TP2 + Kontrol S4 + Ableton Live 8

Hi and Merry Christmas to everyone!!!! So i had some free time today and decided to try for one last time to route my S4 into Ableton in order to use all the cool effects it has, and i finally did it!!! it was so damn easy that i actually got angry for not figuring out before.

So in order to do it you have to get Soundflower for mac (free) and some time in order to set it up (about 10 min).

1. Install SoundFlower
2. Use it in 16ch in/16ch out mode.
3. Go into Traktor Pro 2 preference and pick Soundflower as your audio device.
4. Go to Output routing and select external mixing mode. Then route Decks A,B,C,D to 1-2,3-4,5-6,7-8. (remember that because you are in external mixing mode you will loose your channel faders)

Now Ableton
1.Go to Live preferences
2.Go to audio and select SoundFlower as your audio INPUT device. And select TRAKTOR S4 as your OUTPUT Device.
3.Go to Session View and duplicate 4 audio tracks (rename it Deck A,B,C,D).
4.On each Channel in the Audio From choose 1-2 for deck A, 3-4 for deck B, 5-6 for deck C and 7-8 for deck D also select it as IN.
5. In order to be able to CUE with your headphones go to the master channel and in the MASTER OUT select 1-2 and on the CUE OUT select 3-4.

And that's it!!!!!!!!!! Now i can use Ableton effects (love my dummy clips) with Traktor!!! And i still can use my Ipad 2 with the Ifigther mapping! What i personally do to control the channel faders is hook up my APC 40 which i also use to trigger dummy clips and instant effects.

If anyone want some help setting this up fell free to PM.

Cheers.....

def a lot simpler to use than jack too - nothing really to even setup... not sure i fancy messing around with the clock offset while about to play a gig (assuming i go back to playing out sometime and with this setup)

if u could midimap the clock adjustments i wouldn't mind tho - could then tweak on the fly. not sure i have the option to "nudge" in my old copy of live5 so may well upgrade it soon - cheaper than i had thought anyway.

@JDFS can you share how you can use the same controller with both tp and ableton?????
i'll chip in for him... normally u can only use one midi controller port with one app (in fact that's still the case) unless u use middleware sofware like my midimasher *but* with the S4 u can use hid mode with traktor and then midi mode with ableton

are u using midi sync too for effects like delay's etc in ableton? i had a play today and it didn't seem awesome with ableton synched to traktor but not too bad the other way round. if i'm doing more in traktor tho track wise i guess it would be nicer to have ableton sync to the clock in traktor. each time i start it up it seems a bit hit and miss with the clock offset i have to set. i am using an old version of live tho - may well pay for the upgrade...

i used soundflower too for routing the audio - was stupidly simple to do - easier than i had expected anyway

How about if you use audio units like Massive. Can you use those types of effects too? (even thought its not really an effect more like an instrument)

And for the lose of the channel faders; just map the S4's channel faders (MIDI Mode) to the Deck A, B, C and D faders in Ableton where the max. setting is 0 dB. I've mapped my X1 to Ableton and Traktor simultaneously, using Jack OS X for the routing.

As long as the host (in your case massive) has audio routing you can!!!!!!!!!

HMMM, ok that was the conclusion I was getting. Using the channel faders in Ableton would take away from my djing, I guess I stuck at this point till I either get my hands on my old mixer or when NI updates Traktor with the option to route each channel independently in internal mixing mode. Thanks.

@deejaysoul Hi, you are going to loose the channel faders with my method!!!! You will need to use Ableton channel faders!!!!
Caitlyn Scarantino

but it when I switch to internal mixing mode, the output drops to Monitor and Master and not the options not the same option as if I was set to external mix. And when I switch to External mix, I lose the Faders of Traktor. Maybe you can screens shots of what youre doing to get it working.
I have only been able to do this when I had my Zero4 mixer and routing the sound of Traktor via the Audio8 and Ableton using the Zero4 for it sound card.

I still do the EQ, Filter and Gain on my S4 (you can do it even if you are using external mode) that way i leave all the knobs of the APC 40 for controlling effects and VST on Ableton. You can also use all the Traktor effects, looping etc... That's what make this setup so good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I see that you have the Launchpad and the nanokontrol you can really build an amazing setup with the gear you have (using the launchpad for dummy clips and the knobs on the nanokontrol for tweaking effects)

Have you assigned the mixer section on the cross fader to control eq's and such in ableton? I was under the impression that if you moved the faders itd still work in tp2 so the volume would still change? (I hope that makes sense!).
Kandi Odom
03.01.2012
@deejaysoul well my purpose of this setup was actually to use the effects and vst on Ableton with a controller in my case the APC 40, but you can try and map the channel faders to any controller (like the x1 you have) or try mapping it to your keyboard. Believe me it is an amazing way to play live you get the best of both worlds. Also youi have the Audio 8 so you can use the S4 in internal mixer mode and just route each channel to ableton.

This is awesome, but how are you controlling the levels using the S4? There's no easy option for mapping the S4 to Ableton. I would like to do this myself, but mostly for recording my sets with each deck in to independent channel for later editing in Ableton.
