Prepping laptop for gig
Posted on: 10.12.2012 by Latina Samon
Remember reading a post ages ago with tips on what to do to your laptop (running Traktor Pro 2.5) to make it as reliable as possible before a gig. No chance I'll find it now so wondering what things people recommend other than turning wifi off?

I've never had a problem @home not using game booster/ power script, but playing out it's better to be safe than sorry so I run both

No problem.

The second part is more extreme but kind of your 'best possible option,' and probably best done when you have downtime, not right before a gig.

edit:

also found this older article about how to specifically configure that user account; looks a little dated but a lot of the information is still fairly accurate.

Running game booster is the same as turning off other stuff. It does the exact same thing, just without you having to manually turn off everything before you play. Just start up game booster and turn off your wifi!
Yeah, on a VAIO. Should have mentioned that.

my recommendation is create a new user for performing under that you only log in to for that. disable all startup applications, if you're on windows, turn off all the visual crap (go to the most basic skin, no 3d effects, etc.)

Edit: looked at it, all it does is kill some unnecessary processes. you can accomplish this just as effectively by creating a user that you log into solely for the purpose of performing, and that way you get the added benefit of having separate configuration as well. apologies for the knee jerk reaction, you described it as something very different.

I don't have a playlist or hotcues anyway, but I'll definitely whack all my stuff on a usb stick as well as the collections file.

I run Traktor on an ancient 2008 MBP. Works just fine.

PS: I don't exactly want to take my brand new MPB 13" to gigs if this old laptop works fine.

Mine runs fine usually. Sometimes goes a bit dodgy if I forget to turn the wifi off though. Just wanted to minimise the chance of any glitches at a gig

I mean, I run it from a 3 year old 13" MacBook Pro and a friend uses it on a 1 week old untweaked Windows 8 install and both run great.

To be honest, I still have to be convinced that Traktor actually runs shitty on a Vista install, let alone a decent W7 install.

What's the deal with leaving Traktor open for however long without using it as well as the s2 being disconnected?
Doing an opening and then a closing set and would like to keep the tracks I've played notification up. If it's an issue though it's no biggie.

All the UI type stuff is independent for each account. However, i believe if you disable devices that may affect all users.

If I disable stuff in the new user account I'm guessing it won't affect my regular user?

Gamebooster.
Disable all network adaptors, acpi.sys battery controller, webcam in device manager
Turn off all the fancy windows glitter, e.g aero peek.
Run a thorough defrag.
Rock out.
