Traktor S$ and BPM's on external drive
Posted on: 02.03.2011 by Val Galaviz
Hey guys, i posted this on NI community s 3 days ago and havent gotten any response, pretty weird since i have read some users having BPM scanning issues.Hoping i'll have a better result on these community s!!

Has anyone else had this problem? I analyzed tracks from an external drive because thats wherei keep all my music and it shows the BPM for some folders and not others. In some folders the BPM shows for one song but not the rest...After i finally got the S4 to work on a Windows laptop(by reading this community of course) without drop outs and crackles, now this, ugh, frustrating.
I've been a Virtual DJ user since it first came out (ver. 5?) and loved the simple process of scanning for BPM's and i dont see anyhthing like that in Traktor for the S4.Could it be a Windows issue again?
I have about 2TB of music on an external andf believeing about inputting the BPM's manually.
Please HELP!
Thank you

If I were using an external drive I would just plug in my backup drive that I had so painstakingly mirrored to my other drive. That said, I would never use an external as my main source.

do you/anyone know to install traktor with the database on the external drive? is this recommended?
You need to set the root folder to the external drive, but it isn't really recommended.

Yeah, that's highly inefficient. You have a number of options...this might be the easiest:

You can right-click a folder and then choose 'Import to Playlists' (from memory), and it will create a playlist based on that folder name.

So create a folder under playlists called 'HipHop', then add playlists you imported from your file structure.

The only problem with this is that playlists are not dynamic. So if you add something to an existing subfolder you will need to update manually.

thx padi, im actually new to traktor, ive been using another dj app that let me search through explorer
@ Chilly,ok i understand that, but how do i transfer the music to the folders i create? for example on my external i have a folder called HipHop and in it there are subfolders by each artist from 2pac to YingYang, inside each artists there are subfolders for each album.
Do i import the HipHop folder first? or do i create a folder first then import?
I prefer to have my folders categorized by genre then inside that folder would be artists, then in artist folder would be their albums,i know this a 3 step process to view my music but ive been used to this way for so long now
Thx!!

any notable changes to browsing in TP2?

You have to create folders and playlists under those folders. Traktor Pro changed how it handled files from earlier versions.

Well, it's a known fact that Traktor is slower and partially shows info in Explorer mode. At least I was believeing you were navigating the collection.

thought i'd share what NI support told me, what i was doing wrong was looking in the explorer folder which will not show the BPM's,kind of annnoyiong because i'm used to my folder structure labeled by genre
Can i edit the folders traktor provides to reflect my folder structure on my external?

NI's response:

Open TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 MANUAL ENGLISH. click on HELP top left of Traktor app.
Select Open Manual.

Click Importing Your Music tab
3.2 Importing Music Folders

after adding the music folder in Traktor Preferences. Then analyze under the TRACK
COLLECTION folder. Right click on the Track Collection folder and choose Analyze
option.

Next

In Traktor's browser Tree only when selecting the Track Collection folder will the
BPM and Track Collection information show up correctly...

If looking at the music collection through the EXPLORE folder in Traktor Browser
tree, The files are being accessed and view through the computer, not the Track
data base collection.

Open the Track Collection folder and view the songs here, the bpm should show be
listed.

No, Traktor does not do KEY detection in the software.

Tell Traktor that's where the music location is in preferences.

Again, my apologies Karlos, as i mentioned,im new to this community thing.Do you have any clue as to how i can resolve my issue?

Chilly, what do you mean add my external drive? I added a folder from my external drive as you mentioned, through preferences, scanned it for BPM and only the first track of 20 in that folder sucessfully showed the BPM.I want to make sure it works i tell Traktor to scan over a terabyte of music to then find out only some were sucessful. Why do they make it so difficult? On my other laptop i use VDJ and whenever i add an ew drive or folder i scan it with no issues, i also notice the VDJ creates an XML file on whatever drive i connect.
How about reinstalling Traktor and telling it to put all it's data on the external, thus requiring the external to be plugged in before starting up traktor.
If i cant get this resolved,im jumping on the Denon MC6000 and my S4 will be returned, sold or will collect dust until NI can resolve this.I really like the unit but it's not as plug and play as they advertise.
By the way, I contacted NI about this, when they reply i'll post their response.
Thanks to all!

You should try adding your external drive to the music collection in preferences.

The issue is that Traktor does not pick up the BPM's on an external drive.I scanned a folder with 20 songs on the external and saw Traktor scanning but at the end BPM's showed 0.000.I then copied the folder to my laptop, scanned for BPM's and it worked!
Can anyone tell me why this doesnt work on an external drive? It's a USB powered drive.Would I have to use a drive with AC power? Would i have to transfer a music folder into the internal drive, scan it successfully for BPM's and the transfer it back to my external? Seems like alot of work!

My other question is how does Traktor determine the key of the song? I choose the option to see this and after scanning for BPM's sucessfully, on the internal drive of course, it still does not show the key.

Anyone having any of these issues?

I've read that i should change the default root directory and and music folder directory to my external drive.

Any help would be appreciated.

the only thing I've noticed is the it detects the BPM incorrectly at times. At which I just use the manual beatmatch shift key thing.

I've seen this problem before, but for the life of me I can't remember what the deal was. You could try and pick a handful of songs that don't seem to want to keep the BPM and move them to your harddrive. If they work there then it's something to do with your external drive.

Traktor doesn't analyze key, you need extra software for that.

Just to clarify, you are right clicking the tracks and adding them to the collection?
Val Galaviz
02.03.2011
thx knaumov, checked that and all is well

@photojojo,thank you..i believe something is wrong with the install.i did as you suggested, went to preferences>file management> and added the option of "analyze new tracks on collection load/import.That option was not on by default.I then added a folder with 9 tracks and nothing,i then chose all tracks and chose the detect bpm(async) and that didnt work.i then loaded a track and of course it displayed the BPM but after hearing the entire song and stopping the track it didnt show the bpm either! theoretically once you load a song the program is supposed to "remember the bpm correct? this is what leads me to believe the installation is corrupt, well corrupt might be a harsh word, but somethings wrong!...any suggestions?

I'm a newbie to this community thing(but a dj for a long time) so i apologize if this reply seems out of the norm
Thank you!!

hmmm, just a idea - check file modes (read only), permissions and ownership.
Leeanna Ayla
02.03.2011
You can right click on a group of songs and select detect BPM. There's also on option to analyze tracks on collection load/import. That'll do new songs you add to the collection. Are you adding the songs to Traktor collection? Doing so doesn't duplicate teh songs it just tells Traktor where they are.
