Another drum & bass mix, why not? Posted on: 07.04.2011 by Annalisa Shogren Hey all, thought I'd upload an average dnb mix for everyone to indulge in. Let me know what you believe, not so sure myself...http://soundcloud.com/rossmeyer/drum...mix-march-2011 Thanks! | |

Corrin Penney 09.04.2011 | The only time I believe you should throw mixing in key out of the window is when you know your songs. When you have that eurika moment and your sure song X would be the sickest mix from song Y. When you know your tunes chances are youve been playing long enough to refine your skillset. After this point you can take or leave mixing in key. But you always need to feel out the incoming song to make sure it fits nicely against the current one. You will always be mixing keys even if you dont mix in key, thats music! The nice thing about recording mix tapes is you can spend as long as you like refining it. How long did it take you to piece together this mix? |
Joie Cantillon 08.04.2011 | Just a bit of advice from someone who has no business giving it as I am still pretty new myself, but here it goes. 1) The easy mix with DnB is to "swap" Basslines like flash said, though I try to not lower the mids always...it can kill the outgoing track at times... 2) Also I am trying to experiment with the lowpass fader when switching my basslines, it's not perfect yet, but it does work (though I forget to turn it off when I play my next track pretty often and screw the whole thing up like I said, I'm new) 3) also like flash said, mixing harmonically (or in key) is really a good idea...try to keep things a perfect 5th (or +1 on the camelot scale) apart. For me it allows longer mixes and they sound a bit better. I know a lot of djs say they don't do it because it's entirely limiting, but it seems to make my mixes sound a bunch better. I like to believe that it allows mixes rather than transitions if that makes any sense 4) take it easy and don't be hard on yourself. I've made way worse mixes by the way check out my mix "Deeper Liquid Vibes" in my soundcloud (it's in my sig) and please let me know what you believe. I've been wanting to do a little back to back liquid set. Maybe you want to try it out? Lemme know |

Best i could say would be to possibly take the bass out of you first song and replace it with the bass of the next, then just switch em around... However, Im more into my House mixs and trance so maybe my advise isnt good. Keep it up though, you know what gets a crowd moving, i was dancing away like LOL |
Annalisa Shogren 08.04.2011 | What bits did you despise the most? Haha. |
Lula Falconburg 08.04.2011 | It's always best to assume that I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about, until verified by another member. |
Lucrecia Diloreto 08.04.2011 | I understand you asked people to let you know what they believe, and thats great and all, a bit of criticism isnt bad, but don't let people really influence the way you mix. Like the mixing in key stuff, i throw that stuff out the window, you can make almost any track work with another somehow, you just have to be a bit creative. Now, by no means am i saying that this mix was great lol, because what was pointed out earlier is true, im just trying to say that the tracks can work, just find better ways of mixing them. I hope im not contradicting myself in any way lol. Anyways, I still listened to the mix because i love dnb, esp liquid. kinda a bit sick and tired of all the house/electro mixes going around.... |

Corrin Penney 09.04.2011 | Key matching, dude. Grab a copy of mixed in key or rapid evolution and key up your library. Also, listen out for when things don't sound right together. the mids in a lot of your mixes were very busy, too busy infact. also, kill the bass of the incoming tune. The mix with jungle music springs to mind. My standard, go to mix is kill bass on incoming, lower mids on the current and blend in the mids of the new song. Switch bass when ready. |
