My first mix (Dubstep) - really would love feedback. Posted on: 03.09.2010 by Sherwood Chugg Hey everyone,I'm after doing my first ever mix and I put it up on soundcloud to see what people believe. Its not perfect but really would like to get feedback from as many people as possible. Technically theres nothing too crazy but it was mostly improv. http://soundcloud.com/kieran-craddock/dubstep-mix Any comments would be so appreciated, good and bad! Thank you all so much. | |

Sherwood Chugg 10.09.2010 | Anyone else able to give some feedback? Looking to make a 2nd mix soon so any feedback at all would help with that! |
Georgine Thanos 06.09.2010 | Cool stuff man. I like the opening with the horns, and I like that you don't open too aggressively. It's good to give yourself some space to go. Anyway, transitions and stuff... ~3:30: Well phrased, no beat or key clashing, nicely done. ~5:30: Well phrased, no clashing, good job. ~7:30: Same, nicely done. Calm Down is a huge track, eh? ~9:40: Ooh nice! I take it this was you with effects and not the track, right? Cool stuff. I'd time it so the build of Calm Down better coincides with the build for the next track, though...so drop that "pulling out..." sample right when you start the effects on Calm Down. As it stands, you lose a little energy, but if you just drop the next track a bit earlier you'll have the dance floor going bonkers. ~13:00: Good stuff, no clashing or anything and nicely phrased. ~16:00: Again good, no problems. I'm getting tired of the dark brostep/Excision-Datsik style dubstep at this point, though. ~18:00: Again, good, but the style of dubstep has become tiresome for me. Switch it up! At this point if you were, for instance, playing a dubstep side room at an otherwise electro/house event, I would have probably left your room for one of the other rooms. (I've experienced this phenomenon with dubstep DJs playing way too much brostep a couple times this summer, and that's exactly what I've done, even though I produce dubstep myself and am obviously a big fan of the genre.) ~21:50: Glad you brought this tune in; it's a nice change of pace (and a great tune anyway, albeit pretty played out). ~ 24:30: Caught me off guard, and not in a good way. That kind of killed the energy. By all means be creative, but this didn't work. ~I believe Sick Toevening is a bit too played out for you to let the whole track go, but that's just my opinion, and maybe a crowd would respond differently. Depends on the crowd I guess. Anyway, nice mix, overall impressions: Your mixing is really solid. No key clashes, beat clashes, or anything like that. Now focus on getting more and more creative with your mixing and really working the energy...use transitions as an opportunity to create MORE energy, rather than just sustain the current energy. You already do this, but we can all improve of course. And as I said before, I believe you should vary your selection more. Playing only brostep is like playing only Dutch House...you can get away with it if you're Datsik or Afrojack, but even they don't do that when they play out, at least when I've seen big names like that. (And I've seen Excision & Datsik, Afrojack, Caspa, Rusko, 12th Planet, all those guys.) I'd definitely recommend for you to go see big names like that and listen to how they program their track selection. |
Sherwood Chugg 05.09.2010 | Thanks a million, that would be amazing! It's so true because without feedback you can't learn from other peoples opions, which can only help you become a better DJ. The only problem is trying to get that feedback so thank you so much. |
Georgine Thanos 05.09.2010 | I'll give it a listen tomorrow man and give you detailed feedback if you want. Remind me (you can message me on my soundcloud, I'm soundcloud.com/ballsofsteel) if I don't get to it. I know that getting feedback as a new DJ was always very helpful to me so I'm happy to pay it forward. |
