MF Pro Beatmasher Freezing Issue at Gigs
Posted on: 26.11.2011 by Eden Danel
Hey all,

Back in September, I added a MIDI Fighter Pro Beatmasher to my DJ setup. For the most part, I absolutely love my beatmasher. At home, I have no noticeable issue with its functionality and found it a great addition to what I've been doing, but I've had quite a few frustrations when taking it "in the field" so to speak.

I'm a touring pro DJ playing on both sides of the Atlantic. I've only begun to take my Beatmasher to gigs with me over the last month or so. Since making the purchase, I gave myself some time to get used to it and get to know it before doing so. Since then, I've had about 5 gigs where I've used the MF Pro. One was totally problem-free, but at every other gig I experienced issues with the MF freezing up on me. Things would start out fine, but after anywhere between 5 and 20 minutes, I'd suddenly get no response from any of the buttons or the faders. Traktor, however, would generally continue to function properly. When I have my gear set up at home for practice, recording, etc, the MF functions as it's supposed to and I have no issues at all with freezing. I've ONLY had this problem at clubs

I've had two incidents that were particularly frustrating:

1. Wednesday evening , I had a gig and experienced the freezing issues with the MF Pro. I didn't believe too much of it beyond annoyance because I would unplug the MF, plug it right back in, and things would be fine for a good while. However, the freezing happened repeatedly and in the Middle of my set, while hitting one of the beat slice buttons, the sound completely glitched out (by this, I mean loud noisy stuttering) and I had to immediately cut to the next track. I unplugged the Midi Fighter, but that noise was actually "stuck" on my channel A until I could reboot Traktor, even with no track playing or when loading a different one. I had to use deck C in its place for the remainder of my set. This glitch/freeze with lingering noise on the channel had happened on one other occasion, but it was during soundcheck so I had a chance to reboot Traktor before the club actually opened.

2. Several weeks ago, I was in the UK and played a gig there. I was experiencing frequent freezing on my MF Pro, but found that 9 times out of 10 the unplugging and replugging trick did not help the issue at all. In fact, not only would the Midi Fighter freeze within a few moments of starting up, most of the time it wouldn't even work, period. A few of the LED buttons would blink (I can't remember which, sorry) and it would respond to no commands. In the event it DID work upon being restarted, it would only be for about 2 minutes before freezing on me again.

My setup doesn't change, whether I'm DJing in a club or just working on stuff at home: NI Kontrol S4 (standard mapping) and MF Pro Beatmasher running into a 13" Macbook Pro with Traktor Pro 2 (all latest patches installed). I'm also using the Focus AB .tsi file for the MF with the S4 added in. My S4 is completely stable and I've had few problems in the year I've owned it.

In international settings, the only difference is that I have to change the type of plug I'm using. In both cases, I swap out the plugs on both my Macbook Pro and S4 power supplies with the adaptors made specifically for this gear by Apple and Native Instruments themselves.

Anybody know what's going on here? Anyone experienced issues like these? Admittedly, I'm still a bit new to working with MIDI Fighters, so there's a lot I need to learn, but I simply can't figure out what could be causing the issue, especially because it's a bit like a Jeckyll and Hyde thing in terms of dependability.

Any fixes? Anything I can do to prevent these sorts of issues in the future? I love my MF Pro and what it can do, but I really need to be able to depend on it if I'm going to use it in a live situation.

Any help would really be appreciated on this one. Hopefully I've provided enough info, but if more is needed I'd be happy to answer any questions.

Ive seen similar happen but not as frequent as ur issue. For me, a quick unplug and replug would fix it.

U may need to do some troubleshooting:
1. Try cable switch as others mention
2. Get a midi message monitor app that u can use to check whether signals are still being sent when the mf freezes. I believe midimonitor is the popular app for macs (im on pc and use midiox).

#2 will give u a good sense of where the problem lies (mf unit? Mac settings? Traktor?)

Just a quick update on the problem for everyone who had been offering advice and anyone reading who may have been having a similar problem.

Seems that the USB cable was indeed the culprit. As soon as I swapped out the stock cable that came with the MF Pro for a much-higher quality one with ferrites, it seems that everything works fine now. Played a solid 5-6 gigs with the MF Pro since switching the cables and all were problem-free. No freezing, no glitches, no lingering noise.

Really makes me wonder who the MF Pros don't ship with a more suitable USB cable, but for anyone out there having a similar problem to what I'd been dealing with, there's a very high chance that swapping out your cable will be a quick, easy, and inexpensive fix.

Thanks to everyone who helped out!

@ Willinfluence: Yep, that's the one. I have to admit, I was wondering if this cable was any good as soon as I got it. Gonna try swapping out and seeing if that has any effect. Considering this problem has only come up at gigs, next time I play out (in 2 weeks), I'm gonna show up early and play around for awhile to see if the same issue turns up with the new cable. Sounds like it's fine to keep using the DJTT one for the S4 though.

@kevz718: The first time it happened, it seemed like a quick unplug and replug would sort things out, but considering the problems that occurred at other times, seems there might be another underlying issue. Gonna try the cable switch and install midimonitor or something similar to see what happens when the freeze occurs. I know that when I've tried pressing the buttons or using the faders when the midifigher is frozen, no effects will be triggered and there's no LED feedback, but I don't know if underneath it all the signal's still going out.

Thanks for the help, all of you. Going to try these fixes and I'll report back on my progress.

The USB cable that comes with the MF Pros is crap,
I had to ask for a replacement cable from djtt
after a week or so of having my pro

The USB cable you got with your pro, is it really long and has the right angle connection plug.

If so then that could be the problem or added to your problem

Hopefully all MF pros and classic come with the good old DJTT USB cables

I still use a vci-100 and play out at club evening once a month, I found the first evening I played there the vci became unresponsive until I swapped the USB cable for one with a ferrite. Lighting and other gear can play havoc.

I've just got a MFpro beatmasher a cpl of weeks ago and first thing I thought when I opened the box was I need to swap the USB cable.

The gold plated Store cable will have a ferrite, but if it's like mine the MF stock cable will not.

TBH, I'm actually not sure.

For the S4, I'm using one of the gold-plated USB cables DJTT was stocking in the shop (not sure they still are or not). Obviously, these were designed with Digital DJing in mind, but I don't remember if they had ferrites on or not.

For the MF Pro, I'm using the stock USB cable that the unit shipped with. Again, don't know if this cable has ferrites on it.

I'd certainly be willing to swap out the cables and see if that improves the situation (I'll be massively happy if the fix is that simple). Beyond that, it's still a mystery. And I did try reimporting the TSI file several times, but that didn't help.

Could be USB cable interference are you using HQ USB cables with ferrites on?

Just thought of the one major difference between my home setup and the way I'm set up at clubs, just in case it makes a difference....

At home, I plug the S4 directly into my monitors. In a club, I'm generally connecting my S4 to a channel on the house mixer, since it's often inconvenient if not impossible to connect the S4 directly to the mains. Maybe this is coincidental, maybe not, but the one gig in which I didn't have issues with the MIDI Fighter was the one in which I was connected directly to the PA.
