Traktor load reaches max periodically and crackles music
Posted on: 05.01.2013 by Santana Bergmann
I'm on a 1.7Ghz (2.4 with turbo boost) core i5 with 4 gb ram (the new Lenovo Yoga) and when I hook up my audio 2 the CPU load meter on traktor goes all the way up for about 2-3 minutes and this makes the music crackle up. After a couple of minutes it comes back down and everything works fine, and an hour or so later this whole thing happens again.

Really frustrating when this happens in the middle of a set. What can I do to fix this?

Jshawpro, I tried disabling multicore support and it does the same thing.

Maybe I need a better audio interface which does some of the processing it needs by itself, and doesn't dump all the load (which is inconsistent) on the CPU?
did you make sure your hdd isn't set to sleep at an hour? did you disable acpi? did you follow the optimization tips? did you try gamebooster? is your wifi off? is your virus protection running in the backround?

And I bet you feel that way because you're a semi pro or professional with serious obligations.

I have extensive years on both (3 steady on OSX to date) ... DAILY hobby, semi and professional use.

Ableton Live ... Focusrite Interfaces ... Native Instruments Komplete ... So many others ... OZONE ... Adobe CS5.

Maybe some of these people haven't tried both.

I PERSONALLY HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYONE SAY THAT THEY'RE GOING BACK TO WINDOWS BECAUSE IT WORKS BETTER FOR [INSERT ADVANCED CREATIVE COMPUTING TASK HERE] .... EVER.

Someone's gonna hop after this and say that they or their friend went back to Windows (probably to pirate vst's and programs) ... but I've been around working creative professionals for a while. --> I <-- always hear it the other way around.

After some research on this topic today ... something jogged my memory. I accidentally changed my sample rate to 48,000 ..

I was having those once every 30 - 45 minutes drop outs while I was playing live one evening ... I swapped over to the clubs system ... And found that mistake .... Dropped her back down to 44,100hz (standard) ... Went back in and it was all good.

I know that's basic ... and probably not your problem. But it does seem like the guys are correct. Some Windows optimization may be your solution. I was hoping that, because the problem sounded identical to mine ... that it was an easy fix in Traktor settings ... like it was for me.

But on my Early 2011 Macbook Pro ... Thats the only "major" problem I've encountered ... without ever optimizing my OS.

Good luck!

I suspect you're right about the audio interface. My only experience dealing with NI interfaces on PC laptops is that they mysteriously sap huge CPU resources even when they're sitting idle with no audio app running. Never had a problem like this with any other interface on my PC laptop. I've opted to steer clear of NI interfaces and all the 'optimiation' required to make these things work on PC. It's been much simpler to just get another interface that works.

That's great for you. I wish I was that fortunate.

I didn't expect my thread to become a heated mac vs. pc debate that almost always ends where it has just ended.
I'm a pc guy and have always been and believe I will always be as long as mac is the only serious contender for everyday use.

I do have to commend apple on taking the business model they have, where they themselves design the hardware for their os. Unlike Microsoft which just focuses on the os and has 3rd party companies (who want to maximize their profits) build the hardware.

However, mac os isn't nearly as rigorous as windows. It's based on UNIX. While windows was engineered from scratch, thus allowing programmers and users more freedom and flexibility.

Try searching for Windows optimization articles and threads for traktor (im on my phone so tough to link). Disabling the acpi battery made a big difference for me. Some say to disable it within BIOS as well. Some say gamebooster works well also.

I'm just shooting right now ... I'll find out what caused this for me and share when I do. But I'm struggling to recall the mediums I searched to find my solution.

For now, please verify the position of your "multicore processor enabled" setting. Some say, having it ON can do more harm than good on certain machines. Worth a shot. I don't recall if that was my problem tho... I'm still digging. Maybe someone else has experienced this and will chime in. I do the recall the solution being somewhat difficult for me to find .. but a simple fix.

This happened to me!! And I cannot believe I cannot remember what the solution was! I was live and it started (exactly as describe) periodically, making that sound and I found that by wiggling my USB cord (TEMP FIX not the culprit) it would go a way for another hour or so. Let me believe for a sec and I'll remember! It was soooooooo annoying and kind of scary out there live like that.

My only concern is that I'm using OSX ... And it could be a different issue. I'll get right back with you ...
