Remixing tracks quickly Posted on: 13.02.2011 by Olene Minyard Just been looking at videos on YouTube now.Came across a few 2 Many DJ's interview videos where they said they made the Dizzee Rascal "Bonkers" remix after hearing it for the first time about 30 mintues before they were due to play. They made a version quickly and played it at that show then. There was another one where they claim to have made a Daft Punk remix with Erol Alkan in a hotel room 10 minutes before they were due to play live where they then included it in the set. Question 1: Would it even be possible to genuinely make a remix that quickly? Question 2: If so, how? Just wondering as some of their remixes are mind-blowing, like MGMT's Kids etc. Only asking as at the moment I only mix/create using other peoples tunes and don't "remix" tunes as such. I add custom loops or beats created in Ableton to beef up some tunes, but I wouldn't call that a remix. | |

Ling Zambada 14.02.2011 | Yea, complete beginner to both Ableton and production in general. To be honest, if you have Operator, there aren't too many other synth VSTs you need. Massive is the one VST you absolutely need. Other than that, drum sample pack are always a plus, but you can get by without them if you're willing to spend time making the sounds yourself. As for quickness, make sure you save all your devices as presets. For example I've got preset EQ8s for each different track I use (vocals, kick drum, snare, hats, crash, sub bass, etc.), then I just tweak them as necessary to the song I'm working on. |
Olene Minyard 14.02.2011 | Good to hear you got up to speed within 6 months. Were you an Abletow/DAW beginner too or come from another platform? Any tips on essential Ableton tools/add-ons for creating remixes quickly? |
Ling Zambada 14.02.2011 | Definitely possible. I'm not at the same level as them, but I've only been producing music for like 6 months and can punch out a remix in a day. Just gotta have a good idea of what you wanna do with it. |
Brunilda Kora 15.02.2011 | The answer to your question is Ableton Live. Once you've warped the track, everything else is easy. |
13.02.2011 | 2 many djs have been around for a while; they just know their shit but doing a quick edit is possible with little time if you're good at using your DAW. for my last liveset, I figured it would be cool to work the "gold dust" vocal into it. didn't take longer than 20 minutes, while I was waiting for the cab to pick me up... |
Lisa Lochotzki 13.02.2011 | Practices makes perfect I guess, the more you do, the faster you can be. Good musical knowledge (e.g. you can create what's in your head in snap), know your instruments/vst and how to create sound, know your software. I guess that's the only thing you need... and practice, then practice and practice again. |
