The Jog Wheel resolution is probably poor. Similar to the VCI-400 I would assume. That controller pretty much flopped once the word was out that NI's native NHL protocol provides a much better Jog feel. If you only Tempo Bend with the Jogs you should be fine, but if you Juggle/Scratch you'd be better off with S4.

Agreed! Totally depends on what floats your boat and allows your creative juices to flow.

For a lot of guys on this site, they love Traktor because it's extremely customizable/versatile, has incredible effects, easy beatgridding, and works with nifty controllers from NI like the F1 and X1. The S4 can also be used with timecode vinyl, so if you like turntables, it can essentially be used as a mixer - that's cool!

I personally go with Serato because I'm used to the GUI and workflow...maybe I'm too stubborn to learn new things in Traktor, but using ITCH/Scratch is second nature to me so I can focus on what really matters when I DJ - the music!

Get what you know you'll be able to pair with your style the best.

There's probably an easy $300 on the table in price difference so you'd have the money to pick up a F1

S4 + F1 > DDJSX
You would need to upgrade to Scratch pro for timecode to work on S4 and you cant use it without a computer connected only 2 external sources can be connected. No filter in standalone mode. but the questinon was S4 or DDJ SX so I guess the price is the least of his consern.

i am also stuck on this predicament. I first learned on a traktor, so I prefer traktor (plus it has beat jumping! does the ddj? ). I've played with the ddj and it is a fine unit. very professional, and has a lot of features. The only thing that gets me is that it cant beat jump like the s4 can. I dj edm, so when i'm making my mashups/sets its easier to be able to find where i want to mix with the browsing wheels on the s4. With the pioneer I am having to eye everything, and then listen to it to make sure its correct, which takes a lot more time since I'm not exactly sure where I want to begin the mix. I want to love the ddj, but the s4 wins for me because of its ease of use. How do people dj edm with the pioneer? I see how it can be great for hip hop.

The "NHL protocol" doesn't have any benefits over MIDI, it just isn't artificially restricted by NI.

If you plan on scratching through software you are far better off with turntables, CDJs, or Serato controllers.

For scratching none othere then NI S4/S2 are going to be perfect. But other then that the mapping by Viper is perfect for Traktor (Or almost perfect, there are always things you'd like to mapp differant from other people)
You get flux(slip)mode that works as it should. sampler that works well with 4 slots in the remix decks. some midifighter like fx on the slicer pads. If there is anything you don't like in his mapper it's easy to change as it's separated into several mappings

Ill put this way I have always used traktor since 1.06 but in all seriousness if ni could make a controller that didn't feel like it'd fall apart from 3 times a week use in no time I'd likely buy one. I sometimes miss traktors effects an what can be done and snap and quant but.... I feel far more authentic to my vinyl roots when using serato Dj with no quant.

Imagine being able to play guitar or drums and always being able to be in tune and on time without really being there. That's what I equate quant an snap to.

So my honest opinion I have best of both worlds run my ns6 with serato Dj and a numark total control with an x1 custom mappings can do either but use my serato Dj setup more because I enjoy the challenge of dropping a 2 hour set and knowing I have to be on beat in time every mix

I love the ddj-sx more than the s4. The s4 to me feels like a toy. The ddj sx feels like what Im used to playing on at gigs regulary. It also feels like a much more solid unit.

Well said Linus!

I am a traktor user, that wants to try serato. Maybe it is a "the grass is always greener" situation

I also believe that the DDJSX doesn't have good jogwheel control in Traktor.
