DJ Traktor Laptop 13inch vs 15inch
Posted on: 19.04.2013 by Rodger Seferovic
I'm in the market for a used laptop for DJing. There are far more 13inch laptops available vs 15 inch ones. I plan to use the laptop with the Remix decks which means I will almost always have a 3rd deck running at full size. Will the 15 inch screen real estate make that much of a difference? Weight isn't an issue to me.

+1. All the advantages of Mac OS, half the weight of the MBP, better screen resolution, and a super fast SSD.

That's PERFECT. Just need to wait for the price to come down a bit,

This is also a good point.

Yes, MBA is pretty good for DJ-ing especially if you have a larger drive to store all your music.

Most software today has an extended library view so screen resolution should not be that big of a deal. You can fit 4 decks in a 800p pretty comfortably.

i use to run a 17" mbp.... that shit was an anchor and now im running a 13" mbp the screen size doesn't really bother me. most of the time its the height of the laptop stand and the height of the table your using that makes u lean and squint. I don't stare at my laptop when i spin. if you play out alot the 13" is lighter and more portable.

Most cheap 13" laptops (and even 15") are 1366x768. You definitely want a better resolution than that.

I originally used a 15 inch MBP with 2 decks + sample decks. Recently I haven't had a 15 inch and have been using a 13 inch asus which was ok for 2 decks. Once I got the F1 I had to keep switching the sizes of the 4 decks. Not sure if 15 inch would make a big difference.

4 decks on 1440x900 for reference:

Seems fine to me?

All you'd get from 1080p is a smaller UI and a few more tracks visible in the browser box.

I have 17" 1080p HP Envy listed in the Marketplace if you're interest.

1080p makes a huge diff.

I comfortably mix using a 13" 1080p Asus screen, but I only use 2 decks. 4 decks is really pushing it.

Seems pretty cheap IMO for an 18 inch tablet. A laptop of that size will cost about the same.

Depends. One thing I would consider is eye strain - will it be close enough for you to see what's going on without leaning forward or squinting at the laptop? If it's further away, you might have to increase the font size in Traktor. Maybe invest in a stand to bring it closer as well.

If you play in a crowded DJ booth or small practice space, a 13 inch laptop might be better, but you'd have to weigh that with the above.

You won't have much browser space available below the remix decks in Traktor either way, but I doubt that'll make a difference since you probably be toggling browser mode anyway.

1440x900 is more than enough for 4 decks on my 13" laptop.
