while I work at the day job.

Best Value: NI Audio 2. $100-ish. Comes with a full version of Traktor. GREAT card. Small, well build, loud, two 1/4" stereo outs (no inputs). Volume control on each output. This card is gig worthy. I used this card at small to medium (50 to 500) club gigs for several years. It lived in a gig bag, and survived three years of "normal road wear & tear" without any ill effects.

I use Apogee stuff in the studio - the duet is really nice if you don't need a ton of I/O. <$600

The Z2 has an internal soundcard and two outs for headphones, as well as outs for master and booth and ins for two tables and a mic. It comes with Traktor Scratch Pro 2 and timecode vinyls/CDs <$800

I went with the NI Audio 2 and it seems to work great for the price. I believe I paid just south of $100.

If you're just looking for a basic soundcard for monitoring and main output (1 output for your headphones, 1 output to run to speakers/mixer/whatever) then you can't beat the NI Audio 2. For the price it sounds great, plus you get a full copy of traktor pro 2 with it!

Well, give me suggestions on different price ranges so I can decide how much I want to spend?
