Oh it is still about - just this last weekend there was a fantastic Gig with Chris Coco, Nancy Noise and Justin Robertson playing full Balearic sets. In the UK there are regular gigs in this style and its one where I feel most comfortable as its my background too

You find a real mixture of House styles in the Deep House section of Beatport, etc, and I like that. It probably should just be called House. You get Garagey sounding tracks and all sorts. I believe a lot of Nu Disco sounds like House to me, lol. I don't actually browse the House section on Beatport since much of it seems to be cheesey shit that I wouldn't call House music.

Great post.

Look at DJ's like Doorly. He plays literally all kinds of music in every set that he does. I remember seeing him live before he hit the big time and was just blown away; because of how he uses so many different genres and ties it all together so perfectly he has definitely become someone who I would say is one of my major influences.

maybe its just the way things are proposed to us?

I'm over genres...they don't stick around long enough anymore to even build up a decent music collection. To a certain extent its all just a recombination of previous sounds or sounds normally heard at a certain BPM and then they are used at a slower/faster BPM than traditionally.

Does anyone just use words like deep to describe a sound rather than label it?
Annalisa Shogren

http://www.mixmag.net/music/the-blog...-it-deep-house

Can't you just listen to it and fucking enjoy it?

Not being funny, but people know what they're told nowadays. Listen to, for example a Dusky or George Fitzgerald tune, and you HAVE to call it deep house, because no one else knows otherwise.

Stop being such chin stroking bell ends and vibe off it. Who cares what the genre is... "Do you like deep house?" "Well that depends... Do you mean like..."

It's just unnecessary confusion, and chances are, people are going to know what is considered to be deep house NOW rather than what it WAS.

^ Naw, we have to class music like this so the punters know what to buy at the music store after seeing avicii.
I have this argument with a buddy of mine all the time about rock music. I consider most lofi garage style diy rock punk, he says it's all rock, and to a point, he's right. Deep, tech, electro, it's all house. If its got that simple 4 on the floor house groove, it's probably house, and if it isn't, call it house anyways.

My problem is when I want to find some grimey electro house, I don't want to have to dig through terrible Dutch house to find it.

Genres definitely have a purpose but when one starts to believe in such rigid terms, then creativity does suffer. I believe genres help beginners learn the elements of tracks. If we're talking dub step: heavy bass, 70/140BPM, heavy leads etc. It should be used as a guide for beginner producers but once you're comfortable with the elements then you can decide to believe for yourself and believe outside the box. If someone had said dutch house must always be 128 BPM, never 110 BPM, we would never have moombahton.

I have got somewhat vexed with the hijacking of genre names. First it was electro, and now deep house.

I get why it's called deep. For me the differentiation I make is that original deep house stirred definite emotions. This is my favourite original deep house tune:

Deep house these days just seems to be about how it sounds rather than how it makes you feel. And most of it today makes me feel like I'm in a bar rather than wanting to raise my hands in the air and lose myself.

yes we do categorize things. and its good in a way, helps us find things easier, but sometimes its really easy to get tunnel vision (musically). Thats why i really try not to listen to individual tracks. I'm really into only listening to mixes, and picking a track i like out of the mix. Because you might like a track, and come to find out its actually "tech house" meanwhile you have been wadding through crates of "deep House" stuff and you probably would have never found that gem. Incidentally I listened to this mix 5 times in a row yesterday, and if your a fan of this type of music (who cares what genre it is)....well just listen to the mix all the way through, and you will figure out why

i can see it now. Since the NU DICSO sound is going around, and Daft Punk did their release,
all these websites are going to start posting a "WE HAVE A NEW GENRE of songs for download!"
(beaport, zipdj, etc)
and the music will be Nu Disco............ is this something new or are they just jumping on a bandwagon of sorts where
this genre existed for quite a while now, but these websites never pushed it because they were scared it wouldn't "sell"

Oh wait i have an idea, let me put blonde dreds in my hair, and shave one side of it
then ill call myself Brit-llex and my genre of music is pop-step.

Its a perfect idea i believe

this way i get all the Britany spears followers and those who wont let go of Skrillex

lol

It's perfectly ok to mix different genres, that's what most new producers do anyway. However, it's retarded to call that deep house when it barely has anything to do with it. There are tonnes of genres closer to the popular sound right now.
