Powered USB hubs for connecting an audio interface to an RPi
Powered USB hubs for connecting an audio interface to an RPi Posted on: 18.04.2013 by Kiyoko Wellisch Yo. So my aunt just handed me a Raspberry Pi, naturally the first thing that came into my head was "I gotta get xwax running on this".This means I need to connect a big power hungry USB audio interface to it- and my interface doesn't have a port to connect a power supply to. I figure the only solution is a powered USB hub, something I know nothing about. Can anyone offer me some tips or recommend me a powered USB hub that would be suitable for use with an audio interface? Cheers guys! Louis | |

Kiyoko Wellisch 18.04.2013 | The Pi's is powered by a 5V microUSB, consumes 3.5W (model B that is) and it's USB ports reportedly won't work with devices with a demand over 100 mA. edit: So basically it's way under spec. |
Alphonso Deitchman 18.04.2013 | My Audio 4 works fine through a non-powered hub on my PC, does the Pi have a low powered (below spec?) USB port or something? |
Kiyoko Wellisch 18.04.2013 | Yerp. Really quite want to get a DJM750 but sadly it's broken with Linux and ALSA at the moment. Hopefully those clever Mixxx/xwax/ALSA chaps will get it working soon though. edit: The audio interface is broken that is. The midi is class compliant and thus works flawlessly. |
Alphonso Deitchman 18.04.2013 | Get it from Amazon and you can blame them instead What interface are you using btw? Looks like an Audio 4 in your setup thread? |
Kiyoko Wellisch 18.04.2013 | If this goes badly I'm blaming you |
Alphonso Deitchman 18.04.2013 | Any hub should work, but as with anything it's best to buy something proven with good reviews. |
Kiyoko Wellisch 18.04.2013 | So will any old powered hub probably be ok then? |
Alphonso Deitchman 18.04.2013 | Should be fine if every device connected is 2.0 or newer. |
Kiyoko Wellisch 18.04.2013 | Not an issue for USB2.0/3.0 then? |
Alphonso Deitchman 18.04.2013 | I believe the main advantage is that any USB 1.0/1.1 devices will usually bottleneck a typical single-TT hub, whereas the multi-TT hub does not get bottlenecked. |
Kiyoko Wellisch 18.04.2013 | See this is something I need to know- what exactly does multi-TT mean and what impact does this have? |
Alphonso Deitchman 18.04.2013 | Saw this one get mentioned a lot in the last thread on hubs: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DUB-H.../dp/B0002AFZVM The MM-1 does have the advantage of being multi-TT though. |
Kellie Myrum 18.04.2013 | Yeah I know, was kidding a lil. BTW it seems they already start to sheep them. |
Kiyoko Wellisch 18.04.2013 | Bit wasteful and I'm not planning to wait that long for it :P |
Kellie Myrum 18.04.2013 | Cmd-mm1 |
