Track Selection
Track Selection Posted on: 19.12.2011 by Jeri Shufflebarger I have been experimenting with DJ'ing since Dec of 2010. I have a really successful mix on SoundCloud.com/djquant. I am working on a new mix, and as always, I have a difficult time really finding the perfect tracks to mix. I have search for threads regarding this topic (along with the web) and really haven't found the answers I am looking for. If some people could check me out on soundcloud and give my mixes a listen and provide some feedback on them to tell me how I am doing in general. I would appreciate it. Aside from that if some people can chime in on how they select their tracks and how I can do a better job on finding tracks for my mixes I would greatly appreciate it! This is one area I really struggle in and advice is much needed! Thanks! | |

How is anyone going to find out about you if you dont post in groups, and drop boxes? I dont care how good a DJ you are. If you dont promote yourself you will never get heard. Period. |

Laquita Shorty 21.12.2011 | Hmmm, What I do is search through everything (within reason) even in genres I don't usually look at, and grab a bit of everything, then some how blend it into one seemless mix, ur mix on soundcloud seems quite generic for electro (not that its a bad thing, I wish i could get 600 plays) . . . However when I put tunes together I believe about how they blend to create a new sound as opposed to sounding like two tunes running together in sync, I try to merge them so it sounds like a new phrase of the tune. Hope that makes sense. |
Nella Libin 21.12.2011 | Back when we all started to first try our hand at this game, we were all , yeah lets be honest here shall we, that clueless twat. I had a bit of an advantage over a lot of folk because back then i was hanging out with some serious talent, bombarded with sensational music in warehouses beaches quarries and fields at evening , then back to the dj's houses when that was over to carry on the party, crate digging there in to tunes id never ever be exposed to otherwise. And yes, when i first started besides the god awful trainwrecks there was the unbelievably shite tune selection that were never ever gonna make a coherent set. Your ear develops over time, unless you're incredibly gifted or nicking set lists from other dj's to spin yourself. There is no way to bypass this fact, not even the high and mighty camelot wheel a lot of you swear by. If your bored at any point, flick through my stuff on mixcloud at some point, ill promise you one thing, according To the Camelot system, most of my stuff shouldnt be in the same room together, let alone work. Train and trust your ears. |

Jeri Shufflebarger 20.12.2011 | The whole purpose of this thread was to get advice on picking your tracks. I.e. I knew that already and he wasn't actually giving any real advice. He was just reiterating what I was originally saying. So, no there isn't any real value in his/her comment. Thanks. |

You'll eventually find something and get that 'yes' factor that you know it will work and that you can make it work. I don't want to sound like I'm sucking up just to get info... but. How did you go about to promote your 6k listener mix? I personally have a radio show where I produce and hour long mix every week from a different genre, but would like more listeners/interaction, do you have any suggestion for me and other people looking to promote their mixes in the same way? Thanks for your help, Let us know how your mix goes, I'll be looking out for it. Cheers, Dan M.C. |
Kasi Marget 20.12.2011 | When outside home and got no social obligations (like a conversation ), I just have my TMA-1's stuck on my ears and I listen to my collection in random mode. Sometimes the iPod choses an "old" track I didn't listen to for a while, and ideas of mixing just pop up in my head. iPhone > notes > I write it down asap. Then, when i get home, let's check if that was a good idea or not. When you are making choices because you are forced to (i.e. you WANT to do a tracklist right now) it ends up with bad picks, and this leads to a bad mix. This should be natural, you won't get any good result facing your iTunes library of 10000 tracks, browsing desperatly.
(i.e. Lazy Rich and Mord Fustang are pretty similar)
Don't compare 2 artists according to the "Better wipe that up" synth |

Nella Libin 19.12.2011 | innit, any twat can mix 2 tunes or more together, the REAL craft is in the tracklist selection and how you craft them in to a working set. |
Leeanna Ayla 19.12.2011 | 6000 plays, but only 43 comments and 87 followers seems a little odd. Regardless it's called digging and doing it well is what sets the real DJ's apart from the posers. It's not going to just fall into place in one week. What have you been doing the 8 months since you posted that first mix? |
Jeri Shufflebarger 19.12.2011 | Thanks for the help |

Gerard Cowin 19.12.2011 | Freestyle some mixes first, gather the songs you thought went well together and try to develop a theme or themes throughout the final mix with the group of songs you thought went well together and develop the mix around that. Think in terms of bass, rhythm and groove, build tension and try to tell a story through your sound. |

Jeri Shufflebarger 19.12.2011 | Yeah, I have been listening for over a week to find more tracks for my new mix, stbanas925. I have listened to a TON of tracks and I feel like my new mix is stuck. |
Jeri Shufflebarger 19.12.2011 | Thanks losxc451! |
Jenise Kryszak 19.12.2011 | What I do is listen to a tonnnnnnnnnn of music throughout the day (while driving, at the gym, free time, etc.) and eventually it all comes together. It's just a matter of knowing your music. After a while you recognize the style of the producer and can match it up with others that have the same style (i.e. Lazy Rich and Mord Fustang are pretty similar). Or if you hear a song with fat and dirty bass you might be able to match it up with a Dada Life song or something. I like to play EDM. Hip-hop is pretty simple to mix on the fly (for me). Other people have different methods though this is just what works for me so don't take my word for it... |
Jeri Shufflebarger 19.12.2011 | Haha. No man. I am stuck on my latest mix. I can't get past my first four tracks and I am struggling with finding other tunes to complete an hour set. While I may have 6k plays on my first mix, I haven't really gotten a lot of feedback on how well I am doing. So, I am concerned about how well I am doing and why I am am having such a hard time completing my new mix. This really is my main concern. But, you're right. I do have a pretty good response on my last mix. But, I can't seem to really get any actual feedback from actual DJ's. So, that makes me feel like I may not be doing something right. |
Kesha Pietrak 19.12.2011 | if you have 6000 plays on soundcloud Im assuming youre doing something right...just checked it out and I believe youre good |
Gerard Cowin 19.12.2011 | Seriously? You have 6000 plays and your asking us for "feedback" on your track selection. I may be wrong here, but it seems like your just "plugging" your mix to gain more listens. |
