Simple S4 Question to all
Simple S4 Question to all Posted on: 09.12.2011 by Laure Cantara What is your Master and Headroom setting at? Taking Survey and seeing what the average setting based on replies. And do you have limiter checked. | |
Roy Houn 13.12.2011 | thanks for clearing that up |
Rey Holubar 13.12.2011 | Because the master volume controls the physical (analog) outputs of the sound card. scamo |
Roy Houn 13.12.2011 | ove thing ive often wondered since i got my s4 is why doesnt the master volume knob on the s4 control the master on the software? |
Rey Holubar 14.12.2011 | When in doubt, refer to the manual.
Headroom: This setting is useful when you want to mix multiple tracks or sources in TRAKTOR since each source added will increase the overall output of the mix. By using this feature, TRAKTOR will attenuate its output in order to maintain digital headroom so you don't have to turn down the Master volume via the MAIN knob. If you only mix two Decks at a time, a setting of -3 dB is usually acceptable. If you wish to mix up to four Decks or include multiple samples, a setting of -9 dB is recommended.

Kristofer Krauel 13.12.2011 | Mostapha, out of curiosity do you equalise all of your track levels outside of Traktor with something like mp3Gain? |
Dorie Scelzo 13.12.2011 | Limiter off. Auto Gain on. 24-bit output. headroom at 0dB. master at -14dB. I'm not really sure why I settled on that. And, no, the output is not too quiet. |
Inez Marcinik 13.12.2011 | i dont have any of that enabled, its totally unnecessary and just reduces audio quality. |
Laure Cantara 13.12.2011 | Zaniac, your headphone volume must be low. Do you compensate with the volume on your speakers by turning the volume on them way up? |
Deeann Cheron 12.12.2011 | headroom -9 master - 2 I don't Know why she swallowed the fly? |
Josef Leos 12.12.2011 | My headroom is set to -3db. My master varies but try to keep around 12oclock when possible. SIDE NOTE: I did notice a huge drop in my headphone volume when using -3 or lower. When I updated it changed automatically and I thought my over priced cans were shot. Solved that though. |
Laure Cantara 09.12.2011 | Any more replies? I know we have a lot of good technical DJ's in here |

Lanette Heinitz 09.12.2011 | master -5.0, headroom 0 its an alright setting....i prefer -0 main and channel gain -12 but eh thats me |
Ngan Ernestine 09.12.2011 | also, there is no "simple" right answer to your question. if there was, why would traktor allow you to tweak the (software) main? it depends on your workflow, among other things, as i tried to explain above. any reply such as
master -5.0
headroom -3
headroom at -6db
software master at 0db harware master at 12 o'clock |
Nedra Fresneda 09.12.2011 | headroom at -6db software master at 0db harware master at 12 o'clock I rarely hit the red internally, so the limiter is kinda irrelevant |
Ngan Ernestine 09.12.2011 | Just for clarification: All headroom does is to substract from your master. So setting headroom to -3 and main to -6 is equivalent to setting headroom to "none" and main to -9. Setting headroom to -6 and main to 0 is equivalent to setting headroom to "none" and main to -6. etc. On another issue, there is no setting that is right for everyone. Ceteris paribus, somebody who regularly has 3 or 4 decks on air should set the master lower than somebody who has no more than 2 decks on air. Certain effects can boost volume as well. So somebody who uses these effects needs to set the master lower (again, everything else being equal). If you play "hotter" songs, you need to have your master lower than someone playing less hot songs. Etc. |
robin loo 09.12.2011 | master -5.0 headroom -3 need to do some reading on this topic to see if other preferences are better.. |
Laure Cantara 09.12.2011 | I here you on that Kooper. That's why I curious about the answers. |
Kristofer Krauel 09.12.2011 | Not at my laptop right now but im sure my master is set to -9db and my headroom is -6db. Althought I'm pretty sure the headroom was set automatically and wasn't a conscious choice by me because if I'm totally honest I dont fully understand its use. |
