Laptop output into S4 (C or D) output, aint working no more... Posted on: 22.03.2011 by Jovita Ockert Macbook Pro + S4The other day I had a gig. I setup the unit at home with the rental PA's to ensure that everything is working. I tested to ensure that iTunes can run through my D channel (for when dinner time comes) and to my surprise without even doing anything fancy, it did. I plugged in a 2.5 to RCA (into S4) and it just worked - all good until I rebooted. So I get to the gig and after setting up and trying to access my iTunes through the same setup at home, it didn't work. I tried different RCA's, messing with settings and everything else I could believe of but the headphone to RCA, simply didn't want to work. The only way that I got it to work was changing my sound output preferences in my OSX to S4 which simply used the USB. Now, at home, before I left I was using the headphone jack (output of macbook) to RCA input on the S4 - the only thing I did was reboot which I hadn't done in about a week. So is there any way of having the audio feed into my S4 through input C and D again? Did I do something wrong? Am I missing something? The main reason I need this is so that I can have my banquet hall dinners in peace, play the dinner playlist off of iTubes and then when I am ready to get the ball rolling, be able to press play on the S4 and fade out itunes via deck C or D. Cheers! | |

The only way to feed audio thru is to set the s4 as my sound output within the midi settings on my MBP. The problem then is that I have to manually lower the audio on my itunes and then start the music on one of the other channels. I imagine that it might be a setting within my S4. Can one of you guys have a peek at your settings and let me know if I need to change anything? And by the way I tried setting all my decks one by one to live and nothing HELP! |
Leeanna Ayla 26.06.2011 | With the switch set to thru on the back and the computer turned off I get audio through channel D. Make sure your gain is turned up on the back and that you're using the main volume knob. |
Kesha Orde 26.06.2011 | I use this setup every week as I run an ipod into D set to Thru, which I have as a backup incase of a crash. The chain goes: ipod - 3.5mm to RCA lead - Input D RCA. Input D is set to THRU and LINE and the gain up quite high. I have noticed that if deck D in the software is set to live input then this wont work. |
Jovita Ockert 25.06.2011 | It's been a while but I'm still stuck with this problem, can someone please help! |

Traktor is set with the Aggregated device, the 2Ch Soundflower is set as either default sound output device or just as output in the application I want to AUX in Traktor. I'm currently using this with Garage Band this way. I can't say that I have 100% good results yet, due to latency issues. If the soundflower is set to 256 or 512 buffers, all is great but that's a big delay. 64buffers is perfect in terms of delay, but I experience pops & crackles. Need to play & test more with it ... If you just want to play iTunes or other player, that'd be a perfect way to avoid these external cable connections. It is definitely better sonically. |
Francina Decosse 27.03.2011 | any luck ? |
Francina Decosse 25.03.2011 | sorry mate, it was a hell of a week ... anyway, it's in the past now Just did the tests and all works fine as expected. Still have an idea of what maybe wrong: open "Applications -> Utilities -> Audio MIDI Setup" app and double check if the default sound output is set to the "Built-in Output". That can be done using right click on the device (equivalent). If your output is set correctly, you should be able to hear sound through the S4. The most basic test for you is to unplug the jack from the MBP and start hearing through the built in speakers. If you hear it, once you plug the jack it will start sounding through the S4 (on either channel D, AUX or the THRU mode, as set). Also note that the level of the built-in output is low let me know how it goes Cheers! |

Nick Ross 23.03.2011 | uhhh...what is your macbook pro set to use as a soundcard? |
Francina Decosse 23.03.2011 | Still at work, but will do it toevening . It shouldn't take too long. I will also describe the instructions for all 3 variants: 1) HW through; 2) AUX in; 3) "live input" |

Columbus Fabbo 23.03.2011 | I've never personally used the thru capability, but I believe if you go into Preferences > Decks and set either Deck C or D to "Live Input" and plug the RCA's into the corresponding input, you should be golden. I'm not at my S4 or I'd test to verify. If this does work, I might also suggest making a new layout preset with the Live Input deck so you can switch between them on the fly. Hope this helps. |
