Ultimate X1 Mapping for the S4 - Beta v01
Posted on: 25.01.2011 by Gigi Weese
Intro:
After using the S4 a couple of times in the club I missed some direct controls over functions. I typically use a 4 Deck setup but sometimes love to switch to a sample deck. I missed direct control over all 32 Hotcue Buttons. I have on average 6 - 8 Hotcues setup for each track. I also missed buttons to assign all 4 FX to each deck, etc. In order to solve this and to have direct control over most basic functions I remapped the X1 to control deck C / D and control FX 3 / 4. 99% of the time I have my HOTCUE enabled on the X1. That's why I remapped some of the functions to have direct control while the HOTCUE Functions are enabled.

Instructions:

The following settings under preferences will optimize the functionality of this mapping:

Effects: Enable 4 FX Units

Global Settings => Deck Focus
Change from hardware to software. This ensures you have a visual confirmation which deck has the focus (to apply FX to a Deck, Change the Pitch Range, Duplicate Desk, etc).

Mixer => Ensure you have all 3 options enabled in order to see the EQ Kills, FX Assignments, Key, etc.

Loading: Enable loading only into stopped deck (for safety).

Transport: I lowered my Bend % as the default settings is too high, not essential but does help

Traktor Kontrol S4
=> Sample Play Buttons: Hotcue 5-8 which will give you full control over all 8 hotcues on desk A and B
=> Tempo Faders: Relative (Otherwise switching Pitch Range will be a crime)
=> Load Buttons: Jog Mode, you can either load in browse mode with the cue buttons or directly on the X1.

There are 2 modes, Beat Mode & FX Mode

All the Shift Functions are displayed in blue.

BEATMODE

Mode Select:
<FX1>: Switch between controlling the Decks or the FX Units (Beat or FX mode).
<FX2>: Switch between Trackdeck or Sampledeck (left side Deck C, Right side Deck D)

General Section

Focus Section: Will change the focus to a specific deck. Onscreen you can see which deck has the Focus by the orange letter (if you switched to software focus in preferences).

Load Selected: Will load the selected track into any of the four desks.
Duplicate Deck (SHIFT): Will Copy any of the trackdecks to the deck which has the Focus.

Pitch Range: Will display the Pitch range of the Deck in focus and allows you to change the Pitch range to 6%, 10%, 16% or 100%.

EQ Kill: The shift functions are setup to Kill the EQ of deck C, A, B, D. Same layout as on the S4. Ensure you have all options on the Mixer Layout enabled in order to see this onscreen.

Remove all X-Fader assignments with <Shift> + <FX2>.

Trackdeck Controls:
<ON>: Toggles between Play / Pauze
<Shift> + <ON>: CUE

<1>: Enables Sync
<Shift> + <1>: CUP

<2>: Phase monitor + Bend decrease
<Shift> +<2>: Tempo decrease

<3>: Phase monitor + Bend increase
<Shift> + <3>: Tempo increase

{Browse}: Beatjump to skip through a track mostly
<Shift> + {Load}: Unload Deck

{Loop Size}: Unchanged Functionality
<Shift> + {Loop}: Loop Active (unchanged)

Hotcues: Standard unchanged Hotcue functionality with full control over all Hotcues on deck C and D.

Sampledeck controls

<ON>: Group Play if slots are paused, if slots are playing it will mute the playing slots and starts the stopped or muted slots. To group stop all slots hold <ON>.

Volume / Filter: Toggle with <2> between controlling the Volume or the filter of each slot. Use <3> to disable the control of the knobs. The knobs are not relative so this is in order to prevent strange effects when switching from Volume to Filter control.

{Browse}: Setup to control the group Volume

{Size / Loop}: Setup to control the group Filter.

Hotcues:
<1-4>: retrigger or <Shift> + <1-4> to Stop / Play a slot.
<5-8>: Mute a slot or <Shift> + <5-8> to Clear a slot.

FX MODE (UNFINISHED)

Most FX, combos , Sweeps I still need to setup (any suggestions are welcome).

General Section

Focus Section: Will change the focus to a specific deck. Onscreen you can see which deck has the Focus by the orange letter (if you switched to software focus in preferences).

Assign FX Section: Will assign any of the four FX units to the Deck in Focus.

FX Panel Mode: Will switch FX Unit 3 or 4 from Group to advanced mode

Single FX: Will load either the BeatMasher, Beatslicer or Gater into FX Unit 3 or 4 (advanced mode).

This is the first Beta version. Any feedback and suggestion I will use to finish the mapping. I will upload the final version to Traktorbible.

Thanks in advance for any feedback

Regarding the retriggers it really isn't rocketscience. Have a look and see that they are standard setup an mapped. Start mashing the retriggers and I can produce it on my end, always interesting to see if there are solutions but that's also why I called it a beta
Left mine at work. I'll give it a run tomorrow and see if i can recreate the volume issue

I modified the X1 mapping provided with the S4 (which already had retriggers but i moved them), not getting the volume problem you mention.

Sorry, but seems like a problem on your side rather than "known bugs/shorcomings"

The other known issue is that the sampleslot retriggers are randomly causing some of the sample slot to reduce the volume to 50%. Again nothing that I can do but a way around it is to default all sample slots volumes to 50 % with the group knob.

so calling it the Ultimate X1 Mapping for the S4 is a little permature?

Defmd, just wondering if you ever finished this mapping post-TP2?

I would love to use/test it! I've been believeing about mapping the same thing, but I have no time nor knowledge of mapping.

The link is still up and running. However I will release an update of this mapping after TSP2 is released. I am hoping the new software allows the use of additional modifiers as I am currently running into some limits. I want to add DJ Techtools gratification mapping to the FX section. I already have this mapping running on the X1 via midi mode but it would be great if I can include this to my own mapping.

Can anyone acces this account or is it just a waste of my time, thanks for doing it but if you can't even grab the file whats the point!

Is the file available please or am I better of using the ones on Traktor bible?

Thanks on the output... I needed to add the monitor state (in) to the FX1 that seems to have solved it. Needs some further testing but it does the trick so far.
