How to use Maschine Step Sequencer while its a plugin inside Ableton
Posted on: 13.08.2013 by Temple Cervelli
Hey.

I've just managed to get ableton and my Xone92 linked together. I've mapped my Kontrol X1 to control the parameters of a plugin that i have in Ableton, (Lexicon PSP 42 delay plugin). And I've managed to get the plugin to effect sounds that I trigger on Maschine, and the sound comes out from a Return/Mic channel on my mixer. I have Traktor and my Audio 10 all linked up too.

I got Maschine plugin in Ableton open all okay, but i just want to run Maschine in step sequencer mode.. But when i press step and then play, nothing happens? Can anyone shed any light? thanks.

Okay, I've followed everything properly in this video, but when i press play on Traktor decks, no sounds comes out, BUT, I can see feedback on each Ableton audio track decks volume display, but theres no sound.... It's only when i turn up the 'send' on each deck that sound comes out, not good quality tho, and plus the sound comes from my mic/return channel on my Xone29... I cant get no feedback or sound through any of my 4 channels on my mixer. What have i done wrong?

I have a feeling that from doing my Traktor Audio 10 main in and main out to the return/mic channel of my xone92 has something to do with why this isnt working, as the sound from each deck comes out of this return/mic channel of my xone92, but as i said, only when i turn the send up on each audio track in abelton. Plus, in the tut video, Endo didnt have any of the sends turnt up himself, so. Eh :-(
Superfreak - I have been reading up on your projects to integrate Maschine step sequencer into your Traktor workflow hosted inside of Ableton and also run the PSP42 .vst, which is effectively a mirror of what Hawtin & Dubfire are doing. I am curious to know if you ever got it fully operational given your choice of Mixer & Audio Interface which i believe is NI Audio 10. Also curious if you got the control of the effect working with the X1 which you are also presumably using to control track decks inside Traktor. I'm endeavoring to do a similar setup and curious to know how far you got.

I meant; I have got Traktor and Ableton syncd together so that now, Maschines step-sequence is synced up to Traktors beats, as well as getting the plugin working over maschine as well.

So, what I need to do now, is apply my plugins in Ableton over music that I'm playing in Traktor This is something I mainly wanted to do, evne tho im very happy now that ive got it working with maschine, i just want to be able to add my delay plugin over a track that is in ableton!

I've got an Allen and Heath Xone 92, Traktor Audio 10, and have Aux 1 and Return 1 going to the main IN and main OUT of my Audio 10. I've heard that i wont be able to achieve what i want with only an audio 10, as richie hawtin and chris liebing use a different soundcard.

Do you know much about this? Even if I can only apply plugins over ONE traktor deck, say just Deck A for example, ill be happy with that until i can afford a soundcard with more i/o. I believe I just need to make an audio track in ableton and then route/set the ins/outs to something and connect the 2nd aux and return channel to the audio 10, but i really dont know exactly what i have to do.

Hope you can help!
What you want to do is possible. Like the poster above me said, could be done with a second sound card. I did this option for a bit, but really felt there was a loss in audio quality. I went back to just using the effects onboard Traktor, as the bennefits did not out weigh the loss in audio I felt. Interesting to learn of another way to do this.

Again, I just use two sound cards. I don't have a latency issue, really.

One you have your tracks routed into audio tracks in ableton, drag the VSTs from the browser onto those tracks.

How to i make the tracks tho? I don't know how to route my traktor decks into ableton

Just put your VSTs on your tracks.

Why don't you route it internally (for free), again?

I have to make do with my audio 10, as its all i have atm. Can't afford to buy any new gear .... on that thought, wait... i do have Traktor soundcard from an old version of Traktor scratch duo... maybe an audio 2 or 4. I could hook that up?

But overall, i would like to just use my audio 10. How did you do this with 1 soundcard mate? @LanceBlaise - and are you able to apply plugins form ableton over all 4 decks?

Ah, that image is too small, i can't see anything on it, just blurry. This happens with photo attachments on this community a lot. could u email it to me please? [email protected]

Thanks a lot mate. And how exactly do I route my tracks into audio tracks in ableton? Or does that image show how?

Yes! Absolutely. I wish people would ask more performance or at least music-related questions rather than just technical stuff.

I am currently working on a tutorial series for Maschine Masters that answers your very question.

What kind of music do you play? This matters a lot.

In terms of just sequencer stuff:

There's live step sequencing, which is exactly what it sounds like, while mixing out of a track or between grooves / tracks on Maschine. If you're playing really minimal stuff or most kinds of techno, this works very well.

You could also change the sequence as it repeats, by adding and then removing parts of the pattern (such that they play only once). This is great for techno and can work for drums in all kinds of dance music.

You could DJ between different grooves set up in Maschine by holding PATTERN and switching between them. This is pretty low risk, as it switches between them in legato (in phase, in time, etc).

There's always the option to work mutes and solos. This can be important if you're for example playing Maschine over something that does not have hi-hats, but know that hats are about to be introduced, or that the material in the next section will sound not-so-good with hats, so you mute them to avoid hats-on-hats or hats over vocals.

If you've sliced some of your favorite tracks, you could do a remix with the sequencer. This works well if you play the original, or part of it, and then drop the sequenced remix in Maschine.

Stuff not in the sequencer:

Stings, transitions, and risers. In Maschine, you have all sorts of control that you can't get in Traktor.

I use big hits, designed to be used with a MIDI keyboard, with tails controlled by the mod wheel, a lot. An example of one (very, very heavy) set of these is the "Damage Hits MW" instrument in Heavyocity's DAMAGE.

You could also have a noise-based synth that could be mixed in and out (and the patch of which can otherwise also be fully controlled) with the end of one track and the beginning of the next, or a groove in Maschine. This is great for moving between tempos.

The same goes for risers. You could have it automatically react to the music being played, and/or control it up on the encoders.

Pad drumming is another whole world, but gives one the immediacy of playing an instrument. I have tons of tuition on this coming out over the next few months. It's worth noting that if you're drumming, you don't necessarily need to bother with the sync stuff with which you had trouble.

Okay, @Botstein - Got it all working now, synced it all up fine, thanks for your help dude.
Now, all I need to do now is leanrn how to apply this over tunes that I'm playing in Traktor, are you the man for this too? Could you assist? Cheers dude.

Hm.. I've just started getting in Ableton so I'm going play with it and see how I go, but maybe just using Maschine could be a way to go, so is it simple to route it all? I've managed to get it all working now, all I need to do is sync up Traktor and Maschine so that my Maschine step sequence is locked to my traktor decks music.

After that, my main thing is to be able to apply FX plugins over my tracks in traktor.

Unless you need to deal with tonnes of raw audio, which you most likely don't, you dont really need to bother with Ableton at all. People tend to get caught up with "using Maschine as a plugin" when they really can shrug off Ableton entirely. Just run your VSTs through Maschine, and route it though Maschine's 8 billion potential output busses.

EDIT: Okay, I foud out that i just had to press the 'play' button actually inside of Ableton, and now step sequence works. Only one problem - Maschine is not in time with my Traktor tracks, previously i had synced maschine and traktor up so that its all in time, now how do i re do this, with maschine as a plugin in Ableton... Help please!

Thanks/.
