Beginner Sound Setup
Posted on: 21.01.2013 by Shantae Kaing
Haven't done any DJ'ing in awhile, and when I did I just used a basic setup of 1 powered behringer speaker with my vci100 and audio2dj soundcard.

Im supposed to DJ 2 weddings this year and I need to get a real setup finally. I am a complete noob when it comes to anything sound/speaker related. I would like to get 2 speakers and a sub if possible, I thought about just getting a powered sub to add with the powered speaker I have, but I have no clue how all this would hookup to a soundcard with only 2 ports, as the speaker takes up 1 and headphones take up another.

Any advice would be appreciated on if I need a new soundcard, or what I need to power 2 speakers and a sub. Like I said I have no clue about any of this and its driving me crazy trying to look up stuff.

Edit: So i guess I could just add another powered speaker? Can I hook 2 up to the 1 port on a soundcard though

Thanks

I'll agree.

He needs an emergency source of audio. whether it is a cd player or an ipod hooked up to his spare channel/line in on the mixer.
especially if this is an untested system. if something should fail, he has a backup.

My mobile amp racks all have spare rackmount dual CD players (or a 1U SD card player like the "American Audio Media Operator Media Player 1U" or a "Denon DN-F300") in it just for emergencies. (Ebay or Craigs list should turn up used ones). again, an ipod will work also. just keep it charged.

You don't want an epic fail for a wedding reception.

Don't forget lights. that can make a big difference in setting the mood.

Also consider rentals if you cant afford all of your gear ahead of time, I have more then once had to rent additional speakers and lights. Since i tend to do more club mixing and after hours events, I don't own a crapload of mobile gear other then enough for a small hall.

Edit
In looking at the the setup you have now..
it looks like it is this setup:
VCI >usb> Laptop >usb> soundcard(channel1) > Mixer > amp(if you nave one) > Speakers.
your headphones would go into channel2 on the soundcard
your monitor speaker would have to be plugged into the mixers aux output with an independent volume control (booth, monitor, or at the worst the headphone out).

I am sure this is similar to how you do it now without the extra amp in the setup.
you have to believe of the soundcard and the VCI as a single unit with 2 stereo outputs.

don't use duct tape. use gaffers tape...that's what it's made for. duct tape can strip paint off walls and can leave a residue.

He doesn't have a mixer yet. In my opinion, he doesn't need a mixer.

And yes, just like I stated, he needs a 1/4 inch TRS to (2) 1/4 inch TS cable.

He needs one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-YPP117-in.../dp/B000068O54

And two of these: http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Loverocket all he needs to to is run a stereo trs to 2 1/4 inch mono inputs on the mixer he bought. Straight out from there to however he wants to run his speakers (main out and booth on that mixer i believe). Headphone cueing to be run from remaining stereo out on audio 2.

After rechecking the spec there's 3 stereo line inputs on it.

I'll be back later. I have to run. Main problem with that soundcard is that the outputs are stereo. Your speaker (Behringer B215D has mono inputs) So you need to get an adapter (may come with the soundcard already) that is a 1/4 inch stereo to (2) 1/4 TS MONO.

You may need some adapters to accomplish this.

Be back soon. Good luck.

You said you had one speaker and you are getting another speaker. What's the subwoofer talk about?
What kind of speaker(s) do you have?
What kind of inputs on the back of the speaker(s)? RCA, 1/4 inch, XLR, Speakon?
Are the powered? (Have AC power and amplifiers in them)

A 4 channel soundcard has 2 sets of outputs. So don't get confused. Every generic laptop soundcard has 2 channels (left and right). That's just a simple stereo signal. Your mom and dad have two channel soundcards.

audio2

i believe i have it working so far. I had to re-install traktor. It gets messed up when you do so many changes sometimes. Now its working, it seems a little quieter then when I was going without the soundcard, but still loud enough.

now i just need to get a mic, and the 2nd speaker.

For the second speaker, i assume i just hook it up just like the first one, but the back of the sub on the left input looks different then the right input?

my soundcard has 2 outputs though

you need to grasp the concept of audio signals. Stereo means 2 channels (usually left and right)
Your four channel soundcard has 4 outputs. But, each output has 2 conductors.
Your CUE output (headphones) has Channel 1 (right signal and common shield) and Channel 2 (left signal and common shield).
Your MASTER output has Channel 3 (right signal and common shield) and Channel 4 (left signal and common shield).

Each headphone driver and each speaker takes one (two conductor) channel.

Don't ever use a stereo cable (3 conductors) as a speaker cable. *Unless you are going balanced outputs and that you will learn about later.

ok i figured it was just some setting that is messed up. i didnt have much time to mess with it last evening . I will work with it toevening

I would hit the headphone button on the controller to put that channel in my ears and it would make the speakers louder, and then i would turn the little volume nob for the headphones up and it controlled the speakers. I will report back, I need to reinstall the drivers and just start from scratch probably.

thanks

You will need to use your soundcard and set the internal outputs appropriately in Traktor. The Audio 2 has 2 stereo outputs so one for main and one for monitor (plug you headphones in to the audio 2 out out you selected for monitor).

got all the gear i need minus the microphone

only question is the cueing in headphones now. Do i plug into the mixer with my headphones? Or do i need to figure out how to get the soundcard to work with the mixer? Because right now if i plug into the mixer i can hear whats playing in the speaker but cant figure out how to get the seperate channel. Do i need to plug into a channel on the mixer or the headphone thing?

weddings....

Cordless Mic
2 Subs if in a church with like 250-400 people
1 monitor, 3 speakers (powered or whatever) I like mackies and powered
atleast 3 tripods, monitor can just be on a chair or whatever next to you
Get an external sound card for your rig.. like an audio 6 or whatever

bring extra speaker wire and duct tape, duct tape down all the wires everywhere.. if its a wire, it needs to be taped.
have a glass bowl for a tip jar, and dont neglect to get a song list from the bride

use craigslist, should only run you about 600 bucks or so... maybe 800 for quality basically new gear s

Bumping instead of creating a new thread

Ok picked up this mixer
WBk4Ofk.jpg
and an alto sub

I have it setup without a soundcard, Laptop into the mixer as pictured above and then to the speaker and sub.

without the soundcard i dont know how to get my headphones working so i can cue up a track? I tried plugging in the soundcard and doing it that way, but either my bindings are all messed up or something is weird, it would control the speaker and not let me cue anything up?

any ideas?

behringer eurolive b215d - this is the powered speaker i have already

i believe ill make a trip over to guitar center this weekend, and see what i can get, mixer/sub/powered speaker. Lights too.
Lauretta Ehrhorn
21.01.2013
Oh you will of course need some lighting too unless the venue has some already.
Lauretta Ehrhorn
21.01.2013
I don't know the speakers you are using/intend to use so it's hard to say. You could use a desk or a DJ mixer depending on your preference. Yes you really only need some backup options but if you went the DJ mixer route you could route the Audio 2 to two separate channels and mix externally. It's really dependant on your preference. Soundcard routing would be usb out compuer to mixer then out to sub and using the xovers send to tops. If you want to send full range to tops then use another output from the mixer.
Shantae Kaing
21.01.2013
They will be smaller venues, so pretty much I could get away with adding a mixer/1 more powered speaker and a sub?
Thanks for your response!

You have any recomendations on mixers? Doesnt need to be fancy, just need it for the inputs like you said. And so do I still keep the soundcard between the mixer and my controller?

edit:

this ok?
Lauretta Ehrhorn
21.01.2013
Oh and 2 powered tops with one sub is probably the bare minimum needed PA wise. You may need more depending on venue size, amount of people attending etc.
Lauretta Ehrhorn
21.01.2013
I'd seriously consider adding a mixer to your setup. What happens if your computer fails? You will need extra inputs for a back up audio source until you can identify the root of the problem. You will most likely need a professional mic input source too for a wedding. A mixer will give you XLR outs which will minimise any noise interference too.
