Traktor Can't Play Two Decks at Once, Sound is muddy
Posted on: 26.02.2013 by Gaynell Rydberg
Issue...

I just got Traktor set up on my laptop. I'm using a NI Audio 2.

So when I play a song on just 1 deck, the song is already sounding slowed down (tempo shift 0%) and the sound is muddy and distorted. The Audio 2 works fine since I can use it without issue on my desktop.

When I play two decks, then both songs half in speed! Any clue what's wrong?

My laptop is an ASUS Zenbook Prime (i5, 4GB memory) with music being played off a class 10 SD card.

Well Karlos if he had a Mac that might work for him hehe..

I run 32 samples, with the non beta drivers, USB 3 off in Bios with absolutely no issues on two laptops (Though they are the same specs, Asus Custom Builds)

Im assuming the Ac Adapter for it is optional extra purchase unlike the Audio 10? I believe thats going to be your best bet.

Also someone suggested you try running your tracks off of the HDD.. Perhaps there is some bottleneck with your SD Card. (THough on a side note, Im not to sure this would make a difference, traktor is loading these tracks into memory, so after the initial read there shouldnt be much of an issue)

Also you said you use this machine for other things before you started DJing?

Use that, see if there are any issues that might be destroying some latency issues with your card. And set your CPU Priority to Background services to see if that helps at all

As far as the USB 3 problem, it was prevailent in all NI products, except they decided to give Apple users the first fix.. and then a year later, give Windows users a beta driver

To solve my USB 3 issue I did the same which is disable it in the bios, uninstall the drivers, and use legacy mode in bios. This stopped the pops and clicks, but I really believe like someone else has said your issue is due to Power supply.

I run a k2, Traktor Audio 10 and a Maschine off the same Laptop, but its kind of a beast. So not sure if that makes a difference with power supplied through USB (youd believe it would be constant across all hardware for standards)

BTW ALL of my USB Ports are USB 3.0 I dont believe its the protocol thats giving you issues.. There needs to be something else.
Nah man, I hate macs. They're ridiculously overpriced :P But that's a whole other mess.

I have my Denon MC3000 coming in Monday, so I should be able to figure out whether it was the driver or it's my laptop. If it still happens, I dunno since the MC3000 is AC powered, not bus powered.

No one's ever gonna convince me to go to Macs lol.

It's not the HDD since I put one song on my SSD, and it didn't have an effect. I'll try that out though

Slvr, if you're still having problems, I noticed yesterday that NI have released 3.1.0 Beta drivers which are supposed to improve USB 3.0 support. Worth a go?

Ahhh. I believe it's just NI's crappy drivers...

I'll be getting a Denon MC3000 soon so hopefully it'll work out.

Yeah its the mid 2012 with usb 3.0, ever since its been working flawlessly tho. Using K2's as sound cards too btw!

I had a similar problem when I started playing my decks through my mixer externally. I ended up completely shutting down traktor pro, unplugging both sound cards and that seemed to do the trick. Hasn't happened to me ever since, I'm on a mbp too btw.

No probs, I can't really be of any further help as I've got no idea about powered hubs or XHCI
Gaynell Rydberg
26.02.2013
Hmm. Well it seems like it may be an issue of power supplied to the USB port.

I wonder if I could get a powered hub and attach it to my laptop and fix anything?

I've already uninstalled XHCI which got the card working in the first place.

Thanks for the help.

I believe mileage may vary, in my case, it would BSOD my whole computer.
There are some fixes in some of the links I posted in that thread from the NI community s, might wanna try them, including older drivers. Good luck! You really don't want to have to put up with latency that high!
Gaynell Rydberg
26.02.2013
Yup! I remember that.

Sadly I've had this laptop before I even though of becoming a DJ :P

I figured the USB 3.0 was work or no worky, didn't believe latency would be an issue.

USB 3.0 is exactly the reason why...let me find you another thread where we talked about this exact same thing!

Only have two USB 3.0 ports. I wonder if hte USB 3.0 is the reason why.

Realistically though... a latency of 30.1 ms won't make that big of a difference will it?

I have to have 1024 samples if I want two decks to play at once. 1 deck will work with 512 samples.

44.1/1024/1 for 2 decks
44.1/512/1 for 1 deck
Yu Santellano
26.02.2013
Ouch! That is kinda high...I was doing some research for you and found this:
http://www.native-instruments.com/fo...d.php?t=138386

What settings were you on before? I find 44.1/256/1ms works fine for me.
Yu Santellano

You tried all the standard unplugs/replugs/reboots/reinstall kinda stuff?
Maybe try putting your audio 2 in another USB port, they can have issues with some USB port versions.
Gaynell Rydberg
26.02.2013
Fixed it!
Had to increase my process buffer, but the output latency is kinda ridiculous..

I'm at 1024 samples w/ 4 USB latency.
Output latency is 30.1 ms... kinda high.
Gaynell Rydberg
26.02.2013
Latence is about 5ms I believe. USB latency is 1 ms.

CPU load is barely even moving. If I had to guess, it doesn't go above 10%.

I'm playing a song from my SSD and it still lags.
Yu Santellano

1. Make all your audio is set up correctly; drivers installed, input/output, sample rate and latency.

2. 1 is just a precautionary measure, but I'd believe the more likely problem may well be CPU load, have you been keeping an eye on it?

3. Also, as you're playing music off of an SD card, I'm starting to wonder if that might be the problem, as you're playing it from the card rather than Traktor's collection, it's trying to analyze and play two sets of songs as it's going along, and simply can't cope. Try playing a few songs direct from your hard drive/traktor collection.
