Simple? 2 CDJ400s Running HID in Traktor Pro. How?
Posted on: 21.11.2010 by Alexandra Nerby
I have been all over the internet, from Pioneer, to NI, even some German websites but no one seems to grasp the concept fully of how to run them in HID. Many had to downgrade Traktor to 1.2.1 to even run them in MIDI.

I am upgrading from a controller to the CDJs as well as a DJM400 and would like to use Traktor with them in HID mode NOT MIDI for higher resolution.

It is a pretty basic Set-Up and I know it can be done, but am not seeing one thing leading to it. On Serato, yes, on Traktor Pro, no. I know Traktor 1.2.7 now allows HID support though.

Can someone please first tell me if it's possible, and then, if you could, guide me through the steps to make it happen?

Thank you and to all those who helped me earlier!

It would have been quite an old version to be honest. It was probably an early version of v2. Not even v2.5 I'm guessing. If anything the integration should have improved since then.

And yup, the encoder did scroll through the tracks in the browser list I believe I mapped one of the FX buttons to "Show/Hide Browser" and some other things like that. If something's not there in the default mapping it's quite easy to add it in via the controller editor once you get the hang of it.

You might want to check out some Youtube videos for "CDJ400 HID Traktor" just to be sure everything you're looking for is covered.

However, I did use the 400's with Traktor for a long time and found they worked really well. They have HID integration with Traktor so they have excellent two way communication.

The jog wheels were tight (I'm not a big scratcher, but I never noticed any issues in this respect) and the pitch faders were absolutely fine (you can tune the % in Traktor as well I believe). If I recall all info you would expect was presented back to the CDJ400's screen - e.g. track name, time remaining, bpm, pitch % etc.

Looping was also mapped but I couldn't honestly tell you much more than that as I never really used those features.

Things like that are very easy to map in Traktors Controller Editor though. The stuff which is normally a pain to map via MIDI is things like the jog wheels etc, which you would not have any problems with when running the CDJ400's in HID mode.

Your onboard CDJ400 effects probably won't work when using Traktor (mine didn't anyway), but it does mean you can then map those buttons to other functions like Flux Mode On/Off etc.

Good luck and have fun!

Does the 'Pioneer ASIO' act as some kind of aggregator interface for the 2 CDJ Soundcards, basically presenting Traktor with 1 soundcard but with 4 outputs (Left/Right for CDJ 1 and Left/Right for CDJ2)?

Reason for asking is when I go to assign the CDJ's in 'Output Routing', I see the following options:

1. CDJ-400 1
2. CDJ-400 1
3. CDJ-400 2
4. CDJ-400 2

I'm guessing the first CDJ-400 1 = Deck 1 Left and the second CDJ-400 1 = Deck 1 Right. Then the same for the 2 x CDJ-400 2 devices.

If so then this is awesome because it's proper stereo output. Previously, where I could only select one CDJ-400 ASIO for the Audio Device, I had to send the Left to Deck 1 and the right to Deck 2. This meant I could use two decks, but only in horrible mono.

If you could confirm if I've understood properly that would be much appreciated and thanks so much for your simple set up guide!

On a Windows 7 machine. You don't need ASIO4ALL at all if you only need 2 deck.

What I've done.
  1. Download & install the latest CDJ Firmware (v1.33)
  2. Download & Install the latest Driver for Windows 7 (V1.02)
  3. Install Traktor
  4. Select Pioneer ASIO as soundcard
  5. Select external mixing
  6. Assign CDJ 400 1 for Deck A in output routing
  7. Assign CDJ 400 2 for Deck B in output routing
  8. Switch the CDJ in USB mode, select the right Deck for each player
  9. Load a track, play, Enjoy

No tweaks, worked the first time with factory buffer/latency setting, no click, no pops... it just worked.

I'm just reporting back because half of the people don't after they've figured out what they're looking for. Just in case someone else is looking to hook up the 400's using hid in traktor. I am running traktor version 2.6.3 and my cdj's firmware is the latest 1.33. If your not using the cdjs as sound cards and using a traktor certified mixer, then these things are truly plug and play. I didn't have to install any mappings or drivers (using Mac). Simply plugged them in booted up traktor turned them on and turned the encoder to chose what deck I wanted to control. As easy as that

Does Traktor crash if you change the CDJ from HID mode to CD/USB mode? What if you simply take the device off of Traktor's output? Wondering about if you were to roll up with just your laptop to a club and use CDJs in HID and be able to transition DJs smoothly?

Hi, i have a similar problem, ive gone through most of those step and all instalation steps that are on this page. but when i come to choose the cdj in output routing, its says not conected. as in it cant find a the cdjs.
If i go down to ASIO4all bottom right of the screen i can see cdj 400 but cant go into it to select it. this is when my cdjs are plugged in.

also had a little go on virtual dj but a problem there if anyone knows, not that i use it now i have traktor. but on there it recognises it all perfectly and works if i load a track on one side were ok, but if i then load another it replaces the other aswell, so both decks with the new track.

any help with this would be great, posted on this because i have a similar problem to you. i run windows 7 on pc. and traktor 2. cheers

If you essential to accomplish your own HID map, you can build these are if you'd equal to sign from scratch you can click on the Add add faction low Manoeuvre, go to Pioneer and sound on CDJ400. This leave lawless up a clean HID map which you can construct yourself.

Eksternal output? Remember that i didn't use any audio interface. My sound didn't want to come out if i choose asio4all v2.
What should i do to make HID mode or midi showen up?

I did the aggregate soundcard thing on mine.

Opened audio midi setup with both cdjs plugged in made an aggregate device, then made sure the outputs were correct.

Then went into traktor and set it up from the controllers and and then selected my external outputs.

The problem with the cdj isn't that it doesn't read midi, or hid, but that it sees both cdjs as one device therefore runs it as one channel on an external mixer.

All the steps are correct. I didn't do it that way because I like to do it all manually. I did import the generic CDJ400 tsi and then made a custom mapping out of that.

That video is also for a MAC so you wouldn't use ASIO4ALL, you'd be using CoreAudio.

From your signature, it looks like you have the Audio2 DJ so you could keep running sound like you normally would from that. And if you have the latest version of Traktor, all you'd have to do would be to plug in your CDJ-400s into your computer and set them to USB Then your computer should recognize them, at which point you select which deck you want your CDJ's to control, on the CDJs themselves with the rotary encoder/push knob.
Alexandra Nerby
24.11.2010
Dynamics, you imported a TSI file though didn't you?

I was told by Pioneer to:
1. set-up ASIO4ALL for both CDJs
2. Open traktor
3. Run set-up wizard and select CDJ as my controller
4. push PC mode on CDJs to select the decks.

And that's it, no importing anything...

I know for sure that they work because this is the setup that I use. Plugging them straight into your computer (even after you've already opened Traktor) will set them up for HID automatically.

And yes, the soundcards CAN be aggregated on both MAC (core audio) and PC (ASIO4ALL)
I've tried and use them both ways (depending on the computer I'm using).

No need to use ASIO4ALL if you're going to use your Audio 2 for the soundcard.
Clelia Braccini

In order to make an aggregate device on the PC, you need to have the CDJs plugged in (after you've installed their drivers) then go to Audio Setup in Traktor and in the Audio Device menu, choose ASIO4ALL. This should open up the device manager where you need to choose both CDJs.

Then go to Output Routing and click on External for the Mixing Mode. Assign your CDJs accordingly.

Then for the maps, usually once you have your CDJs plugged in, Traktor should recognize them, at which point you choose which deck they need to focus on, on the CDJs themselves.

Under Controller Manager in Traktor Preferences, you should see 2 Pioneer.CDJ maps. These are HID maps that pop up standard once you plug in a CDJ and are assigned to their respective CDJs by the In-Port.

If you want to make your own HID map, you can customize these are if you'd like to start from scratch you can click on the Add button right under Device, go to Pioneer and click on CDJ400. This will open up a blank HID map which you can customize yourself.

A way to know if you're using HID and not MIDI is that all of the track info of the song you're playing shows up in the CDJ's screen.

As for the sound, just plug in your CDJs to your mixer with RCA connectors and you should be good to go.
Alexandra Nerby
23.11.2010
Thank you I have seen those, but it doesn't explain the set-up process. The first one says MIDI in the descriptions anyway.

And if on a PC? Use ASIO4ALL?

I understand NOT to import a tsi. file, as this would then be MIDI. Do I use the set-up wizard inside Traktor then?
Virgie Igler
23.11.2010
If you're on a Mac you'll have to create an aggregate soundcard device that combines both soundcards of the two CDJ 400s.
