What do you think about when you DJ?
Posted on: 04.01.2013 by Sheilah Kurzhal
When I DJ ...

I believe about Sync, Harmonic Mixing, Vinyl vs. Mp3 (which is better), what I'm gonna wear when I DJ next week ... stuff like that.

Sometimes I find myself pondering why no one in the venue is mad at me for using Sync and Beatmasher 2 ... because the experts that often intrude on discussions I'm having regarding digital DJ'ing, are very adamant that they will.

Please don't ban me.

For the record ... someone took it upon themselves to delete a portion of my original post. I know why ... and it's cool.

But this is turning into an awesome thread ... I laughed my #ss off as I scrolled down the list!

That's cool, Zer0 ... I was being sarcastic with my list ...

But I love that you brought up stress on the gear (and ears). I CAN'T STAND drinks and smoke chilling around the rig! Or people that just don't get it! "Back up, homie ... Keep your drink (and smoke) away from my setup!" Only person blowing smoke on the Macbook is gonna be ... ME!

I find myself doing the same thing, as well ... Except I try to key in on the best dancer ... And FEED her or him with the style they respond best to! They'll then show the others how to do it ... and make weaker dancers more likely to stick around in the mob that the good dancers create!

But if it's just a chill shindig where the music is secondary, I believe about my place a DJ. I believe about how good I am, how bad i use to be, and how great others are, and then I try to place myself appropriately without bias. "no you cant find out what that knob does"

"how'd you even get up here?"

"did you see that chick throw up?"

"hahahaha she busted her #ss"

"how long has it been since i dropped the bass last?"

"i hope i dont beak my headphones in the middle of my set"

"what time is it?"

"did i bring that one cd?"

"i wonder how many times somebody will ask me to play the motto"

"Did i hook up the charger to my laptop?" (although i can say I've never thought about this since im new to using my laptop in my setup, I can imagine someone has thought this before and gave themselves a minor heartattack)

Pretty much as above. Or would be if I was in a club.

More generally (as I mix at home), I am usually believeing

"how long since I last had a smoke? Was it the last tune? Would it be unreasonable to have another?"

"how long since I last had a beer? Was it the last tune? Would it be unreasonable to have another?"

"how long since I last had a vodka? Was it the last tune? Would it be unreasonable to have another?"

"how long since I last had a piss? Was it the last tune? Would it be unreasonable to have another?"

"FUCK, this tune is about to run out while I have been fucking about drinking, smoking and pissing!!!"

I keep my thoughts on music and music only no matter how hard it can be Since I'm using a lot of different effect presets mapped to my controllers I got a sort of buffer in my mind letting me know what should I apply to set in next 64 beats or less - I'm not a robot btw. After more than 10 years of DJing mixing tracks comes pretty natural to me and I always got a peace of my mind focused to live remixing keeping my sets more interesting to crowd.

I foresee a troll hopping on this post like "ALL DJ'S FEED THE BEST DANCER! This has been discussed!"

I don't really know what to say ... or do with my hands!
