Speaker dock / ultra portable speaker system.
Posted on: 07.05.2013 by Doug Bieling
Hi all,

I'm after a new speaker dock for my phone and tablet. Hopefully bluetooth but doesnt have to be. Most important is that its compact but gives a real kick.

I did have a Klipsche iGroove HG but its a but rubbish now as its the old 30 pin adapter with the OOOLLDD switched cables so that it doesn't charge anything any more.

Can anyone recommend a more upto date dock that kicks out a real decent sound but isn't too heavy or big.

Many thanks all

they are almost equal except the BOSE has better bass. That makes the BOSE edge out the JAMBOX.

Well i never heard it personally, but judging by the dimensions of the drivers, you're looking at approx. the same volume with the 2 units. Also, the klipsch will probably give a little more weight in the bass department, since it's ported and doesn't use passive rads as the 715i does, but the 715i will be tighter sounding.

If you're looking for sheer power without a battery then i'd really go with something by soundfreaq..

I believe I'll keep my eyes peeled for one of them logitechs. Does it kick out a decent amount of low ends for its size?
It's not as powerful as the bose when in battery mode, when connected it kicks out a fair amount of bass, thing is, it's bloody defined and balanced for such a small device.. The highs are smooth and pretty darn separated (real silk dome tweeters vs paper cone fullrange drivers in the bose). I tell ya, i was pretty disappointed with the battery on the thing, but the sound quality trumps it all.

If you want bass i'd suggest to look at the monster beatbox portable. That thing kicks some serious butt in the bass department.

The logi has an advertised battery life of 7 hours, truth is you can pump it full volume for about 45mins and then it automatically trims the volume to a pretty low level, so that's not great.
However, when it's connected to the mains, this thing kicks!

doesn't make sense? my 6 watt speaker eats 6 AA's in 2 hours.

I am very happy with my Jawbone Jambox which i have already over a year.
Great portability when i want to play Dj on my hotel room when traveling for work.

Possibly. Bear in mind though that the B&W does cost more than either the Bose or the Jawbone linked above. But it is just leagues ahead of either of them in terms of sound quality.

I believe they sell them in Apple Stores, and high end HiFi stores, so it should be possible to demo one first. You will be blown away at what they can do.

I sure am. Will check that one out. I believe I have been spoilt by the Klipsch. It's such a loud piece of kit for the price.

B&W Zepplin. It really is THE best. Ok, not the cheapest, but it will kick the ass off the Bose and Jawbone without breaking a sweat.

I'm guessing your in UK since you said 60 quid?

Just in case anyone is interested. The Altec Lansing dock arrived today. Gone straight back in the box to go back! Horrible sound.

Cant believe it gets such good reviews. It vibrates and rattles and is far too boomy. You can tweak it so it sounds ok, but only whilst close to it. Its no match for the big sound that comes out of the Klipsche iGroove HG.

Back to the drawing board.

I've ended up ordering an Altac Lansing Octiv 650 based on some great reviews and the fact it can be picked up so cheap. I've also ordered a bluetooth receiver to go with it so I can use my android phone and tablet with it.

If it's rubbish I'll send it back and try a more expensive unit but for 60 quid and the reviews it gets I couldn't not at least try it.
