s4/Audio 10/Pioneer DJM800 Setup Help!
Posted on: 14.12.2011 by Ellyn Zbranek
I am a recent convert to TSP from Serato and am loving everything so far. So many possibilities! My setup is pretty complex and I am hoping to get some help.

This is my gear list:

Audio 10 - TSP2
Kontrol S4
2 Kontrol X1s
Maschine
Pioneer DJM 800
2 Technics 1210 MK5s

I need to know what you believe the best setup would be. I put it all together toevening with my turntables taking up Channels 3 & 4 (Deck A & B) on the Audio 10. I thought I would just run the s4 (Decks C & D) to the input on Channel 2, but didn't believe that I wouldn't be able to do that because I now am trying to use 2 soundcards.

So, my question is, what would you suggest? I want to still use my Pioneer 800 as my mixer with everything running through it. This is my layout represented with words:

Audio 10
Laptop - Kontrol X1 - Kontrol s4 - Kontrol X1 - Maschine
Turntable - Mixer - Turntable

Do I route the S4 THROUGH the Audio 10? Do I get rid of the Audio 10?? I am at a loss.

Thanks so much!

You can. It takes up a sound to do it, and I haven't found a reason to do it that way unless you really want to use plug-in effects

DJ Endo is an idiot.

  • He's using 12-decks worth of control attached to 4-deck software.
  • He brags about computer specs that Traktor couldn't use when this video was recorded.
  • He's using Maschine

Here's what you can do to your current setup.

In my opinion, sound quality and volume gain control will be much better on external mixer as compared to the S4. I highly recommend this kind of setup to be integrated into a 4 channel mixer like DJM800.

*S4 as controller for deck A & B. All the keys, jog wheels, filters and FXs will remain working except for the faders and cross faders.

*SL3 assigned as sound card for deck A & B to be connected to djm400 mixer. Can connect as many channels depending on your sound card n mixer.

I'd ditch the S4. if you run maschine I believe you can route the traktor channels into maschine and then out to the 800 via the audio 10, at least I remember reading something like that

That's great thanks!! I looked yesterday as I have the book and didn't see it. Do you have a link?

By the way, that's why I bought all the stuff, for The Mothership settings!

Go to the traktor bible site they have a tutorial for using external mixing with the S4 and also a tutorial on how to use more then one audio interface. To be honest i would ditch either the s4 or the TT if you wanna use external mixing. If i where you ill keep the S4 with the x1 and machine (like Dj Endo and the mothership) that would be my dream setup!!!!!!!

What would you suggest? The 800 isn't exactly a base model mixer.

I remember the mothership video well, it was the most overkill setup iv ever seen. you should ditch the s4 and upgrade your mixer IMO

Also, let's say I used the S4 and X1s and the tables just for scratching. Can I use my 800 as my mixer instead of the S4 mixer (i.e. output the S4 through the 800)?

But that's just my opinion, and I should point out that I hate all-in-one units because they seem to be really limiting.

Also, what are you using Maschine for? Is it just a controller, or are you actually using it as a groove box

You should in theory be able to run all 4 decks through the audio 10 and mixer and use the s4 purely as a controller, without having to run any audio cables from it, but ive never tried it so i can't say from experience.

Ahh, i've just read that by aggregating soundcards you will actually loose timecode ability, because the soundcard you will be selecting in preferences won't be traktor certified, so that probably won't be the solution, tried the s4 with timecodes?

This MAY be my solution. But can I route the Audio correctly? Turntables to 2 decks and S4 decks to the others?

A sound card aggregator? Any suggestions for which one? I've just never heard of that before.

I actually believe I am going to run Ableton and Traktor as suggested. I just really want to be able to use the tables for decks 1 & 2 and the S4 for 3 & 4. I will use the X1s and Maschine for live remixing and effects/cues/loops/etc.

Thanks for the advice! Anyone else?

If you have enough power with your computer you could run both traktor and ableton together by internally rerouting inputs and outputs inside the box with a program like soundflower or jack. This will allow multitrack recording of your mixes, vst effects as well as easily letting you use your maschine as well, id keep the audio 10, soundcards are pretty useful peices of kit. There are quite a few different but very fucking respectable setups you could have with all your different gear, i would experiment and see what you like the most.

A soundcard Aggregator might help you do what you want to do with your s4 as it will make multiple soundcards appear as one soundcard to your computer.
