Will MBP 2.0 Ghz be fast enough for S4?
Posted on: 21.03.2011 by Kesha Orde
Just about to buy a 2nd hand MBP, will this run the S4 properly?

Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core Duo
Memory: 2x1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB
Resolution: 1440x900
Harddrive: 100 GB (5400 rpm)
WiFi: 802.11g
FireWire 400
2 USB

Thanks for any advice you can give.

except Trakor unfortunately doesn't utilise multiple cores yet. Major oversight IMO.

I don't believe anyone answered how a multi core CPU works so here goes:

a core2duo at 2.4ghz is just 2 cores at 2.4ghz. So that is 2.4ghz x 2. They do not work together to be this super processor. How it works is the 2 cores are used to load balance whatever your computer is doing. So instead of one 2.4ghz core being maxed out the load is generally balanced between both.

As it is I have 45% free disk space and use this machine for only Audio.. ableton and traktor and I never connect to the internet unless its for software/system updates, so maybe It's still probably quite clean ?

I'm yet to get my S4 and Traktor 2 . Also believeing about upgrading to a larger Hard Drive so for now maybe I will just upgrade to 10.6 and see how Traktor Pro 1.2.7 runs.. and do a clean install once I change my Hard Drive, and its time to set up the S4 and T2..

Unless ofcourse anyone's had issues with the simple upgrade to 10.6..

oh and when I decide to do the clean install of OS X..
can I retrieve my itunes and traktor playlists, beatgrids etc from the time machine back up ?

If i wear upgrading I would back everything up and do a fresh install. That means installing everything one by one. It's more work, but you get a nice clean system when you're done.

Also If I choose the upgrade option.. will I have to re-install traktor again ?
loose my itunes playlists ?

I went on the theory " if it aint broken.. dont fix it " hence delayed the upgrade.
I remember at some point early last year or late 09 I checked the NI community s and some ppl were having a few issues with Traktor PRO running on Snow Leo.

But Thanks for the input guys.. I will grab the upgrade toevening . I dont see my self trying out Lion atleast till the end of the year.. unless there is significant improvement for Traktor.

As mentioned before I only use this machine for Traktor PRO and dont really get on the internet or anything so wouldn't believe I'd have a lot of clutter on it.

My main priority is to make sure Traktor is running aswel as it did on Leopard, so should I just do a time machine backup and Upgrade to 10.6 or do a clean install of 10.6 ?

thanks again.

Snow Leo is also a great deal more efficient with your RAM than Leo was. Also, Leo is already EOL and Snow Leo will soon be too when Lion comes out. Maybe wait for Lion and pick that up if or when TP2 is compatible.

You'll be fine with Snow Leopard. I really don't know how S4 works on 10.5 but I haven't had any problem with S4 (or traktor scratch pro 3) while using snow leo.
Why havent you upgraded your operating system? You would have a bit faster computer tho. I remember when I upgraded from leo to snow leo I noticed a good difference, even in graphics.. You should just upgrade to snow!

No real performance gain for Traktor, but I like 10.6 better.
Phylis Casablanca
05.05.2011
ok.. but will there be any improvement in performance upgrading from OS X 10.5.8 to 10. 6 (snow Leopard) ?? or should I just stick to 10.5.8.. ?

Probably gonna be running T2 with the S4 from next weekend on. So just trying to prepare my Mac for that.

i run T2 with s4 on a dual core intel 2.3ghz, 2gb ram, nvidia 8600 (256 dedicated ram)
with his dedicated win7 partition runs just flawless.

I also have the same MB (penryn) w/ 2.4ghz and 2GB of RAM on SL 10.5.8. I have a S4 and X1 hooked up to it and its still running strong . No lagging or chopping that I can see/hear. As a precautionary step I will be doing a upgrade to 4GB, as soon as I can figure out how to map this damn LPD8... lol.

If anything I would say just get everything set up and take it for a "spin". I personally will wait for lion to be released

Thanks decarli,

Yeah I was believeing about upgrading, even though I've managed to already free up my hard drive to about 40-45% .

My second question was if I should upgrade to Snow Leopard. OS X 10.6 ?
Or if I should continue with OS X 10.5 .

Is there a significant difference or any issues ?

FLX,
I have the same machine as you (macbook unibody late 2008). It had 2gb ram, 160 hd, 2ghz. It used to run without any problem with traktor scratch pro 3.

Now, I upgraded this machine to 4gb, 260 hd, still 2ghz and i've got the S4 controller and software, and it runs perfectly. No problems so far!

You should be fine with the specs you talked about. But I would recommend you to install a bigger HD. I always keep my laptop with at least 45-50% free to avoid problems.

Good luck !

I've got a 13" 2008 Macbook (Uni body) , the one just before they all became Macbook Pro's in 2009.

This machine is dedicated to traktor, ableton and audio related stuff only. Over the last 2 years its run Traktor Pro without any problems. I'm probably looking to upgrade to a new machine at the end of the year.. If the need arises.

Spec's : 2 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
55GB (160GB Hard disk) free space.

I'm about to get a S4 and upgrade to Traktor2 in a couple of weeks and was wondering if there would be any advantages or if it's advisable upgrading to Snow Leopard ? I know it'll free up around 10GB of space but other than for that ?

Thanks.

There was only a few months in the release date difference, you might pick up a c2d model around the same money which would last you a bit longer (unless its a really really good deal of course).

Edited post : Just looked at the release dates and I got my macbook the week the c2d came out so I guess 2 gigs is the limit. (hope no-one saw that!)
I saw, was just about to reply before you edited it!
I'm looking at C2D machines on ebay now as I want to be sure it'll last me a while. I haven't got cash to be chucking around on new laptops every year!

2.26 C2D with 2gigs of ram, runs like a charm and I don't feel like I need more.

2.26 C2D with 2gigs of ram, runs like a charm and I don't feel like I need more. You can get a better machine to be on the safe side for another year but you don't NEED one for the S4 to run smoothly. It's a late 09 btw

Thanks MaxOne, that's kind of what I was worrying about (being future proof), but wasn't sure how relevant that was.
I believe I'm going to try and get something like this:

2.4GHz 4GB Ram.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm sure it'll be fine but i believe that spec may be a bit "old" and perhaps not very future proof, as updates/upgrades etc start come out

Personally i'd look at above 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo as a minimum and 2GB Ram as minimum.

I go the last of the silver style MBP

http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content...k_pro_open.jpg

But it's pretty full spec (2.5 Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram). I bought it new over a year ago but surely you could pick up something like this.

Spec wise it's tip top, runs snow leopard etc but just the body is older.

Even if you bought a brand new full spec macbook pro you'd be feeling like it was old within a year anyway

I just read the S4 review here on DJTT and the recommended specs are: Intel Core2 Duo 2.00 GHz or Core i5, 4 GB RAM.
This is getting me worried again, as the machine I'm looking at is Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo), and has max 2 GB Ram.

it's quite complicated, and i don't understand it tbh. There must be someone on here who does!
Kesha Orde
22.03.2011
Ah, really? When it says 2 GHz Core Duo, does that mean that for most things you would be getting 4 GHz of processing speed, or is 2 GHz the total of two 1 GHz cores? Sorry I'm a bit of an idiot with this, I haven't bought a computer for about 6-7 years so am a bit out of touch with the technology ]

fyi, Traktor currently doesn't even utilise multiple cores. So I don't know why they ask for a core duo, because it pretty much depends entirely on the clock speed and not on the number of cores. And yeh, 2GB RAM should be fine, it would run on 1GB but probably quite slowly.

Thanks for replying. I checked on Crucial and that model cant take more than 2GB Ram, so I wouldnt be able to upgrade it later. The reason I was worried is that the Sys requirements on NI website just say Intel Core Duo, with no mention of processor speed. 2.0 Ghz will be fine though you reckon? I'm being cautious because I dont want to have to buy another laptop if its not up to it!
