Traktor 2.6 completely crashes my desktop when starting up

Custom built PC w
AMD 2 245 2.90 ghz
8 GB RAM

(previously) VCI-100, Kore 2 controller and Audio Kontrol 1 were connected while using Traktor

Hey everyone

So I've had previous versions of Traktor LE and one licensed version on this computer in the last few years that I've had it. Always worked just fine.

I just bought a Kontrol S2 which is on the way, and to get things ready, I downloaded the demo version of 2.6. The system drive was completely cleared of any previous Traktor files as far as I know. When I open the program from the shortcut, the working icon comes up for a few seconds, traktor shows up in task manager using about 245 MB of memory, but shortly after, about 12-15 seconds the entire system freezes. No Traktor splash screen. Task manager is frozen...no mouse response, no key response when using restart or end commands. I have to restart the computer manually to regain function. I can circumvent the entire system freeze by closing the task tree for Traktor before the 12 second time limit, but I cannot get Traktor to run at all. There are also no crashlogs in the folder, so it's like the program isnt doing anything at all besides opening a shell in memory.

I booted the computer in safe mode and magically, Traktor starts up just fine into the demo/register screen.

If it's helpful to know at all I used to have a VCI-100 plugged in. The old audio interface was an Audio Kontrol 1 (which I have deleted the drivers for). I also used Kore 2 as a secondary controller through controller editor, but it's not plugged in right now. All registry points for AK1 and previous Traktor versions were deleted.

Ideas are appreciated.

Well I retract my previous statement... Wipe it dude.. Wipe it now. There is no way on earth I would ever purchase something from someone without my own wipe. You'd be amazed at what shaddy people do.

I wouldn't relate it so much to the software if you've uninstalled and reinstalled. The Key isn't going to cause a segmentation fault or core dump of traktor. I say bite the bullet man, get yourself a clean install going on in there. You never know what kind of idiotic things people do.

Unfortunately it could be another piece of hardware as well. Bad sectors on a HDD can cause a freeze and not a dump if they aren't trying to access vital OS systems.

Do you run any other software on this system? Perhaps something more intensive than Traktor that you could try out?
well I somewhat trust the source of the computer since I bought it from my best friend. I didn't have any reason to doubt he had wiped the drive since the desktop started up in the Windows first-time hello screen when I received it. That aside, I also can't be certain that he did fully wipe the drive either. So you're right, it's probably best to err on the side of "he screwed something up"

The only other intensive software I run on this are Ableton and FL Studio, though not very often as of late.

Also Sim City 4. hah.

I'm gonna go ahead and do the fresh Win install. sucks, but it's the only way I can progress in the troubleshooting I believe. It's been hard having a brand new piece of gear sitting up on the desk for so long without being able to use it.

Or hardware that isn't used in safe mode.

I've had an Audio Kontrol 1 and Kore 2 installed on this desktop in the past. The Mobo only has USB 2.0 ports. Traktor crashes regardless of whether I have the S2 plugged in or it's drivers installed. I do remember the Audio Kontrol 1 in particular being fussy about retaining the USB port you originally plugged it into when installing, but I have completely cleaned the registry of all it's drivers and files.

I got a response from the previous owner, who confirmed that this machine did have a Union cracked version of Traktor Pro. I'd believe it would have had to be version 1 though. Supposedly a Win 7 reinstall was done before it was sold to me. The desktop seemed like it was 100% clean, but I wonder if he just did a repair install and maybe there's some keygen root sticking in the registry? I dont know why the problem would only start happening now if that was the case. I do remember having a vaguely similar issue with FL Studio way back after using a patch and then finally going legit with it.

I will check to see if the error dumps are off, as well as the RAM integrity. I dont believe I ever changed the dump settings though. I really appreciate the insight. The responses from you and jprime have been much more helpful than the elementary processes I'm going through on my support ticket.

edit: Error dumps are not turned off AFAIK and the RAM integrity checked out fine.

Is this your first piece of NI gear? Did the motherboard you purchase have USB 3 ports on it? ARe you using the usb3 port?

If your system is freezing there will be no crash report.. Its locking up in an infinite cycle, and would never dump a report anyways.

Its quite possible you turned off error dumps? (saves up HDD space and is part of the "optimization" many suggest, which I do not) If that was the case it would never blue screen on you.

Another possibility is the RAM integrity. I would test it in its entirety at least 2 passes.

I would check Java as well.. Just because a program does not use Java does not mean that Java isnt for some reason reallocating, or traktor is reallocating memory chunks already being used.

You cant say NI are the most intelligent programmers of software or drivers...

The fresh install worked. Traktor is running perfectly now. Finally get to dig into the S2.

Thanks again for the help here. I feel like I should just post on DJTT first and use NI support as a last ditch effort from here on out.

Is your Windows software also up to date? Just checking...

At this point I would consider a complete re install of Windows if I were you. Making sure to complete all Windows updates after re install.

Upgrading the Nvidia video drivers, unplugging all usb devices aside from key/mouse, and shutting down Subsonic and other unnecessary programs unfortunately did not do the trick.

I know the audio driver is for sure. I have not checked the integrated video cards driver though. That's a good idea. I appreciate that. Will do as soon as I get home.

One other thing is that I am running one Java update behind since the newest versions always screw up my Subsonic music streaming app. (More like Subsonic runs a month or two behind in updating their software) I dont know if that has anything to do with Traktor though.

Nothing at all. The crashlog folder is empty. Thats what seemed odd. Traktor appears to start booting.

I've tried installing 2.5 as well, with the same result. After that didnt work I completely cleaned out the registry and all Native Instruments files and brought 2.6 up again.

I sent an email to the friend I bought this system from asking if he'd ever had a cracked version on this computer. There were no folders indicating that, but I'm wondering if the keygens that come with some of those somehow stick in the registry in a place I'm ignorant to?

Still no solution to this issue. I've received the S2 but it's little more than a paperweight at this point. I've got a ticket started with NI customer service, but so far after 3 days of back and forth, we're no further than running the NI support tool.

Any suggestions short of "reformat and reinstall windows"? Something tells me that Traktor itself is the problem.
