Any interest in learning about multi-boot joy? Posted on: 15.02.2011 by Len Lukawski I ordered a new laptop this morning which should be here in a few days. I am planning on wiping the factory loaded Win7 and creating a multi-boot machine. The first partition will be for day-to-day work, the second will be music/graphic production and the third will be for the S4. I will obviously focus on the S4 partition.I wanted to check in and see if there is much interest in me documenting the process? I may write it up with screenshots, put a video together, or both. None of what I am doing is rocket science but there might be a few things people can learn. SmiTTTen | |

Karolis Petrauskas 17.02.2011 | Do it! =) |
Len Lukawski 17.02.2011 | So the machine was delivered today. I hope to start on this over the weekend. |
Len Lukawski 16.02.2011 | If you get the right Velcro that will totally work (Joann Fabric is your friend - they have an astonishing range of velcro with all kinds of strength). I work with a consultant who travels 100,000s of miles a year and uses 2 WD passport drives with velcro'd to his Lenovo laptop. The most frequent comment from customer is, "cool........". As for the SSD - unless I had some application that lived or died on latency I might still drop my $$$ elsewhere. What is it that is causing you to consider getting the SSD? (other than it's proper cool). Having said that $149 is a good price, i just hate Newegg and will not buy from them. |
Karolis Petrauskas 16.02.2011 | Good idea on the NAS. I was considering putting in a small ssd, like a 60 or 120 for apps and OS only. Then I was going to ghetto it and velcro an esata 2.5 enclosure to my laptop lid for everything else. I say a 120gig for 149$ on newegg. I'm not completely sold on the idea yet, I haven't tested an ssd for speed. The reason I got the XPS was because I saw it at Best Buy for 1000$, Dell had the same configuration for about 1400 at the time. |
Len Lukawski 16.02.2011 | I spent 6 weeks looking at every half decent laptop on the market. I looked at online configs for Dell XPS, Dell Alienware, HP DM4T, D5, D6, Envy 14 & 15 + Beats Edition etc. Most of them had an SSD offering but the pricing right now is off the charts for the return in value they bring. I also looked at buying an SSD from another vendor but just couldn't justify the additional expense. In the end I decided to worry a little more about the pieces that either couldn't be upgraded or would void the warranty. The quickly leaves you with the CPU and GFX chip. This Samsung right now is also a steal in my book. There's nothing out there with this kit in this price range. One of the other things worth considering is drive speed for Traktor. I have a Dlink DNS-323 NAS on my cat6 home network which is where my Traktor music collection is stored. When I first got the S4 I was sure I would have to have all my tunes locally. It seems that Traktor loads tracks into memory and hence the drive speed on system is somewhat irrelevant. Today I play my stuff directly from the NAS and copy stuff locally if I need to make it portable. I am going to add this to my signature: Ask me a question, I will write you a book |

This has all gotten f***** up in the last hour now as those [insert expletive of your choice] at newegg.com cancelled my order with no explanation and I now have to wait 3-5 business days to get the funds and reorder the system from somewhere else. iRATE! |
Karolis Petrauskas 15.02.2011 | Out of curiosity why are you using 3 partitions and not 2? Wouldn't the tweaks for graphics/daw and the S4 be the same? I'd believe if I were using 3 partitions 2 would be for os and 1 would be storage. Are you going to use Tiny7 for the audio stuff? |
