Quick question about timecode and TP2/S4
Posted on: 06.06.2011 by Mozella Vay
I was wondering, is the software different between Traktor Pro 2 and Traktor Scratch Pro 2?

As in, if someone has an S4, and already had timecode vinyl etc, and also an Audio 8 (Traktor Scratch Pro), do they have to upgrade the Audio 8 Scratch software to Traktor Scratch Pro 2, or does the Traktor Pro 2 software with the S4 do all the same features.

I probably am not explaining it well, but I am trying to figure out for my friend whether he needs to get the timecode upgrade for his S4 to use my Audio 8 and timecode. He believes that no upgrade is necessary as he will be able to use the Traktor Pro 2 that came with his S4 with the Audio 8 and timecode.

I'm just not sure on that, and was wondering if anyone could confirm. My impression was that to use timecode, you needed to upgrade the software to Scratch software, as well as have the timecode and audio card that supports it.

It's best to double check with NI's Registration Support, as the common case these days is to have the TSD/TSP registered to you at the time when registering the S4 software for the first time. When they send you the upgrade to T2, they check their DB and if there's also a SCRATCH on your account, they just send you a TSP2, not TP2. Now in his case, he already got the TP2 license, so the TSP2 has to be an additional one. I still trust they will upgrade him, though.

This would be interesting to know how it will evolve. Please share with us

Ok thanks for the detailed replies. I thought that was how it worked; in that the "Scratch" software is required to enable the use of Timecode.

I will let my friend know. Thanks.

To use timecode you need either Traktor scratch duo, Traktor scratch Pro, Traktor scratch duo2, or Traktor Scratch Pro2.
You got Traktor scratch pro and that would work fine for him for timecode, but if he plans on using timecode with Traktor 2 he needs to upgrade one of the licenses to Traktor scratch pro2. Traktor pro 2 has all the options of traktor scratch pro2 but no timecode support (hence the reason why one of them has "Scratch" on the title and the other doesn't).

If he wants to run traktor 2 with timecode it doesnt make sense for him to get ur copy of traktor scratch pro. He just needs to upgrade his version of traktor pro2 to traktor scratch pro2 and he's all set (s4 runs on scratch pro 2 as well).

Ok, I follow all of that, but it still is not clear to me if the software itself is different.

What this guy is essentially wanting to do is buy my Audio 8 with Traktor Scratch Pro (original) and have both an S4 and an Audio 8 with the timecodes. I realize that the S4 would be sufficient for the soundcard, but in most cases he will dj out with the Audio 8 and timecode.

What he is planning to do is buy this system from me, but since he already has Traktor Pro 2 from the S4, he does not believe he will have to upgrade either of them to Traktor Scratch Pro 2, as he believes that all he needs is the physical timecodes to make it work.

I am under the impression that the software is different between Traktor Pro and Traktor Scratch Pro, and he will require a least one copy of Traktor Scratch Pro to work with the Timecodes. Or did they change that with version 2 of the software and all version 2 Traktor Pro software is essentially exactly the same?

he'll need to upgrade the license to TSP2 if he want's to use timecode with his S4.

the Audio8 is not needed, though, as the S4 is a certified SCRATCH interface. Only the software license matters. That means that if you plug the S4 into your computer (assuming you have TSP2 on it), and connect TTs or CDJs you'll be able to use timecode without the Audio8 at all.

also, if a user has a TSP or TSD license registered to the same NI account, as the one which is used to activate the S4 software, than NI would send him a free upgrade to TSP2, not just TP2.

Yes he needs to get the update to be able to use the timecode.
