Making your own audio cables - any interest?
Posted on: 21.04.2013 by Margaretta Hebenstreit
Hi all
I started making my own audio cables some time ago since my old ones started falling apart.
So my question is, is anyone interested in making their own audio cables as well?
If there are enough people that are interested i would take some time and post a step by step guide with pictures with some additional information, like what pieces to use best, what tools you need etc.

so basically, is anyone interested in seeing such a thread here?

We'll be having several setups in the same room so speakers of course aren't a great idea and there won't be too much ambient noise (like you'd get in a club) so headphone levels won't be too high either.

oh so you guys are two performers performing together? Like Daft Punk?
That's why you need two sets of headphones?

as a teaching tool?

Plus it will strain a headphone amp. Two pairs of headphones plugged into the same jack will half the impedance at the output stage. At high sound levels you can burn out the headphone amp in the mixer.

Sorry. I just have never see that before.

Should come in handy for lessons next week; I've got another yet to be resoldered too now that I believe of it.

What do you use that cable for?

Are the two female ends mono? or stereo?

Are you using two headphones??? An extra output? Why not use the booth out?

I am confused here lol

Always curious to see how people do their cables. It's like watching someone else dj, I know how to do it, but there's often something new to pick up on and try.
Curious to see how you do yours before I go and make cables for decks C/D to get rid of the mess

My recipe for Vestax TTs => mixer (or NI multicores) and mixer => extra A8 inputs for recording was :
*Neutrik NYS 373-0 plugs, black and red
167469.jpg
*Sommer cable SC ONYX 2025 MKII which you could actually use to redo technics cabling, it seems like it fits the cable clamp under the tonearm.

Note : those particular Neutriks fit tightly ... but don't get all the way into the Audio 8's semi-recessed RCA plugs. They get in enough that it is not a problem in any noticeable way though!

Note 2 : I measured the length to include a couple inches of extra play from TT to mixer to keep things neat.
However, since my A8 is a little to the side of the mixer, I finally decided to add a few extra inches on top of that so I can still plug directly into the interface. Always keep a little more room than you'd believe so you can move stuff around a bit - a prior tutorial here showed cables that were just the right length, that might be overdoing it a little !

I make most of my cables. I made a 4 pair 3 foot snake of rcas for my audio 8 to my mixer. IMG_0013.jpg

Soldering iron is the most important tool! What kind of cables were you believeing of building?
I already exchanged all my rca cables and also did some rca to 1/4' jack for the send/rtrn inputs of my xone 92. also going to do some jack to xlr for my monitors. I guess the interest is there so i will post a guide later next week

Check these out:

http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...wn-cables.html

I believe this was posted as a response to a question regarding cables that someone asked a while back. Great resource and breaks down the individual parts that you may need for making your own cables.

I followed it a while back and made some basic RCA cables as practice and they turned out great. Planning on purchasing high end parts to make another pair soon.

This was actually an article that DJTT posted a while back. Great video showing the entire process.

Hope these help!

They're neutrik rcas you can find cheaper but these have a very nice build quality.

Which RCA plugs are these?
I have been wanting to make my own cables for quite some time, but haven't found proper plugs yet.

Here's the 90 degree plug:

And the original splitter:

Got a snakes nest of wires myself; there's always a specific adapter you're missing so I make do with sticking 3 or 4 together sometimes.

where did you get the components from makar1.

That cable is exactly what I am looking for. I need different jacks but I do need some 90' degree 1/4 jacks as well.

Struggling to find such a neat and tidy solution for my studio mixer. Hotch-potch of adapters is annoying.
