Kontrol S2 W/ Pioneer DJM Mixer
Posted on: 21.03.2012 by Roxana Poulsen
I've tried to find a thread related to this but instead ended up confusing myself with situations that sound similar to this but aren't.

If I wanted to use my S2 (instead of CDJs) with an external mixer such as a DJM-850 would I need to purchase an additional soundcard (Traktor Audio X, etc.) to make this work?

Appreciate any responses.

if i have the s2 and a djm850, running the s2 on 2 of the mixers channels, can i add a cdj to one of the other free channels and mix with cd's or usb into my mix while still running both s2 decks and traktor on the other channels?
i know its a "shouldve got an s4 instead" situation, but its more out of curiosity than anything else at this point lol
Yes you can

If you want to mix externally buy CDJ's or TT's. You have a compact, all in one solution already, with no need to blow 1700 bucks for no reason.
You're absolutely right, and I already even own 1200s. But I am only interested in the djm 850 or 900 but didn't want to spend that cash just to learn and hone mixing skills. Once I saw the s2 for sale I decided to jump on it, plus the size makes it convenient to practice in between travels.

But I now realize when I'm ready for the DJM, to get one that's traktor certified, hook it with my 1200s, and keep the s2 on the side for portability or even sell it. I already miss my 1200s, and the effect quality on the DJMs are seriously beautiful. The only reason I didnt initially just save for a DJM was not knowing how much I would really enjoy mixing and wasting $1500-$2k, as I only used my tables to scratch.

I really want a DJM850 or 900 but didn't want to spend all that $$$ just to learn mixing, so I bought the s2 cause it was only $399.

Instead I'm going to keep going at it with the s2, practice mixing (not just using sync) for a good 6 months or so....

Sell the s2 OR just keep it for its portability.....buy a new DJM that's Traktor ready and just use that with my 1200s.....I've been around the DJM's and the quality of the sound and effects sound way too superior than these controllers....but I don't want to buy it until I'm sure it's worth my $$$ and time...

OK. What I don't quite get is why you got the S2 instead of the S4.

With the S4 you can use your SL1200's with control vinyl to control decks C and D.
That way you get the feel of the SL1200's but you'll always have the control of the S4, which you can get accustomed to, really fast and really well so you can basically play totally wasted with your S4, eyes closed and everything, and still rock a set.

The scenario you're currently in requires an external mixer for the SL1200's which is gonna run you at least another $800, just for home use.

My advice is that you sell/return the S2 and get a S4 for maximum enjoyment.

i use a djm900 with s2 for transport control.. i used to use 2 kontrol x1 but i prefer to have platters

now that the djm850 is out.. it's logically the best choice for this setup.. you do not need the link and quantize functions on the 900 because they only work with CDJs..

the 850 has the same 4/4 soundcard as the 900.. better effects in my opinion.. and cheaper..

why use a djm when s2/s4 has built in mixer? because the effects on the pioneer mixers are world class and there is NO WAY traktor's effects even comes close to what the sound quality and effects of a djm 850/900/2000 can put out..

i love traktor and it has great effects but they still have a ways to go to catch up with the new effects pioneer put on their new generation mixers.. start with noise for example.. you listening NI?

Also keep in mind that if all you really want are Traktors effects, you can run them in Send-Return mode via the S/R loop on the DJM.

I made it clear 850 or 900. I was only correcting your incorrect response when the original poster asked specifically about the 850....just sayin

lol i had the 900 it is nice mix but i had to downsize so I use the s4 with 1200s and all is sweet

But i guess running all of these simultaneously would be pointless if a DJM is being used for either an S2 or 2 1200s huh?

Either way the s2 was a good platform to learn mixing on....

I did nothing but skratch on my Vestax 05...

Oh and thebasementwonder, the reason the DJM appeals to me is because there is just no way the effects the DJM have can be replicated by the s2 or s4. The slip roll alone sounds like nothing my s2 can do. And the quality of the effects sound completely superior.

If there is a way please chime in...

I didn't buy the DJM initially because there was no way I would fork out that much cash just to learn how to mix. But as the mixing is growing on me I can definately see myself wanting to purchase a DJM 900 in the not-so-distant future.

Will thats if if you have the traktor certified pioneer mixer. But my 2 cents whats the piont of having the extera gear. I would jus trade the pioneer and s2 and jus get the s4 and u have a mixer with traktor and all the efxs u need with in traktor
jus my 2 cents

I actually have 1200s as well. But for me to use them with my s2 I would definately need to buy the Audio 8 or 6 or something right...?

But at this point I'm more interested in using a DJM along with the S2 I recently bought or even the DJM with the 1200s...I'm cravin' those effects...

If u have got the s4 and had cdjs or 1200s then u could of connected them to the s4 and use them and the platters to mix. i se 1200s with my s4 to keep my hands verstile.

Thanks for the response.

That's pretty legit, I see no reason to buy CDJs.....
