Anyone have a NON native instraments flight case?
Posted on: 01.05.2011 by Chin Thoroughgood
I know there's a marathon case and an odyssey case both with sliding laptop stands. I've got a couple questions...
Can they fit laptops in the case for travel?
Do they have extra room for cables, power strips, headphones, etc.? (I know the NI case has very limited room behind the controller for this)
Do the laptop stands having any kind of locking mechanism? (I know the NI kinda do but its pretty piss-poor from the reviews I've read)
Thanks!

Do you like the Road Ready case? I never use the built in laptop stand and take it out and leave it in my room, but I feel like if I ever need a replacement for my current case for some reason, I'd pick up the road ready case for the weight and lack of gear that I don't use.

I do like the RR case since its a little more compact than the NI case (no laptop stand), but the case with the s4 is still fairly heavy. Maybe a few lbs lighter than the NI case? I also like that its a little more discreet (no big logo and free advertising for NI).

Thx for the welcome!

Odyssey case here too, I like it very much but it its a little heavy (because its built tough).
I modded the underside of my case to fit my laptop under the s4 when in travel, and also modded the latch that stops the sliding stand from coming completely off.

I have no experience with the Marathon Case, but I have the Odyssey case and it's great. There is room for the laptop for transportation in the case, but when you first open the case it says something along the lines of "Odyssey is not responsible for any damage that comes to your laptop by carrying it in this flight case." I believe that you could have it work by using the space under the S4 (which is where I keep my Control Vinyl) and use the foam pads that come with the case to pad your laptop to make sure that it wouldn't be damaged, but the best call would of course be to not use it. There is extra space for Power Strips and cables, and I guess you could fit some cans in there, but I wouldn't again for your own protection. I just wouldn't trust my Denons to not break if I put them in the case, maybe when my HDJ2000s come I might be able to trust it, but not yet. None of the laptop stands have locking mechanisms. There are black tabs on the bolts, but they spin too quickly for it to really protect your stand. I don't trust this, and I find it obtrusive in the small spaces that I normally play in, so I just use an Odyssey L Stand M under the case. The only really bad thing about it is the weight. It weighs around 30lbs...not tight.

It seems like you're looking for an all-in-one bag, and if that's the case, the DJTT S4 Bag looks like it will do a damn good job. The Novation 25 Key bag also has some good reviews, but the Novation Logos all over it scream "Steal Me, Rob this Fool!"

The other option is doing what I do. I carry my flight case and use my regular old backpack for my computer, laptop stand, midifighter, launchpad and Headphones. However I'm traveling from my Dorm to the student commons which are roughly 200-400 feet apart, so the immense weight doesn't toll too much on me, but if I was walking through South of Market in SF (where I live during the summer), I'd want that shit all on my back in a nondescript bag like the DJTT bag (which I might pick up over the summer since I live literally a block from DJTT.)

I hope this cleared some info up for you and I hope you find the right bag for you.
