No House/Hip-Hop DJ's?
Posted on: 13.09.2013 by Giselle Giffels
Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places, but a lot of the house artists that I follow only spin that; House. Are there any DJ's out there that drop some like, Mac Miller - I Am Who Am (Killin' Time) [Ft. Niki Randa] with some House?

I just can't seem to find anyone that plays out, at raves/festivals, open format. I mean tracks like Black Skinhead from YEEZUS HIMSELF would absolutely rile dance floors!

A-Trak?

The way the touring scene works at the moment is what causes this.

Producers are booked to DJ. Audiences expect a producer to play the sound they produce. Producer doesn't want to alienate the people who've paid to see them so plays it safe. And so it goes.

I stretch acapellas to fit house tempos all the time! I rarely try to mix a hip hop track directly into a house set, but vocals can be manipulated with ease.

I only play open format gigs (mix of Hip-hop, basic pop, house, reggae, a little reggaeton).

On the mainstream radion stations in Miami, the majority of the DJ's are all open format. There's also tons of talented open format guys on the Serato Forum. I'd check the line of DJ's for: Heavy Hitters, Skam Artists, also Mr. Mauricio (HH), Joe Maz (DiscoTech), Konflikt, DJ Irie, Jessica Who, DJ Vice, and many of the guys doing remixes on Crooklyn Clan are also talented open format DJ's, Danny Diggz, 914 Hitsquad, Mister Gray.

I am a house DJ and get booked for just that. Mostly deep / tech / prog these days. That being said, when I am at home or with friends, I predominantly play hip hop and open format. After 6 years of playing house, I seem to be on a turntablism kick just for the fun of switching it up.

I drop loops/samples of 'Dead Prez - Hip Hop' / 'Kool & The Gang' and the like over (tech/minimal) house. But I do play predominantly house music.

I was discussing this with my mate at Bestival, while we were watching Danny Byrd (Hospitality Take Over @ The Port!). He was dropping all sorts left right and centre. Was awesome! BUT, I said to my mate.... "Imagine if this was a house DJ, he'd get boo'd off stage!".
