MacBook Pro for S4

MacBook Pro for S4
Posted on: 27.06.2011 by Albertina Blau
Hi guys I am going to buy traktor s4 and macbook pro. I was believeing about buying this MacBook Pro 15" Quad-Core i7 2.0GHz , but I heard that there are some issues with quad core processors and s4/traktor pro 2. Is this true and is this mbp good enough to run traktor pro 2 and s4 with all 4 decks and effects without any problems?

Thanks in advance!

I'd wait to see what the new airs have to offer shortly. I've got a 15' I7, and yeah its a cracking laptop but add it up.

An I7 will cost

For the most part I know it doesn't cause problems, but it does strike me that being able to use multiple cores would be a very easy way of reducing some people's CPU troubles without having to upgrade their machine.

It does seem surprising that Traktor cannot utilise multiple cores (it only ever uses 1), but apparently that's something they're working on.

(I believe) That's their solution to glitches and dropouts when there was a lot of midi traffic going on with PCs (VU meters, send monitor state, etc), read it somewhere in this community .

I have one and till now I've not had any issue with TP2 my S4 and my MBP. Actually I believe this is the best lappy I've ever had, and it runs everything flawlessly. You can't go wrong with this MBP. Its the best investment I've ever made tech wise.

Yeah I noticed that, most of the time my 3rd and 4th core stay idle. Maybe if I run some intensive programs or graphics it will, but for Traktor it does'nt.

I've never experienced any heating issues. Yeah of course if you use your MBP for 5 hrs straight of Dj'ing it gets a little hot, like all computers do, but nothing to cause an alarm or stress about.

As far as I'm aware all these issues with the 2011 MBp have been fixed and now they run perfectly. I must add though that not once did I personally have any issues with mine since I've bought it. I guess I must be one of the lucky few hey. I also just updates to OSX 10.6.8, not that I can see any difference.

I'm also hesitating a lot between a MBP and one of the upcoming Sandy Bridge Airs.

My hesitation is on the following specs :
- Screen-size / resolution and GPU performance
- CPU performance on the near term with Traktor Pro 3, 4...
- If there's still no 512GB SSD model.

I lost hope that Apple releases the god's laptop, a MacBook Air 15 inch with a good CPU, a true GPU and at least 512GB of SSD storage

I currently have a MacBook Black 2.2Ghz of I believe late 2007... and it's usable until I try connecting my Technics 1200S on my S4 for vynil control...

BTW, if it's true, it's a shame that Traktor requires dual core CPUs to work then not even uses the second core ! They should split Decks A+C handling on core 1 and Decks B+D on core 2 or one core handling each Deck on Quad-core CPUS.

In response to the airs, I run 2.0.2 on my 3 year old first gen ssd air without problems until it gets hot. If I am in a hot environment DJing for a while, the waveforms start to run a little jerky and I am forced to lay off effects and keylock til it cools back down. I am also wondering if the new airs will be fine or if I should get a pro. I really like the air much more. One thing to note is mine has lighted keys and the current ones dont. This is a feature I would really miss.

I purchased the S4 recently and at the same time got the 15" MBP 2.3 GHZ. The setup has been rock solid with not one problem. Just run all the updates before you get going. The 2.0GHZ will run just as well.

send monitor state tells Traktor to update EVERY led on the controller, Windows doesn't give a lot of priority to audio processing (before tweaking) so when a bottleneck happened >>> audio dropout.

Back on topic: you should do well with that lappy, I'm running it flawless with minimal latency with a C2D @ 2.26.

Just a tad over my head hehe. I kinda know what sensd monitor state is, but don't know why there was a problem with PCs.

Well, they split the midi and audio processes, so I guess it's a step forward in that direction.

Just to clarify this was an Apple issue not an NI issue. It sounds like Apple fixed the issue promptly though.

Spot on,

if your worried though, pop into an Apple store or Authorised Service Provider and get them to run the "CoolSystem" diagnostic tool on it for peace of mind
