Help Mapping Gain Knobs to Filter on/off Posted on: 11.09.2011 by Sharyn Prado Hi Guys Its been bugging me for some time... I dont know how to map my S4. Im trying to get the push button on the gain knobs for each channel to act as a switch to turn on/off the filters. I used to mix this way with my old kit and miss being able to filter out individual beats at the push of a button. Can anyone spare the time to talk me through the mapping process, since it seems to be a lot different to my previous set up. Cheers Paul | |
Kecia Wnukowski 07.10.2011 | I didn't review it, only quickly but actually Rainer's method for your specific case would be wrong if you use the copy mode. In the original example, he duplicates the browse mode (as far as I remember) with a modifier, but not the copy mode, ie, meaning the tutorial is not 100% correct. No real issue because having a cue pressed on or off is not a big deal in the end. In your case having a filter on or off while using the copy mode may not be recommended I believe. No, I don't need a way to duplicate the copy mode and all the buttons related behaviour, it's an issue causing me headaches and didn't find a solution. |
Sharyn Prado 26.09.2011 | Heres the tsi for the cue point filter on/off... load the file, make sure its allocated to the S4 and then press either shift and the appropriate cue point. I often use it to swap decks A/B to drop new basslines |
Sharyn Prado 24.09.2011 | Thanks man that was really helpfull |

Sharyn Prado 24.09.2011 | Yeah I tried that but couldnt get it to work at all, Im not sure how to disable the cue function when shift is depressed :/ |
Nedra Fresneda 23.09.2011 | You could map the kills to shift + cue (as in monitor cue). |

The Kills and having the knobs in the minimum position sound the same (at least to me) in the new update, so mapping the kill would become redundant.
|
Sharyn Prado 23.09.2011 | Hmm, I propose to find the sweet spot on the filter, using the headphones prior to engaging a loop or mix, engaging the filter then dropping the loop or mix with the other track pre sweet spotted... then swap the basslines/sweet-spots to get the ultimate sound out of both |

Sharyn Prado 23.09.2011 | I'm gonna have to look into this... it would save time, do you map two functions to the same button, to enable it to be toggled? |
Kecia Wnukowski 23.09.2011 | a low kill mapped to a button as an instant access feature is very convenient and will be better and more efficient than turning a knob if you're looking for killing bass in a drastic way. My very subjective opinion of course but that's something I tend to use on a regular basis. |
Sharyn Prado 23.09.2011 | I tend to find the full kills a little tame when compared to other mixers, tried a couple of the eq options and couldn't see any difference, might just stick to the filters... for now thanks for the input though, very helpful. |

Yup it certainly does, but the plan is to dump alternating filters to swap the basslines during the mix..
As for the crossfader, for the time being, you can't map a fader as a button with hid mode. |
Sharyn Prado 22.09.2011 | Yup it certainly does, but the plan is to dump alternating filters to swap the basslines during the mix... It also crossed my mind that deactivating the crossfader and using that as the on / off switch for the filters might be an option... but how to do that successfully might be a bit tricky ? |
Nedra Fresneda 22.09.2011 | Yes, moving the filter knob activates the filter automatically, then turns it off then it's centered. |
Kecia Wnukowski 22.09.2011 | I didn't try as I don't have access to my s4 right now, but I believe that even if it's off, moving the filter knob(s) will engage itself on. May be not exactly what you wanted but I guess there's no way to negate that. Or may be I'm wrong, you should try. |
Kecia Wnukowski 22.09.2011 | Be careful as you won't be able to map any led feedback on those buttons unless you use the beat phase monitor or volume output, they're the only ones that can fit there.
infinite wisdom

Sharyn Prado 22.09.2011 | Yul... I bow down to your infinite wisdom As you say re-mapping the whole S4 is a pain and would render certain great features redundant... But if you use the additional non lit button when in 4 banks mode... then it will work I'll try this as soon as I get back on monday... fingaz crossed |
Kecia Wnukowski 12.09.2011 | As Padi said, it's a bad idea on this control. One thing to take into account is whatever the controller you won't be able to fit either all options from the software and/or in some cases the options you may have liked previously, so he bit of adaptation (sometimes with regret is necessary). However you could eventually if you're running 4 fx units, map the filter on/off on each one of the free fx assign button for each deck. Otherwise you could use shift+ cue button as there's nothing previewed there but I don't believe that's really practical for what you want to do (well I won't do it personally, that's a function you want to have as an instant access). last option, to remap the full unit...not worth it. |
Nedra Fresneda 12.09.2011 | You can do it, but it will reset your gain value back to 0, you can't override that. |
Sharyn Prado 12.09.2011 | I would like to build on the existing mapping, not using midi ode. Keep the filters on their knobs but disable the on off action on those and use the push button gains instead |
Kecia Wnukowski 12.09.2011 | What's the way you want to do it? Do you want to twist the embedded mapping? Do you want to remap you runit or use the midi mode? |
