Helping out my son
Helping out my son Posted on: 24.08.2012 by Lidia Haraway So my son is really getting into this entire DJing thing. He's been saving up his money and bought himself something called the iDJ3??? We'll I have been doing some searches and couldnt find anything as far as speakers go. He was able to do this on his own so the least I can do is support him and get his speakers. My thing is I dont want to drop to much money into it if he isnt going to stick at it. So does anyone have any recommendations? And please break it down into dummy terms for me, I have no idea about any of this. I'm just a dad trying to help out his 15 year old son. | |

Tons of mounting options so you can mount them on the wall at home or pole mount them for larger events. I wouldn't get anything else. Just check out their reviews. Edit: My bad, didn't read the whole thread. |

Lidia Haraway 28.08.2012 | Ok so after a long day of monitor shopping yesterday, my son went with the M-Audio MV 40s, they dont sound to bad. And now that he's on his way, I farewell to all of you and thank you. I'm handing the keys over to my son so he can learn from all of you. |

After talking with the wife, she believes its the best way to go until we're sure this is what he truly wants to do. As far as supporting him goes, I try to support both my kids in what they do. He's gone from playing drums to teaching himself how to play an electric guitar. He has enough drive to save for his first controller so it s only right we help where we can. My daughter at the age of 12 sings and has been accepted into quite a few performing art schools but we want to wait until she reaches high school to let her go. I want my kids to be kids as long as possible. After the monitors, The next buy will be a new laptop. Again thank you for everything you all have done to help out, I'll let you know what was decided on... |
Golden Faubert 26.08.2012 | top man!! more parents should try to support their kids in what they do as much as they can, no tell them to turn the noise down. good lad! |
Kazuko Eibel 26.08.2012 | I would second the Mackie Thumps http://www.zzounds.com/item--TAPTH15A . These will sound good for small parties and even better in that GS music room even if it never leaves the house could always be great for home family affairs. Kudos for supporting your son on his DJ path. I started 25 years ago on some used speakers that I simply rebuilt with the small budget I was working w these will definitely get the job done. |
Celine Surico 25.08.2012 | Samson sells good 2x150W PA systems, good stereo sound. That should work fine for smaller gigs, really small ones of course, with a sub-woofer a little bit bigger ones. They also have a 2x250W system. Best of all, light-weight. Cost below $500, maybe even lower if you get a good deal online. I got my 2x150W system to my garage as a practice PA system for $330. |
Christel Croak 26.08.2012 | Honestly, if he's looking to gig, I recommend renting for the first couple of gigs to see if he likes it or not. That's what I did, went to Long and McQuades, and I picked up speakers, cables, and lights for $80. Its a much safer bet than investing hundreds |
Alla Bluemke 26.08.2012 | can you be my daddy please? Thats awesome. Right now if hes just starting I would just get him some small monitors to play with at home. Maybe like rokit 5s or something. Reason being is that schools should have some of their own gear
to use for their events. As for house parties, kids usually figure out whos dad has the cool speaker system to borrow for a evening
, or they use the home theatre system and bang it out lol. Also when he is playing a house party you can rent out some speakers as well. I would hunt craiglist for some good deals on used gear . I got my speakers for 200 bucks (Pair of rokits) and will look for bigger speakers soon too. I've played small house parties with Rokit 8s no problem. |
Margie Pavell 25.08.2012 | Why not a decent set of bookshelfs from craigslist and a stereo reciever? I played on that set up for the better part of 20 years. no reason to spend hundreds of dollars on something he might not stick with... |
Stanley Topoleski 24.08.2012 | check out the cube street by roland the cube street costs around 300 bucks and is designed to be used out on the sidewalk great for house parties great for small gigs. i used one for a month in the park it was nice |
Lidia Haraway 24.08.2012 | Again thank you everyone, I'll look into all of these options and report back on the route I go for him. Sooner or later I'll turn this account over to him so he can meet everyone until then I'm getting a great education from everyone. |
Leeanna Ayla 24.08.2012 | If you do Thumps or something along those lines you'll also need speaker stands which can add $100+ each to the cost. You'll also need balanced TRS cables that will probably add close to $16--$80 total depending on length. Stands can wait for a little while, but not to long. |
Lorna Hagerty 24.08.2012 | It's post like these that make me love DJTT even more, My dad supports me because he's seen how much I've poured into music. I started on a Numark Mix track and to be honest I'm glad my parent's didn't go all out and get me something crazy because I believe it's important as a DJ to work up your way in gear as you work your way up in skill and commitment. I don't know too much about speakers but I hear great things about mackie thumps, but I seriously believe you could start on much less. maybe it would be a fun exercise to let him research some speakers on a budget? that way he gets to learn the product market and and additional info he'll pick up from looking into it. And I mainly want to thank you from A teenage Son to a father for the fact that you're supporting your kid in something you probably don't really under stand but can see that he wants to do it more than anything. |
Ossie Pooley 24.08.2012 | Monitors are all well and good, but if your son wants to DJ with them as opposed to create music, they're not as ideal. They simply won't go as loud as you want to. As a father, that might appeal to you and your neighbours though. =P I can recommend these as monitors: http://www.roland.co.uk/products/pro...6#.UDgvwtZlRKM And these are good for starting off: http://electromarket.co.uk/product/S...FeTHtAodVmoAIQ |
Yevette Matatall 24.08.2012 | Cool Dad.... Even if your boy gives up on the dj thing (which I can guarentee he wont) he will never grow tired of some awsome speakers. |

Noriko Lebowitz 24.08.2012 | Check these out. I personally use them. Great sound for the price! Plus you won't need an amp. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Alto-TS1...42-i2344769.gc |
Darren Teboe 24.08.2012 | Kudos on the support. Definitely look into either JBL or maybe QSC. If he loses interest in the near future, you want your investment to retain value rather than take a nose dive as soon as the box gets open. Some of the cheaper stuff does that. |
Rochel Gleese 24.08.2012 | Just going to chime in and say you're a super dad! |
Noelia Martig 24.08.2012 | I would check out the JBL EON series. Used you can pick up 15" Inch self powered speaker for 199$ each. That's for the G1 series G2 series will go for 299$ each. |

Khadijah Bucker 24.08.2012 | if you buy the right speakers they'll hold their value (mackies) |

Ossie Pooley 24.08.2012 | Sounds like you want large speakers as opposed to studio monitors. I can recommend Rolands. Cheap and worth the price. |
Khadijah Bucker 24.08.2012 | mackie thumps! |
Lidia Haraway 24.08.2012 | From talking with him regarding his long term goal he wants to be the DJ the schools want to use. And his friends come to for house parties. I'm looking at 300 per speaker as I've found usually come per. I want to be as supportive as possible but in the same hand don't want to drop my entire mortage payment on speakers if he's not planning on sticking with it. And thank you all for your help, I'm lost and dumb when it comes to this. |
Erich Vallabhaneni 24.08.2012 | great parent!! Glad to see that you're supporting him. These are some pretty good ones http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-a...o-monitor-pair good luck!! |
Antonetta Wikel 24.08.2012 | First off, Kudos to you for supporting your son in his artistic endeavor. Now, there's a WIDE variety of speakers and you need to limit your choices. If he's just planning on playing at home and small parties for friends then you want to look more towards studio and or nearfield monitors. If he wants something to play bigger events, you got to look at larger speakers. Also, you haven't mentioned your price range which would be very helpful in any suggestions we can give you. |
Stanley Topoleski 24.08.2012 | roland make some fairly cheap and decent speakers... they are the cakewalk speakers and cost 100 for the smaller ones and 200 for the larger ones. http://www.rolandus.com/products/pro...?ProductId=747 good if you are starting out, plus a big bonus seeing as its a good sound system for tv's and other things of that nature, if he doesn't stick with it you can use the speakers... oh and coolest parent evar !!!!! |
Khadijah Bucker 24.08.2012 | Check out the Alesis m1 520 speakers. Seem quite good for a budget |
